A Mississippi school district has apologized and a high school band director has been suspended after the band staged a halftime skit that depicted police being held at gunpoint.The controversial skit came as the Forest Hill High School band from Jackson performed Friday during a football game against Brookhaven High School to the south. It shocked many at the game in Brookhaven, where just six days earlier two police officers were killed in a shootout with a suspect."I was sad because of what happened last weekend, and it felt like they were making fun of it," Sarah McDonald, a Brookhaven High School student, told CNN affiliate WJTV. 650
A police official confirmed that 15 adults were shot outside a funeral home on the South Side of Chicago Tuesday evening.The incident took place around 7 p.m. ET. Chicago Police First Deputy Eric Carter said that there was an officer outside the funeral home at the time the incident took place. Carter said that the incident began when a person in a black car began shooting at funeral attendees who were standing along a street. Funeral attendees reportedly began shooting back at the car. A police report provided by the Chicago Police indicated that the vehicle then came to a rest and those in the vehicle fled.One person of interest is being questioned, Carter confirmed. WLS-TV in Chicago reports that 10 women and five men were injured in the shooting. Six of the victims were listed as being in serious condition at local hospitals, the other nine were in good condition.The age range of the victims spanned between 21 and 65. 943
A team at the University of Kentucky is researching a possible treatment for COVID-19 and key helpers are three alpacas; Big Boy, Blue Eyes and Emperor.“It’s a powerful technology that we have at UK (University of Kentucky) and it’s something that hopefully we can develop some therapeutics with,” said Wally Whiteheart, a professor in the Department of Molecular & Cellular Biochemistry.Alpacas, along with llamas and camels, make a special kind of antibody called a nanobody. Nanobodies can be useful in cancer research and for other diseases. Researchers, led by Whiteheart and fellow professor Lou Hersh, are working with a nearby ranch to see what impact alpacas could have on COVID-19.“We, in a sense vaccinate them, and this case with viral proteins, and we make nanobodies to those viral proteins,” explained Whiteheart. “We can then go and purify and identify the nanobodies that bind to the virus and then test them to see if they can inhibit viral infection.”Making the nanobodies is just the first step. The team will see which, if any, can block virus infection and those candidates could move on to clinical trials.There’s still a lot of research and testing to go, and also still a lot of hope.“The cool thing which we’re exploring now is the fact that you might be able to use them as a nasal spray and this actually gets them to the place where the virus is affecting lung tissue,” said Whiteheart.This isn’t the first time the trio of alpacas has helped medical research. Big Boy, Blue Eyes and Emperor have contributed to the university’s nanobody research for more than three years. A pre-teen's basketball shot from beyond the arc was good for more than just a few points in Springfield.Springfield police say a group of ten-to-twelve-year-old kids helped them catch a suspected burglar on the run. It all started after officers responded to a call for a burglary. Police say they received reports that a 50-year-old male had just broken into a garage and stole several items, including two weed trimmers before taking off on a bike. He dropped the lawn tools after encountering police and rode awat. According to a post from the Springfield Police Department, the first officer followed him in his patrol car until backup arrived and started chasing him on foot.That's where the young All-Stars come into play. Police say the kids were playing basketball nearby and one of them "threw a basketball across the roadway at the suspect, striking him, causing him to wreck his bicycle in the grass."Officers were then able to book the suspect into custody for burglary. 1033
