SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A local meal delivery nonprofit began sales Monday for its 15th annual Mama's Pies Thanksgiving Bake Sale, which raises funds to combat hunger among residents with illnesses like cancer and HIV. During the sale, which runs through Nov. 24, residents can order pumpkin, apple, pecan and Dutch apple pies to be delivered Nov. 27, the day before Thanksgiving. Nearly 20 local bakeries and caterers are expected to bake pies for the annual fundraiser and more pie bakers are needed, according to the organization. ``Our annual bake sale is a time-honored tradition that gives community members from around the region an opportunity to give back to our neighbors in need,'' said Mama's Kitchen Executive Director Alberto Cortes. ``Whether you're purchasing a pie, making a donation or volunteering for pie delivery, every hand up counts.'' Mama's Kitchen met its goal of 0,000 raised during last year's bake sale and aims to raise at least 0,000 during this year's six-week sale, which the organization says will fund the delivery of some 51,000 meals for residents with critical illnesses. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Friday for help in identifying the perpetrator of a felony battery that left a 24-year-old woman seriously injured last weekend in Carmel Valley.The victim was walking to her car with friends in a parking lot in the 12600 block of Torrey Bluff Drive about 9:45 p.m. Sunday when someone threw an unknown type of object at her, possibly from a inside dark-colored SUV, according to San Diego police.The projectile hit the woman in the eye, leaving her with major trauma, including permanent orbital-bone damage.Investigators, who have no description of the assailant, have been checking the area for surveillance footage of the seemingly unprovoked attack but have yet to find any, police said.Anyone who might be able to help detectives track down the perpetrator was asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477 or contact the agency online at sdcrimestoppers.org. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A local realtor who molested two underage girls apologized to his victims during a court hearing Friday, while those speaking on behalf of the victims said they could take solace in the fact that he will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.Donald Edward Hickey, 62, pleaded guilty last month to five felonies, including lewd and lascivious acts with a child and possession of child pornography for material investigators found on three separate devices.Hickey was initially set to be sentenced to a 25-years-to-life term on Friday, but the hearing was postponed until Sept. 6 so that an interview can be conducted for his probation report, which could affect his future in-custody housing considerations.Prosecutors did not disclose how Hickey knew the victims, but according to Deputy District Attorney Stephen Marquardt, the molestations occurred sometime between 2009 and 2012 in San Diego County. Hickey was arrested last year following a cyber tip sent to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.The former Clairemont resident, who worked as a real estate agent out of La Jolla, was found to have ``thousands'' of videos and images of child pornography in his possession, some of which depicted Hickey abusing children.``This defendant not only preyed on these children, but he also memorialized what he did so that he could retain a copy of the real-time abuse of those children,'' Marquardt said.Hickey's attorney, Danielle Iredale, said Hickey was molested by a local man in his neighborhood when Hickey was between the ages of 10 and 12.Hickey told those in attendance, ``I'm sorry for everything that's happened. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman died Monday after being injured Sunday when she was hit by a car in Rancho Penasquitos, police said.The San Diego County Medical Examiner says Nang Arm, 37, died after she was taken off life support Monday. Medics responded to a call at 7:07 a.m. Sunday on Black Mountain Road and Carmel Mountain Road, where they found an unconscious woman with face injuries, San Diego police Sgt. Robert Hawkins said.A gold-colored 2006 Nissan Sentra driven by 20-year-old Uvelyn Nunez- Jaramillo and carrying two passengers, was heading south on the 13700 block of Black Mountain Road when the car veered to the right, SDPD Sgt. Tim Underwood said.The car went onto a sidewalk, damaged a fence, then struck the Nang. She was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, Hawlins said.The car continued a short distance down the street, where it also hit a water line before it came to a stop. Nunez-Jaramillo exited the Nissan and walked away.Several passersby stopped at the scene to render aid to the woman and emergency personnel, Underwood said.Detectives determined that Nunez-Jaramillo caused the crash. She was contacted and returned to the scene, where police determined she allegedly was driving under the influence.She was arrested and booked in the Las Colinas Women's Detention Facility for felony driving under the influence and felony hit and run.Detectives also interviewed Nunez-Jaramillo's two passengers, who were released, Underwood said. 1468
