SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Hundreds of surfers are hitting the waves, in Mission Beach, to support young men around the County.It’s called the “100 Wave Challenge.” The event benefits the Boys to Men Mentoring Network. Surfers are determined to catch 100 waves by the end of the day.They can participate solo or with a team. SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) -- A debate is unfolding across the country, and right here in San Diego over how and when to reopen schools during this pandemic.With the new school year is quickly approaching, and the number of coronavirus cases continuing to surge locally, many teachers are left with concerns about opening their classrooms.The California Teachers Association (CTA), one of the largest teachers unions, urging state lawmakers to hold off reopening schools until it is proven to be safe enough."It is not reasonable for us to think that it’s safe for us to go back to schools," said E. Toby Boyd, the president of CTA who heard from teachers across the state. "We have to look at what is being mentioned in terms of the science, the facts, and how the disease is being spread."People are very afraid, very concerned because they either have underlying health conditions or someone in their household does," said Kisha Borden, the president of the San Diego Education Association (SDEA). "I'm hearing from educators of all ages who are very concerned about being put into an enclosed space, their classroom, with 25 to 30 children without the proper protocols in place."The San Diego Unified School District will start the 2020-2021 school year on Aug. 31 with an option of in-person or online distance learning.But, Borden said before teachers return, they have some demands."We're asking for at least a decline in cases over 14 days so that we're not bringing back large groups of people during a time when we're seeing an increase in cases," she said.The union would also like to see widespread, accessible, and frequent COVID-19 testing of students, staff, and parents when necessary, and fully-funded doctor recommended prevention measures.The district has listened to the union's concerns, and Borden said, after the latest meeting, she's feeling hopeful."I'm encouraged, the last statement that came from the district said that they'd like to meet with health professionals, they'd like to meet with public safety experts and really come up with clear medically proven guidelines and timelines around what is going to be necessary to bring students and staff back into our classrooms," she said.SDEA sent ABC 10News the following statement 2261

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. (KGTV)— With precipitation numbers up, participation numbers were down for outdoor events around San Diego County. But many who chose to endure the rain said it was worth the extra splash. It’s a rare sight in the heart of San Diego: kids sledding on a giant snowy hill at Montgomery Waller Park. For the Murillo family, it’s an annual tradition. “We go to see Santa Claus, we go to the little stores that they have there, and we come to sled down for a little bit,” mother Diane Murillo said. She and her children were bundled up while having fun at San Diego Snow Day. But this year, Murillo noticed that the crowds were much smaller. “It’s a lot smaller. It’s empty today. There’s actually parking,” Murillo laughed. She said the steady rain discouraged many folks from showing up. The City of San Diego even had to cancel Santa Claus’ helicopter fly-over of the park, due to inclement weather. Murillo also noticed that the snowy hill was very sludgy, and only about half its normal length. But by the looks of the children, the event was still worth it. Meanwhile, in the South Bay, there was a tent full of Christmas-themed games. From Candy Cane trees, ring tosses, to face paint, families enjoyed the free entertainment at the Chula Vista Children’s Faire. “It helps, because that way, we’re not getting wet while they are getting their stuff done and doing the activities. So it’s nice,” mother Felice Navarro said. Her neighbor invited her and her children to join them at the fair this year. The kids also had an option to splash around if they wanted, as they ran through an obstacle course as Chula Vista junior firefighters. Fun was not just reserved for children. Up at Liberty Station, hundreds of people waited in line to join the San Diego BBQ and Beer festival. 25-year-old Victoria Ransom was not going to let the rain dampen her birthday celebration. “We wanted to be able to double fist if that was a possibility. Hands-free rain protection,” Ransom joked. (KGTV) - Sharp Rees-Steely dermatologist Nancy Maly said they have seen an increase in people coming in with skin problems related to wearing masks.“Masks are very important but they do come with some drawbacks,” she said.She said the type of mask can impact how much it irritates the skin. A more loose mask will not irritate as badly but is not as effective for the fight against coronavirus, so she said to only wear a loose mask if there are no people nearby.“Obvious trade-off being they don’t function as well as masks so making sure that you’re choosing a face covering that’s appropriate for the situation,” she said.Maly also said wearing daily products like sunscreen, lotion and makeup on your face can make any acne or irritations worse. She said typical medications to treat acne should help these conditions, like salicylic acid and topical retinoids.She said bottom line, though, is that while keeping your skin healthy is important, the masks are necessary to keep others healthy.“I think overall people have been very aware of the overall goal of wearing a mask to protect themselves and protect other people. But some are beginning to head outdoors, just with many precautions. Just a few days into the Governor's Stay-at-home order, many San Diegans are already getting cabin fever."With our gyms closed, we got to get exercise somehow," Joann Carcioppolo said. With no access to their weights and machines, Carcioppolo and her friend Janice Meyers decided to take a stroll around Pacific Beach. Of course, keeping in mind, Rule #1. "Doing our social distancing!" Meyers laughed. Families also took to the outdoors, hiking and hitting the parks. Instead of having their children clued to their devices, the Marcussen's spent the day at Calavera Hills Community Park in Carlsbad. "They brought their own toys down to make sure that we stay healthy and clean."Now that kids do not have school, and parents are working from home, things can get mundane.
