SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Breakfast and brunch aficionados will soon have a whole new reason to flip over the most important meal of the day. "Flap Your Jacks" is bringing its own take on the traditional breakfast dish to North Park later this summer. The eatery will take over 3020 University Ave. with a bright, modern space featuring a custom art installation of "thousands" of spatulas hanging from the ceiling and a syrup-topped stack of "pancakes" on the building's facade.RELATED: 9 San Diego restaurants named most scenic in AmericaA menu packed with breakfast and brunch favorites will be offered from the kitchen, in addition to several freshly-squeezed juice options, "energy shots," and signature cocktails to jump start the day. But perhaps the most fun will be found in the breakfast joint's unique approach to pancakes, which guests can customize on their own. Each table will be outfitted with a personal griddle, inviting guests to put on their own chef hat and create their favorite pancakes from a variety of homemade batter flavors and toppings. The interactive concept aims to not only bring a new level of creativity to breakfast but also a unique conversation piece.RELATED: Puesto to move into Gordon Biersch's Mission Valley location this summer(Plus the chance to wow your friends with your pancake making skills.)But for those less confident in their flipping abilities, there are still several options, including pancakes, available from the kitchen. The two-level restaurant will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. once it opens. Currently, owners hope to debut Flap Your Jacks in late September or early October. 1642

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California roads have some of the worst drivers in the entire country, according to a new ranking.Finance website SmartAsset reports that California ties with Missouri to take third on the list for states with the worst drivers. In order to rank states, the site looked at the percentage of drivers with insurance, the number of DUIs per driver, the average number of deaths per miles driven and how often residents Google terms like traffic ticket or speeding ticket.California ranked 12th for DUIs per thousand drivers and 11th for percentage of uninsured drivers. The Golden State also ranked 32nd for number of people killed per 100 million miles driven. It may give some comfort to know that California wasn’t ranked first. That honor was given to Mississippi followed by Tennessee.More California rankings: 839

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Border officials say they have received enough funding to replace 100 miles of border fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border. The Trump Administration will put forth about .6 billion through the 2018 Congressional appropriations.  The new border wall provides a comprehensive system of wall, lighting, and technologies, Acting Commissioner Ronald Vitiello said during a press conference Friday. In San Diego, a total of 28 miles of border barrier will be replaced. Fourteen miles of "dilapidated" border wall constructed with landing mats will be replaced with new steel bollard wall, according to Vitiello. Another 14 miles of secondary barrier inside San Diego will also be replaced.RELATED: President Trump says San Diego 'desperately' wants a border wall while touring prototypesIn Calexico, officials are on schedule to build a new 30-foot high wall, replacing two miles of pedestrian barrier, Vitiello said."We appreciate this down payment for our needs," Vitiello told reporters but added the appropriations do not fully fund their needs in other critical locations. The wall system being installed will not utilize the prototypes President Donald Trump recently visited the San Diego area to inspect. Instead, the replacement walls will use design standards that have already been approved.RELATED: Trump suggests US military foot the bill for border wallBorder officials are in the process of developing new design standards from the eight prototypes built in Otay Mesa. It's not clear when those standards will be established."We've learned a lot from the prototyping process," Vitiello said. "Those attributes in some of those prototypes will be apart of a new design standard." 1783

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Authorities are investigating a car fire in Spring Valley that may possibly be linked to a fire that scorched part of a La Mesa hair salon less than half an hour before. At around 3:10 a.m. Monday, firefighters and sheriff’s Bomb/Arson investigators were called to the Slay Lounge on 8739 Broadway in La Mesa in response to a fire in a Dumpster. The fire caused some minor damage to the salon and some other businesses at the strip mall.Investigators discovered an object at the scene that may have sparked the blaze.Less than 30 minutes later, crews were called to an import auto car lot in the 9100 block of Campo Road in Spring Valley in response to a car on fire. One car was completely destroyed, and the flames damaged other nearby vehicles. Investigators are trying to determine if the car fire is somehow related to the Dumpster fire in La Mesa. No injuries were reported in either blaze. 921

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Around 400,000 people in San Diego County face hunger, including one in six children. To fight and end hunger in our county, programs like Feeding San Diego bridge the gap for those facing food insecurity and getting access to donations. "We were faced with so many decisions of its either food or paying the bills," said Gabriela Sanchez. Sanchez, a mom of four with a baby on the way, struggled to put food on the table after her husband got sick. "It was hard to even explain to the kids," Sanchez said. Now, she is getting the help she needs through Feeding San Diego's program in Oceanside. The program sets up at San Luis Rey Elementary school, one of their distribution sites, so the community can get access to free healthy food. "It's been a big difference between eating fruit from the cans to eating the fresh fruit and vegetables," Sanchez said. Donate to Month of a Million MealsAccording to Matthew Jennings, Director of Communications at Oceanside Unified School District, access to fresh, healthy food, will help students succeed in the classroom. "When a child shows up for school in the morning, and their belly isn't hungry and they're not worried about what they are going to each for lunch, students and families are able to focus on their education and on their time together," Jennings said. Gabriela Sanchez says the food has made a positive impact in her kids' lives. "With Ivan and Jacob, we've seen so much improvement. They have actually been able to exceed their reading levels, their math levels. They have been able to concentrate more," Sanchez said. The impact Feeding San Diego's program has had on this family is life-changing. "They go, mom, you're always crying, and I'm like it's just a blessing," Sanchez said. Gabriela Sanchez says she is forever grateful. 1823
