SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new report paints a grim picture of the housing supply in San Diego.According to numbers just released by the Southern California Real Estate Research Council, housing permits in San Diego County dropped by 43% through the first six months of 2019, compared to the same period in 2018.So far this year, there have been 2,037 units of housing permitted in San Diego."We are in deep trouble in housing production," says Borre Winckel, the President of the Building Industry Association of San Diego County. "We can't build the housing for the people that need it most."Winckel says decades of increased costs from state and local fees, regulations, labor costs and more have led to this point. He says it's too expensive for developers to build anything that the average San Diegan can afford. He says that's pushing the "workforce" population of teachers, first responders and military out of the market."There will be homelessness, and there will be more workforce displacement to Temecula and points beyond," says Winckel. "That's all because we have screwed up the regulatory environment that exists to build houses for the people that need them."The numbers show a steady decline in housing construction in San Diego.2015: 6,403 permits2016: 6,0362017: 5,2302018: 4,2862019: 2.037 (so far)Winckel says the only solution is to ease regulations and make it easier for companies to build.According to the report, Santa Barbara had a 40% decline, while Los Angeles and San Bernardino had declines in permits around 20%. 1547
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A police pursuit involving a man who failed to yield that started in the Los Angeles area took authorities all the way to San Diego Thursday.The suspect, later identified as Karl Flores, 34, was driving a red Honda Civic when he failed to yield on Washington Boulevard at about 11 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol. The man had first been reported as a stolen vehicle suspect, but police eventually said that was not the case.Flores then took police on a pursuit through the Los Angeles area, at one point hitting a pedestrian riding a scooter. The pedestrian suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to police.WATCH THE PURSUIT LIVE:Flores continued into the Inglewood area before avoiding a PIT maneuver by police that sent the Honda spinning, KABC reported. He continued fleeing police, avoided more PIT maneuver attempts, and drove from southbound Interstate 405 to Interstate 5 into San Diego.The vehicle stopped on I-5 near Las Pulgas Rd. at about 1:30 p.m., prompting a police standoff and Sig Alert was issued for both directions of I-5 at Las Pulgas Rd. CHP said it appeared the vehicle had run out of gas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A mistrial has been declared in the trail of the man accused in the disappearance and murder of his stepson.Tieray Jones was charged with the murder of 2-year-old Jahi Turner. Jahi was last seen at a park near Balboa Park in April of 2002.Jones was facing several charges including 2nd degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. Two jurors found Jones guilty of murder while 10 did not while 10 jurors found Jones guilty of involuntary manslaughter and two did not.RELATED: Stepfather facing trial in Jahi Turner murder?During the trial Friday, the judge asked if jurors would be able to reach a verdict if given more time to deliberate. They responded by saying no. The District Attorney will now decide whether or not to retry Jones. Jones reported the boy missing, telling police Jahi wandered off. Jahi was in Jones’ care while the 2-year-old’s mother was on deployment.A countywide search followed with thousands of people looking for the young boy in the park and Golden Hill neighborhood.People also searched the Miramar Landfill, but Jahi was never found. Jones was arrested in North Carolina and charged in the death in April of 2016.Jones faces 25 years to life in prison. 1232
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A little more than a year in, homeless people using the new storage lockers in Sherman Heights are still having trouble finding homes.According to new numbers released by the San Diego Housing Commission, 895 people have used the storage lockers since they opened last June. But only 9%, 79 of them have been able to find longer-term or permanent housing.Lisa Jones, the Senior Vice President of Homeless Housing Innovations for the SD Housing Commission, admits that number is low. But she says people should not look at it as a condemnation of the project. She says the locker facility isn't designed to help people find housing, but to direct them to resources that can."If this were a shelter program, that's a number we'd expect to be higher," Jones says. "But we see it as a positive number, considering the fact that we don't actually have case management services on that site."However, the storage facility seems to be struggling to connect homeless people with those resources. According to the same study, only 22% of the people using the shelters are currently working with a case manager or social service provider. Of those, only 45.5% met with a case manager in the last week before the survey.But, Jones says the storage site still serves as a critical gateway for homeless people to get help."It's an engagement opportunity that's unique because they're building relationships with the folks as they come in," she says. "They can help reorient them and get them reconnected to services if they're not. And if they are in services, they can make sure they're accessing them to the best effect."Jones also says the new numbers show that neighbors fears of the facility bringing more homeless people to the area are unfounded. An average of 120 people visit the site each day, but they rarely stay in the Sherman Heights area.Before the storage facility opened, 12.5% of the people who answered the survey said they slept in Sherman Heights or Logan Heights. That number has since dropped to 10%. Meanwhile, the number of people sleeping downtown has gone up from 66% to 69.5%.RELATED: Timeline shows history of San Diego's Homeless Storage CentersJones says one of the most significant bright spots from the survey is the fact that 68% of the people using the lockers say they're still actively looking for a place to live. She says that's particularly encouraging because 73% of the facility's users say they are chronically homeless."When you get into that chronic homelessness, your challenges get greater," says Jones. "To some degree, you get disenfranchised or frustrated with the experience. It's the kind of thing where the longer you're homeless, the more challenging that life back into housing can become."Jones also says the lockers have allowed more homeless people to be able to work and go to school. Because of the lockers, they don't have to bring their belongings with them everywhere they go or worry about them being stolen overnight."We have people in these programs that are employed, that are bringing in work boots and tools at night because they don't want to store them on the street," says Jones. "We have people that use the programs that are in school, and they keep books and laptops and things like that in there."There's a value to the safety and security that you can't see in numbers." 3361
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A new program vows to help buy houses for teachers who are working on making it in San Diego.“It's not huge to a lot of people, but it's more space than we've ever had,” says Amy Noble as she takes us on a tour of the new house that she and her husband, Eric, bought in South Orange County. They’re high school educators and got married years ago, but home ownership seemed impossible for them. “The rent for apartments was so much that we really didn't have a good opportunity to save,” says Amy.RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Key saving steps helped renter buy her first home“We're the only private company right now that's focusing exclusively on educators,” says Nikki Lowy with Landed.Lowy says the company has already helped about 200 educators buy homes in expensive cities like Denver, Los Angeles and Seattle. Now, the company is making its way into San Diego.“[Teachers] are so important to the safety and well being and health of our communities and yet a lot of them don't see a future in the communities,” Lowy adds.Landed reportedly gives educators half the down payment for the house. In exchange, educators share 25 percent of the investment gain or loss with Landed.
