ZHENGZHOU, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Jia Qinglin urged making all-out efforts to ensure economic growth, care for the lives of people and ensure stability during a research trip.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the call during a visit to central Henan Province from April 17 to 23, where he visited enterprises, urban and rural communities, research agencies and colleges.     There had been positive changes in China's economic development as the central government's macroeconomic policies started to pay off, Jia said. But downward pressure was still great, said Jia, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. Jia Qinglin made an inspection tour in Henan Province on April 17-23Jia called for more support for companies, especially small and medium-sized ones, and help enterprises to increase exports and carry out technological upgrading.     He urged government departments to resolve the employment problems of rural workers and college graduates and expand the coverage of basic pension and health-care systems as well as the minimum living allowance system.     Great importance should be attached to work safety and the quality and safety of food and medicine, Jia said.     He also urged better work on promoting grain production, increasing farmers' incomes, building housing for low-income earners and improving the development of small towns.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan met with visiting chairman of the U.S. Economic Recovery Advisory Board Paul Volcker here Wednesday when they saw eye-to-eye on stepping up dialogue and cooperation.     During the meeting, they agreed to make concerted efforts to develop the Sino-American "positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship for the 21st century", which Chinese President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama agreed to build during their meeting in London in April. They also exchanged views on the current global economic and financial situation, and both of them acknowledged that economies of the two countries are increasingly interdependent.     Volcker, who took office in February as head of the newly formed organization, has served as Chairman of the Federal Reserve under President Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan's administrations.     The veteran central banker reportedly accomplished to tame raging inflation in the 1980s by raising interest rates and restricting the money supply.     China and the United States are recently keeping close communication on issues of common concerns.     Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited China in late May. Following her heels, delegations of U.S. congress, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and several other senior U.S. officials also paid visits to China, to seek cooperation with China in fields such as climate change and combating financial crisis.

Quoted by U.S. local media, neighbors said that Kellermann, who worked for Freddie Mac for the past 16 years, lost an amount of weight after he took the new job.     Despite persuasion by neighbors that he should quit his job to release the pressure, Kellermann insisted that he would stay and help the company through its problems.     After Kellermann's death, John Koskinen, the company's interim chief executive, said in a statement that Kellermann is "a man of great talents," and "his extraordinary work ethic and integrity inspired all who worked with him."     Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said in a statement "our deepest sympathies are with his family and his colleagues at Freddie Mac during this difficult time."     According to a report from the New York Times, Kellermann had received a bonus of about 800,000 dollars since the government take-over, which, as a part of totaled 210 million dollars for executives at Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, has prompted scrutiny from lawmakers who have questioned bonuses for executives of firms receiving government bailouts.

  

  

BEIJING, May 11 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council Monday published a guideline to maintain current agricultural development and promote income for farmers.     The guideline was issued on the Chinese central government's official Web portal www.gov.cn.     It consists of 22 items in eight parts, calling for more efforts to expand domestic demand, promote exports and stabilize grains' prices.     The guideline calls for more support for spring sowing, including pest control, guarding against natural disasters and science and technology services.     It also stresses the importance of granting subsidies to farmers and setting grain prices.
