AUSTIN, Texas – Inside a restaurant called “The Pita Shack,” Ayman Attar Bashi recreates part of his culture through the food served in his restaurant. “We are lucky,” he said. He and his family are lucky because a decade ago, they fled violence in Iraq, becoming refugees and resettling in Austin, Texas. “To be a refugee is not a choice,” he said. “Not a choice.” Refugees like Ayman, though, may no longer be able to count on Texas for a fresh start. Governor Greg Abbott said the state has already done more than its fair share. In a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Gov. Abbott said that since 2010, “…roughly 10% of all refugees resettled in the United States have been placed in Texas.” He added that, “in addition to accepting refugees all these years, Texas has been left by Congress to deal with disproportionate migration issues resulting from a broken federal immigration system.” “There had been 41 other governors that had had come out and said, ‘yes, our state we would love to continue to accept refugees’ and that was a mix of Democrats and Republican governors, and so Gov. Abbott was the very first who had said no,” said Russell Smith, with Refugee Services of Texas, the largest resettlement agency in a state. Last year, Texas took in 2,227 refugees – the most of any state. It was followed by Washington, with 1,930 and California with 1,802. Overall, America is admitting fewer refugees. Back in 2016, President Barack Obama set a limit of 110,000 for the 2017 fiscal year. This year, President Donald Trump is setting a limit of 18,000. Though a judge put a temporary stop to the Texas plan, the potential for refugees to be rejected looms large here. “Every action has negatively affected resettlement at the same time,” Smith said. Whether the plan eventually goes through – or gets permanently rejected by the courts – remains to be seen. Back at his restaurant, Ayman says he and his family feel safe and welcomed in Austin. “You’re an active element in this community because we’re hiring people, we are providing people with good food, spread our culture – at the end of the day, you feel like you are doing a lot of good things in this community,” he said.The Trump administration has not said yet whether it will seek to appeal the federal judge’s decision, which stopped Texas from refusing refugees. 2356

CYPRESS, Calif. -- It’s Friday the 13th and finals week at Cypress College in Southern California. A chilling combination for some, but for other students it’s just another day at school. They’re studying for a career that’s not for everybody – but a career that will eventually impact just about everyone. These students are prepping for their final exams in mortuary science, a degree where they can make a living while dealing with death.“This is from what I’ve learned is a gasket casket,” said Karla Ruiz, a Cypress College mortuary science student. Ruiz has a goal of advancing her career from a local morgue to national security. “I’m really into watching a bunch of CIA stuff or like crime stuff,” she said. “So, I want to find something that can open the door for that.” Cypress College is one of about 60 colleges across the country that offer this kind of end-of-life education. It may seem like a grim career choice, but the mortuary science industry is now attracting different kind of demographics. “As far as male female it’s certainly changed,” said Damon de la Cruz, Cypress College mortuary science assistant professor. “It wouldn’t be hard for us to see in a graduating class of 20 something like three males and 17 females. It’s really shifted in that direction.” It’s a direction where there’s now a growing demand for qualified workers. “There’s not enough students to meet the demand of the community,” de la Cruz said. “As result of that many of our students are placed or they get hired before they even graduate.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the median annual wage for morticians, undertakers and funeral directors is more than ,000 a year. Funeral service managers can make closer to ,000. “I’ve been in this industry for a long time and I’ve had many opportunities presented to me to where I’ve grown, been able to afford a house, and be able to live comfortably in southern California,” said Harbor Lawn Mortuary funeral director Michael Roudebush. Roudebush has hired several Cypress College students through the years. He says a career in mortuary science can be financially rewarding but also emotionally draining “Empathetic and compassionate people are what we’re always looking for,” Roudebush said. “We are people too and we’ve been through what the families have been through. We all experience loss.” Back on the college campus, students like Ruiz are gaining an understanding of death that they can use for a lifetime. She says that after studying death, she now appreciates life more. “Ever since doing this I’m closer to my family,” she said. “I actually want to go home and hang out with them.”A celebration of life that comes from knowing exactly what others have lost. 2746

She says Holly is one of the most helpful employees on staff. “It’s really fast and helps us with the speed a lot,” she says.The creator behind this artificial intelligence technology is Valyant. Rob Carpenter, the CEO of the company, says as jobs evolve and change, new jobs become available. As with most new technology, Carpenter says they’re still working out all the kinks. “It’s almost understanding the almost infinite ways to that people can ask for a cheeseburger,” Carpenter explains. “There are also the different accents you have to content with and the background noises.” While customers find the idea of Holly fun, their still unsure. “It was awkward,” says one customer. “And humans are just better and more responsive and talkative.” Carpenter admits Holly isn't the perfect employee, but he says in the next five years, you will see more robots at big name stores and fast-food restaurants."Right now, this is ground zero handling drive through,” he says. “Eventually, we are going to start seeing it in more tangible ways, where it can actually carry on a more fluid conversation." It’s a path he didn’t expect for himself because he never saw ranchers or farmers who looked like him. “Growing up in west Texas, I didn’t even like ag when I was a kid. It was a white man’s game, and we weren’t allowed to play,” Wiggins said. However, as Wiggins' family grew, he started to realize the importance of good nutrition and his passion for agriculture took root. “I had kids and community members that needed this. Our community – the African American community – suffers a lot from diabetes, cancers, diseases that could be controlled by eating habits.
