CHICAGO, Ill. – The national conversation continues to be dominated by the state of race relations in the United States. Five decades after the civil rights movement, there is still division.Naomi Davis and Sherrilynn Bevel both lived through that groundbreaking era and have insightful perspectives on how the country should move forward with a focus on racial equality.“I grew up in St. Albans Queens, where mom is the president of everything and all the lawns were cut and all the kids were college-bound and it was Martin, it was Malcolm and it was all great things were possible,” said Davis, the CEO of Blacks in Green on Chicago’s South Side.Davis says her organization has set out to fulfill a vision for self-sustaining Black communities.“We have a mission to create walk to work, walk to shop, walk to learn, walk to play villages, where African-American families own the property, own the businesses,” said Davis.Bevel is a nonviolence trainer, as well as the daughter of iconic civil rights pioneers and freedom riders Diane Nash and James Bevel. Both fought for desegregation and civil rights alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.“My father always talked about creating dramas that allow people to see themselves and have to decide who they were in the bigger picture,” said Bevel.Her father was with Dr. King in Memphis and witnessed his assassination in April 1968.“After I was born even, the civil rights workers were finding there will be small communities where Black men's bodies were found in cotton fields and that kind of thing and my mother shared that she had spent like days trying to convince somebody from one of the wire services to come down and report on a body that they had found,” said Bevel. “And it just wasn't news. It wasn’t news.”Both women point to education and more listening as the core path to resolution and coexistence.“We haven't been serious for a long time about educating our citizens,” Bevel said. “And I don't just mean Black and brown people in the inner cities. We have these pockets of rural America where young poor and working-class whites do not understand where their interests run right in line with other working people of color.”Davis says the path forward is a reckoning where the disenfranchised finally get priority at the front of the line, either through reparations or systematic redirection of resources.“That's the math of it,” said Davis. “If you're going to solve for disparity,

Capping days of commemorations of her extraordinary life, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg becomes the first woman in American history to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol.Ginsburg, who died last week at age 87, also will be the first Jewish-American to lie in state and just the second Supreme Court justice. CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) — Extreme heat swept through San Diego County Friday, with many areas reaching triple-digit temperatures. But some residents said they were more miserable than usual, as their power was shut off for half the day.The heatwave is here, and for those living in the deserts, things are just unbearable."My swamp cooler is going 24 hours, and I've got my ceiling fan going!" Campo resident Karen McIntyre said.But McIntyre says she is one of the lucky ones. She is worried more about her family living in Lake Morena, who, for about half the day, did not have any power."During the middle of a pandemic, during the middle of an extreme heatwave, they still send out notices advising them that they're going to be turning the power off today!" McIntyre said about her power company, SDGE.Although dated July 27, McIntrye says her family in Lake Morena received a letter from SDGE explaining the planned power outage on July 30, less than 24 hours before the planned outage. She said she had to scramble to get her two-year-old niece a place to cool off."She has a medical condition where she has to have her oxygen," McIntyre said. "She's on a feeding tube, and she has to stay in a cool house. And going out to another place or another home is stressful for her."The County has set up a few Cool Zones in East County. But McIntyre says her family and many others do not have the means to get there."That’s still too far away for a lot of people who have limited transportation," McIntyre said.SDGE says due to the extreme heat, it canceled all non-critical planned outages for Friday and the weekend. Carnival Cruise Lines announced Wednesday that it had canceled most cruises that were scheduled to embark from U.S. through the end of January 2021.In addition, the company announced that all cruises embarking from Baltimore; Charleston, South Carolina; Long Beach, California; Mobile, Alabama; New Orleans and San Diego has been canceled through the end of February and that all cruises on the Carnival Legend that embark from Tampa, Florida had been canceled through March 28.In a tweet, Carnival said that when it restarts operations in 2021, it will focus on cruises embarking from Miami and Port Canaveral, Florida.
