SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The widow of a fallen firefighter is opening up about giving birth without the love of her life by her side.Cal Fire Firefighter Engineer Cory Iverson died battling the Thomas Fire in Ventura County in December.His wife, Ashley, was pregnant with their second daughter at the time. Taylor Ivy Frances Iverson was born just a few weeks ago."She looks just like this little twin, especially right after she came out it was a big relief to have her out and to see him again and feel like I was looking into his eyes again," said Ashley.It's been five months since Cory died, but Ashley said it still doesn't seem real. "People will say to me, I can't possibly imagine going through that, and my response is neither can I, cause it really doesn't feel like it's me going through all of this," said Ashley.She was surrounded by family and friends in the hospital the day Taylor was born, but it was the voicemail she played from her late husband while in the delivery room that helped her get through labor."All the doctors were crying, but it just flipped right then and there. It's the most special voice mail I have from him basically talking about how special our relationship is and how grateful he is for us," said Ashley.Ashley wants to honor Cory's memory by starting a foundation to help first responders deal with the trauma they see on the job."The things that they see and experience are things that the human brain can't just push out, it needs to be worked through," said Ashley.As heartbroken as she is, she's always thinking about the men and women who were on the fire lines with Cory the day he died."Through trust and communication, these men and women can heal," said Ashley. Even in her darkest moments, she is overwhelmed with gratitude."My hope is that people out there hold on to whatever faith that they have because through any struggle with your faith and gratitude, it will get you through." 1942

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The woman who was shot in the forehead by a police bean bag during Saturday's protest in La Mesa is slowly recovering but her attorney told 10News that the family is still desperate for details from police about what happened.10News has video of 59-year-old Leslie Furcron as she was recording a Facebook Live. She is heard yelling and then the phone drops and the screen goes black.“She was struck in the forehead with a ballistic bean bag projectile,” said attorney Dante Pride during Thursday’s interview with 10News.Pride said Furcron was among the thousands of people in front of the La Mesa Police Department. He said that she was peacefully protesting police violence and the killing of George Floyd when he said that it all turned to chaos and an officer fired at Furcron. On Wednesday, the department said that once officers deemed the gathering to be an unlawful assembly, they began to use measures to disperse protestors, including tear gas and bean bag rounds. Furcron was placed in a medically induced coma with a breathing tube, which was just removed. “On June 3rd, they took the tube out of Ms. Furcron’s mouth. She is still is unable to speak at this point and she did have a surgery I believe on the 2nd to repair the damage to her forehead,” added Pride. He said that doctors still don’t know if she’ll lose an eye.On Thursday afternoon, La Mesa Police reported that the investigation is ongoing and there are no new details to release.Pride said he believes that a third party should be investigating the incident and that the officer who fired the bean bag should face criminal charges if it's deemed appropriate. “There should never be a point in time where an officer should shoot a metal projectile bean bag from an elevated position down on a crowd. That is dangerous and it can kill people and it almost killed Ms. Furcron,” he added.Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez tweeted about the use of less lethal weapons on protestors. Her tweet reads, “In response to recent days filled with images of peaceful protestors maimed by rubber bullets, we will be introducing legislation to set clear standards on how law enforcement should (and shouldn’t) use these weapons. On Thursday, her office sent 10News the following statement:“No one who is simply exercising their right to protest should face possible injury or death because officers are indiscriminately firing rubber bullets into a crowd. Breaking a city-imposed curfew is not a sufficient basis for use of rubber bullets. Crowd control where there is no rioting is not proper grounds to use rubber bullets. It is past time for the State of California to set clear standards on when and how these bullets are used by law enforcement.” 2736

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The register sex offender accused of kidnapping and raping a three-year-old Oak Park girl pleaded not guilty to five felony counts Wednesday. Francisco "Freddy" Diaz now faces up to life in prison if convicted. Diaz is being held without bail. The young girl’s father, Silvester Soltero, says he was working on his car when his neighbor broke into a bedroom window, grabbing his sleeping daughter.Soltero says Diaz’ mother brought his daughter home, but she wasn’t wearing any pants. Soltero said when he asked his daughter what happened, she told him the man touched her private parts.RELATED: Man arrested after three-year-old says she was kidnapped and touchedWhen the father asked who the man was, Soltero said his daughter pointed to Diaz. When the father approached Diaz, Soltero said he became hostile, even threatening to kill him if he snitched.The two men then started fighting when Diaz reportedly tried to poke Soltero in the eye with a fork. After he ran off, San Diego Police caught Diaz a short distance away. After his arrest, Soltero learned his neighbor was a registered sex offender.“They should have told me, they should have told me I was living next to a pedophile, If I had known I wouldn’t have brought my daughter around here, there’s no way in hell," he said.Diaz was convicted in 2006 for molesting three girls on the playground near Oak Park Elementary School, right across the street from his mother’s house. Diaz was sentenced to eight years in prison, in part because he already had a criminal history. In 2000, Diaz was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon and making a terrorist threat.San Diego Police say Diaz was in full compliance with the terms of Megan's Law. He is required to check in with police every year and he does so, said Lt. Jason Weeden.Because Diaz' child molestation convictions were misdemeanors, he doesn't have to steer clear of schools and playgrounds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The woman who stole a car with two children inside before driving to the U.S-Mexico border in 2018 has been sentenced to 13 years in prison. Police say Leslie Esparanza Saenz, 27, stole a car with an 8-year-old and 3-year-old inside outside a Cricket Wireless store on the 200 block of Euclid Avenue April 9, 2018. According to police, the children’s father parked the gold Hyundai Excel outside the store and went into the business by himself, leaving the vehicle unlocked. Moments later, Saenz got into the car and drove off on Imperial Avenue. RELATED: Not guilty plea from woman accused of stealing car with children insideThe vehicle was spotted later that afternoon when the Hyundai arrived at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. There, federal agents who had gotten a be-on-the-lookout bulletin regarding the auto theft and kidnapping took the driver - who was later identified as Saenz -- into custody without incident. Authorities then reunited the children, who had suffered no injuries during the ordeal, with their father and returned his car to him, Roman said. 1096

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Police Department is taking over the Chargers old practice facility, a source tells 10News.The official takeover happened Nov. 28. According to information obtained by Team 10, the facility will be repurposed and converted into a police facility housing several San Diego Police Department divisions and units.The facility has been used off and on since the Chargers left, the City of San Diego reports.In October, Team 10 discovered the utility and maintenance bills were piling up, even though the site was vacant.RELATED: Former Chargers practice facility still costing the City of San Diego moneyAccording to data analyzed by Team 10, the electric bill for August 2018 was ,949.78.
