EL PASO, Texas (AP) — As many as 2,000 U.S. inspectors who screen cargo and vehicles at ports of entry along the Mexican border may be reassigned to help handle the surge of Central American families coming across, the Trump administration said Monday.The temporary reassignments, up from the current 750 inspectors, threaten to slow the movement of trucks bringing TVs, medical devices and other goods into the U.S. and cause delays for cross-border commuters who come for work or school.The inspectors are instead being put to work processing migrants, taking their applications for asylum and transporting them to holding centers.Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said the reassignments are necessary to help manage a huge influx of migrants that is straining the system and overflowing border facilities."The crisis at our border is worsening, and DHS will do everything in its power to end it," Nielsen said.The effects of pulling inspectors from ports of entry were on display in El Paso, where thousands of border crossers lined up Monday, waiting about an hour to cross into the U.S. They included vendors, U.S. citizens and students with visas.Sergio Amaya, 24, a student at the University of Texas-El Paso, is an American citizen who lives in Juarez. EL CAJON (KGTV) - Amid the new COVID-19 restrictions, some local churches are expected to begin holding services outdoors.At Shadow Mountain Church in El Cajon, the sounds of the gospel have been a bit more crisp."Sound is incredible. No echoes, feels intimate ... like church," said Pastor David Jeremiah.Jeremiah says last month, when it became clear COVID-19 capacity restrictions would be too limiting indoors, they decided to move their services outside."Turned out to be a perfect amphitheater," said Jeremiah.A stage has been set up in one of their parking lots. The seating is sectioned off by families, each grouping set 6 feet apart. Services have been moved to the evening to escape the heat. Masks and bottled water are handed out to those who need them. Any singing is mostly limited to musicians on stage to minimize the coronavirus risk."It's our way of doing church. It's the only thing we can do so that's what we do," said Jeremiah.It's also going to be what other churches will do after recent coronavirus restrictions banned indoor church services. At the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Mira Mesa, an email was sent out announcing weekend outdoor masses.In Poway, officials approved a plan to share park space with places of worship and fitness centers. The city of El Cajon is also weighing a similar plan. Jeremiah says those actions are much needed, because there is no substitute to gathering in person."Church is when God's people come together, and we want to make it possible for people to come together as much as possible, as much as we can, within the context of what we're experiencing with this pandemic," said Jeremiah. 1662

EL CAJON, CA (KGTV) -- Before the COVID-19 pandemic, many low-income seniors would make weekly visits to their local clinic for treatment. But now times have changed, and so has the way they see their doctor. St. Paul's PACE in El Cajon has made a major adjustment in providing care for their elderly patients. They are now ofering what you might call a clinic on four wheels. "They used to come to the clinic for services, which some still do. But because of self isolation, and the fear of being in a crowded place, we have found a way to take care of them in a different manner," says St. Paul's PACE Medical Director Dr. Victor LeeAnd their new way of helping patients is what they are calling a roving clinic. It's basically the comforts of a doctors office, all inside a van"Our staff came up with some creative ways, and one of the ways was to create and convert a van into a clinic. So we can go to their homes to take care of them."The van is considered a safe place for patients who do not feel comfortable seeking treatment at home, or at the clinic."Doctors can examine them, and nurses can do their vital signs Whatever we can do in the clinic we try and replicate inside the van."There are currently close to 1,000 patients in the St. Paul's PACE program, many of whom Dr. Lee describes as frail with multiple medical problems. So the roving clinic has been a life saver. "They love it. We go to their place, we park outside their apartment, or even in a parking lot. Somewhere where there is privacy, we take care of them right there." 1563

(KGTV) - After a series of crashes over the summer, people in El Cajon are calling on the city to add some safety measures to the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Renette Avenue."It's very dangerous," says Julia Reyes, who lives near the intersection. "We have a lot of families and kids crossing through here. We have two schools near here too.""It's a regular race track," says David Pina, who also lives on the corner. He recently replaced the fence in his yard because a suspected drunk driver plowed into it over Memorial Day weekend."We were all in the house and heard a big bang in the street and all of the sudden, boom, right in the yard," he says.The intersection has stop signs for cars headed East and West. There are also cones and left-turn restrictions in the middle of the intersection. Pina says that only makes it worse."That sign ends up in the street all the time," he says of the "No Left Turn" sign in the middle of the road. He adds that people ignore the cones and drive straight through the intersection illegally.Neighbors have asked the city to install traffic-calming measures. They think a stop sign, speed humps, flashing lights or a sturdier barrier could be a solution.10News reached out to the City of El Cajon to see if there have been any discussions about adding safety measures to the intersection. A spokesperson from the Department of Public Works asked us to submit a formal public records request. Because of the holiday weekend for Labor Day, the city has not had a chance to reply to that submission.For Pina, he hopes something can be done soon. He worries that the next crash may cost him more than just a fence."My grandson sleeps in that front room," he says. "You gotta worry about the kids. I if somebody did come through that fence and come into the house, there's no chance for anybody.
