During a time where a large number of Florida residents are without power in the wake of Hurricane Irma, two Florida men were caught attempting to steal a ,500 utility pole.42-year-old Blake Lee Waller and 46-year-old Victor Walter Apeler were arrested on grand theft charges Wednesday after someone reported seeing them load the pole onto the top of their car, according to the Jacksonville sheriff’s office.A police report says that the two were spotted driving with the pole on top of their vehicle, they were then stopped by officials and arrested.The report says that one of the men told officials that he had to move the pole because it was on the ground so close to traffic lanes, according to the Associated Press.The sheriff's office tweeted a picture of the shirtless men sitting handcuffed on the sidewalk next to the car carrying the utility pole.  895

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - An El Cajon police officer's encounter with a group spray-painting graffiti ended in remarkable fashion early Wednesday morning.Sgt. Mike Murphy was on patrol around 2 a.m. when he got a radio call reporting people in dark clothing tagging along Heart Drive."Saw three males with dark clothing. Hit them with a spotlight and told them to have a seat, which they all did," said Sgt. Murphy.Two other patrol officers were called to the scene. The three men in their late 20s had spray paint under their nails, with fresh paint on the sidewalk and the wall of a business. Sgt. Murphy decided to take a closer look."I saw messages, not of hate, but of peace and love ... the peace sign and 'BLM.' Just had a discussion. 'You're not trying to say anything mean or hateful. Why did you choose a wall?' I understand the frustration of everything going on. Talked about, if this happened to their house, would they be upset? They apologized, and all agreed the avenue they chose was a wrong one. And they came up with, 'What if we fix this?' I said, 'I'd like to help you with that,'" said Sgt. Murphy.Sgt. Murphy, who says he had enough to make an arrest, decided to let them go and asked them meet at the same location that same evening, where he would help them clean up."Having them arrested, how is that going to help the message they're trying to put out? The vandalism would still be on the wall," said Murphy.At 7 p.m. Wednesday, the three men showed up with paint and rollers. Together with Sgt. Murphy, they painted over the graffiti."These men were true to their word. What better way to show not just how the department treats its citizens, but how the citizens treat our city. EL CAJON (KGTV) - Amid the new COVID-19 restrictions, some local churches are expected to begin holding services outdoors.At Shadow Mountain Church in El Cajon, the sounds of the gospel have been a bit more crisp."Sound is incredible. No echoes, feels intimate ... like church," said Pastor David Jeremiah.Jeremiah says last month, when it became clear COVID-19 capacity restrictions would be too limiting indoors, they decided to move their services outside."Turned out to be a perfect amphitheater," said Jeremiah.A stage has been set up in one of their parking lots. The seating is sectioned off by families, each grouping set 6 feet apart. Services have been moved to the evening to escape the heat. Masks and bottled water are handed out to those who need them. Any singing is mostly limited to musicians on stage to minimize the coronavirus risk."It's our way of doing church. It's the only thing we can do so that's what we do," said Jeremiah.It's also going to be what other churches will do after recent coronavirus restrictions banned indoor church services. At the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Mira Mesa, an email was sent out announcing weekend outdoor masses.In Poway, officials approved a plan to share park space with places of worship and fitness centers. The city of El Cajon is also weighing a similar plan. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- An El Cajon police officer responding to a traffic-related call was hospitalized Monday morning after being dragged by an SUV and then struck by another vehicle. Police have identified the suspect as 41-year-old David Francis Cepeda Pangilinan. He is a 5'6" Guamanian male with short brown hair and brown eyes. El Cajon police said officers were called to the 100 block of Washington Avenue at around 8:30 a.m. in response to a vehicle blocking the street with the driver “asleep or unresponsive behind the wheel.”Officers arrived to find the driver and a female passenger asleep inside a black 2019 Volkswagen SUV with California license plate 8LCE117.According to El Cajon police: “When officers woke the occupants, the driver provided identification for someone other than himself and officers began to investigate.During this contact, the driver suddenly started the vehicle and began to put it into gear. One of the officers attempted to detain the driver and keep him from fleeing the scene.In doing so, the officer was trapped in the vehicle and dragged for a distance as the driver fled.As the driver fled with the officer still partially inside the vehicle, the officer was struck by another vehicle that was traveling in the roadway.The officer was ejected from the vehicle and sustained significant injuries.”According to police, the injured officer was taken to the hospital and is in critical but stable condition. No other injuries were reported.A neighbor was doing yard work when the incident happened and watched it unfold."I heard my son scream and crying so I turn around and I see officer down. I run to the officer but the other police man came. The guy was out, completely out. Blood was coming out of his nose, his mouth and his head. And his eyes were rolled in the back of his head. The other officer came and put his hand on his head. I start praying for the guy, the next thing we know we see him move.
