SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fixes are coming to elevators in a 14-story high-rise in downtown San Diego where senior tenants have faced challenges performing everyday tasks. But not soon enough for many.Some residents of the 65 and older Tower Apartments community have missed important appointments and had difficulties running errands, like trips to the grocery store, because of elevator outages.Some residents told 10News it's a long-running issue.RELATED: Seniors left with one elevator in 14-floor?San Diego buildingThe building is undergoing renovations - which residents say they appreciate. But they say the upgrades don't make it ok to shut down one of the two elevators and leave them with an elevator that they describe as unreliable at best. "Everybody is extremely upset," resident Carol Clark said. "And the thing is we don't seem to be getting many answers."One neighbor in a wheelchair broke down in tears during our interview. "It's people's safety," he said. "Not just mine, but everybody else."Shortly after running the story on 10News, management with the apartment complex sent a letter telling residents one of the elevators under renovations should be running by the end of June. After that, the other elevator that has had problems will be upgraded.Management said they will also schedule input meetings with residents for next week. 1372

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday that a rise in coronavirus cases is worrying, and warned counties to heed statewide precautions and enforce them.He doubled down on his warning, saying if individual counties did not enforce the state's guidance, they can lose funding."We cannot support bad behaviors, but we want to encourage and support good behavior," Newsom said. "And if counties simply are going to (flout) the rules and regulations that they attested to, the information that they put online and said, `We agreed to this criteria.' ... If they decide, `well, you know what, even though the numbers are going up, we're done, we've got this, we're just going to ... dismiss these new rules and regulations' -- we're going to attach some considerations, some consequences to that. The governor added, "we don't intend to do that, we don't want to do that, but I want to make this clear - we are prepared to do that if we must."Last week, Newsom issued a statewide facial covering order for residents in high-risk settings, with exceptions, to address a rise in cases throughout the state. He said Wendesday that the most recent 14-day average of people testing positive for the virus in California overall is 5.1%, up from 4.6% earlier this month. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Father Joe's Villages hosted two Thanksgiving meal services Wednesday for homeless residents in San Diego, but perhaps no one was more thankful than the people who helped prepare the food.Three chefs-in-training in the Father Joe’s Culinary Arts Program spent days preparing the turkey dinner, which was served to an estimated 2,300 to 2,600 people.“They changed my life by far,” student Brian Anziano said of Father Joe’s.Anziano said he got involved in “stupid stuff” last year that left him homeless, but at the suggestion of friend, he began turning his life around with the help of Father Joe’s.Anziano enrolled in the 15-week culinary course, considered the most rigorous of the 10 workforce development programs offered by Father Joe’s.“They buy your shoes, they buy your pants, they buy your uniform,” he said. “Everything you need.”The massive Thanksgiving meal is kind of like a midterm, said Culinary Arts Program instructor chef Theresa Fields.“We work 14 hour days, 16 hour days. We’re always on call,” said student Lister Lane with a smile.Lane said his dream is to graduate and open his own restaurant. “And I want to give back to the homeless like they helped me,” he said.Past graduates have gone from these kitchens to jobs at Kansas City Barbeque, PETCO Park, the Hard Rock Hotel, Amplified Ale Works and more, FIelds said.Father Joe’s said about 80 students have graduated from its various workforce training programs so far, and they’re on pace to graduate about 100 students by the end of the year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Drug maker Moderna announced it had started the process of testing its COVID-19 vaccine on children ages 12 to 17. The company dosed the first adolescents Thursday.“I think all of us are interested in getting control of this pandemic, and I think one of the opportunities here is to be able to immunize children also,” said Dr. Stephen Spector. He leads Moderna’s Phase 3 clinical trial on adults at UC San Diego. “We’re interested in participating; we haven’t heard yet from the sponsor.”Spector is also a pediatrician and said generally, children tolerate viral vaccines better than adults. This study will answer many important questions.“Are there possible adverse effects in children that weren’t seen in adults, and will they be more severe?” he said.“The primary concerns now are whether or not the vaccine will be safe in children, and whether it will provide the same immune response in children as was seen in adults.”Spector said once those factors have been determined, the vaccine can likely be approved to be used on children.“Because we already know the vaccine works in adults, given the immune response will be a determinant of vaccine efficacy, you see that in children, then the vaccine can be approved for them as well,” he explained.Data released by Moderna showed the vaccine efficacy against COVID-19 was 94 percent in adult participants, and the company has requested emergency use authorization from the FDA.“I’m not going to minimize that there have been some side effects, but they’re usually short-lasting, maybe a day or two of three days at most,” he said. “The fact that the vaccine is over 90 percent effective really puts it in the same realm as measles, rubella, and other kinds of vaccines that have been tremendously successful in containing viral infections.”Moderna will split the participants into two separate groups, half getting the placebo and the other half getting two vaccine shots 28 days apart.The company hopes to enroll 3,000 young people in the study, with a goal of generating data in the spring of 2021 and potentially vaccinating kids shortly after, in time for the next school year.“At this point, there are convincing data that the vaccine works, the FDA will review that data next week, and the expectation is there will be an emergency use approval by the end of next week for the vaccine,” said Spector. 2389
