To stop the spread of the coronavirus, WHO’s emergencies chief, Dr. Michael Ryan, said Monday that the “shocking” rate of COVID-19 cases and deaths, particularly in the U.S., mean that people shouldn’t get too close to their loved ones this year. That means with or without a mask on. “The epidemic in the U.S. is punishing. It’s widespread," said Dr. Michael Ryan. "It’s quite frankly, shocking, to see one to two persons a minute die in the U.S. — a country with a wonderful, strong health system (and) amazing technological capacities,” he said.Dr. Ryan called the pandemic “brutal” in the U.S., which accounts for about a third of all COVID-19 cases globally. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A Grand Rapids teen is making sure your morning cup of coffee stays brewing for years to come with the launch of her new coffee line, Joven Coffee."Joven means 'young' in Spanish, so that is why we chose it because we're supporting young farmers," said Frankie Volekma, founder of Joven Coffee.At 14, Frankie is the youngest coffee Q grader in the world and is launching the coffee line to support the next generation of coffee farmers."We're just trying to make it a viable career option for a lot of these young farmers because a lot of times it's a low paying career to be in coffee farming," she said.In coffee producing countries like Columbia and regions of Africa, farmers are primarily 57 years old or older.Frankie's concern is those farmers will eventually retire, and there won't be enough young farmers to take their place."I think it's an important issue, and you're going to hear more about it over time," said Frankie's dad, Tim Volekma, owner of Sparrow Coffee and Schuil Coffee. Garth Brooks has decided it’s someone else’s turn to win the Entertainer of the Year award from the Country Music Association Awards.The announcement came during a Facebook Live on Brooks’ page during a remote press conference.Brooks has won the award seven times."It's time for somebody else to hold the award and know what entertainer of the year feels like," he said.He said after last year’s CMA ceremony, there was one tweet that really stuck with him."It said, 'Why doesn't he step down and have entertainer of the year be for the next generation’. I 100 percent agreed," Brooks said.Brooks talked to the association about creating some sort of entertainer of the year emeritus.However, the Country Music Association said they were unable to control who is nominated for which category. “It’s not our call, we can’t pull you out of an award” they reportedly told Brooks.“We are going to do it ourselves. We are going to pull out from the entertainer of the year,” Brooks announced.Brooks said he is not withdrawing from other categories or award shows, "I'm very competitive, the awards mean the world to me" Brooks said. HONG KONG – Scientists at the University of Hong Kong claim to have the first evidence of someone being reinfected with the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.They said Monday that genetic tests show a 33-year-old man returning to Hong Kong from a trip to Spain in mid-August had a different strain of the virus than the one he’d previously been infected with in March.The man had mild symptoms the first time and none the second time, so his previous infection may have helped prevent serious illness.Experts say waning immunity could have implications for vaccine development and that the case shows the need to keep up social distancing and other prevention measures.Dr. Kelvin Kai-Wang To, who led the group of scientists, told The Associated Press that it’s unknown how many people can get reinfected, but there are probably more out there.Even if someone can be infected a second time, it’s not known if they have some protection against serious illness, because the immune system generally remembers how to make antibodies against a virus it’s seen before. 1069
