SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) — Students were allowed Tuesday to retrieve belongings left behind when they evacuated their Southern California school last week after a teen shot five classmates, killing two.Classes at Saugus High in Santa Clarita were canceled until Dec. 2, but administrators scheduled counseling sessions this week to help students, staff and relatives deal with last Thursday’s shooting.Investigators still don’t know why Nathaniel Tennosuke Berhow opened fire in a campus quad and then shot himself in the head. The 16-year-old died Friday.RELATED: Mass shootings in the United States: When, where they have occurred in 2019The last hospitalized victim, a 15-year-old girl, went home Monday, according to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center spokeswoman Pat Aidem.A wounded 14-year-old girl was released from the same hospital Friday. A 14-year-old boy was treated and released Thursday. The dead were identified as 15-year-old Gracie Anne Muehlberger and 14-year-old Dominic Blackwell.Thousands of people attended a candlelight vigil a city park Sunday night.RELATED: Santa Clarita high school shooting: 2 killed, 3 hurt; suspected shooter in 'grave' conditionMike Kuhlman, deputy superintendent for William S. Hart Union High School District, said students could pick up their belongings from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday.“I think I'm just nervous for the kids,” parent Sarah Acosta told KABC-TV. “I think they lost a little of their innocence through this whole thing.”Returning students hugged one another, greeted teachers and pet therapy dogs that were on hand. Outside the school there was a large memorial of flowers, photos and handwritten notes.“It’s with a heavy heart that we approach this task,” Mike Kuhlman, deputy superintendent for William S. Hart Union High School District, said of the retrieval of students’ personal items. “We cannot lose sight of the fact that there are families in our community whose lives have been shattered by the events of this past week.”The district’s 15 other campuses reopened Monday. 2053

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) — Santee voters this November will weigh in on two measures that deal with limits on serving as a City Council member or as Mayor.Measure Q and R each intend to address term limits on City Council and Mayoral positions in the city of Santee, however, they each take a different approach to limit how long someone can serve. The text of Measure Q reads as follows:City of Santee - Measure Q: "Shall the measure amending the Santee Municipal Code to require that no person shall serve as an 'Elected Official,' defined to include the offices of Mayor and Member of the City Council, for more than twelve years, or three terms, whichever is less, with any portion of term, whether by election or appointment, counting as a full term, be adopted?"Measure Q would not allow anyone to serve as either Mayor or a City Council member, or any combination of those positions, for more than 12 years, or three four-year terms, with any portion of a term counting as a full term. The competing measure, Measure R, reads as follows:City of Santee - Measure R: "Shall an ordinance amending the Santee Municipal Code to establish a three-term lifetime limit on City Council service and a separate two-term lifetime limit on Mayoral service, be adopted?"In other words, no one can serve as Mayor for more than two, four-year terms and, separately and in addition, as a City Council member for three, four-year terms, regardless of the district a person represented. For both term limits, a partial term of more than two years, whether held by election or appointment, would be counted as a full term. You can read the full text and arguments for Measure Q here. You can read the full text and arguments for Measure R here. 1732

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (CNS) - Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl was spotted dining outdoors at a restaurant in Santa Monica hours after voting to uphold a ban on outdoor dining due to a surge in COVID-19 cases, it was reported Monday.Kuehl had dinner at Il Forno Trattoria on Tuesday, soon after voting to uphold the county's new restrictions that were announced two days before, according to Fox11, which said it received multiple tips. During the board meeting, Kuehl called outdoor dining "a most dangerous situation."A representative for Kuehl told Fox11, "She did dine al fresco at Il Forno on the very last day it was permissible. She loves Il Forno, has been saddened to see it, like so many restaurants, suffer from a decline in revenue. She ate there, taking appropriate precautions, and sadly will not dine there again until our Public Health Orders permit."Kuehl was one of three board members voting to allow the ban to take effect as scheduled, while board members Kathryn Barger and Janice Hahn asked that outdoor dining be allowed to continue, arguing that the ban is too punitive to restaurants in response to a surge that has largely been blamed on private gatherings rather than outdoor dining."This is a serious health emergency and we must take it seriously," Kuehl said Tuesday, according to Fox11."The servers are not protected from us, and they're not protected from their other tables that they're serving at that particular time, plus all the hours in which they're working."The county Department of Public Health announced Nov. 22 that in- person dining would be halted at 10 p.m. Wednesday and continuing for three weeks. The move came in response to a surge that has now seen new daily COVID- 19 cases average more than 4,000 over the previous five days."Outdoor dining is probably more dangerous in terms of contagion than any other kind of business," Kuehl said earlier.Kuehl said diners at restaurants "sit for hours with no masks on" and are in close proximity to servers and patrons walking by. 2042
