SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Churches in San Diego are continuing to hold virtual services despite the President's order to open places of worship immediately. While some fight the constitutionality of the forced closures, others say they do not mind waiting for updated state and federal reopening guidelines. It's another Sunday service to an empty hall at Rock Church in Point Loma, but Senior Pastor Miles McPherson says he still reaches a broad audience online. "Ministry is happening," McPherson said. "We are having church every day. We're just not having service in this building."Friday, faith leaders rejoiced when President Trump deemed houses of worship "essential.""The Governors need to do the right thing and allow these very important essential places of faith to open right now, for this weekend. If they don't do it, I will override the Governors," the President addressed. But according to California's phased reopening plan, religious services fall under Phase 3. We are currently in Phase 2."We look forward to churches reopening in a safe and responsible manner," Governor Gavin Newsom said Friday. "And we have guidelines that we anticipated completing on Monday."The South Bay United Pentecostal Church in Chula Vista filed a lawsuit this month, fighting the Governor's stay-at-home-order, banning the opening of places of worship. But Friday, the Federal Appeals Court rejected their request. On Saturday, the church re-filed an emergency motion to the US Supreme Court to halt the Governor's ban. "California has been discriminating against churches in their reopen plan," South Bay United Pentecostal Church Senior Pastor, Arthur Hodges said. "We should not be in the last stage. We should be in the first stage."While the coronavirus pandemic has many groups tiptoeing around the idea of separation of church and state, McPherson says he is in no hurry to reopen physically. "How services are going to happen is going to depend on the regulations from the CDC, but we will adjust accordingly," McPherson said. "We are not bothered by whatever restrictions are put on us because you can't restrict people helping other people, and that's what our focus is going to be." 2194

Another Rikers Island correction officer has been attacked on the job by an inmate. The Department of Correction’s union says it’s the fourth such attack in just six weeks. The union is calling on city officials to make changes immediately to protect the officers. The 25-year-old officer is recovering from a broken nose and first- and third-degree burns after he was attacked during his shift on Saturday night, officials said.“One inmate sucker-punched him from the side and took the hot water and threw it on him,” said Elias Husamudeen, president of the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association.J’von Johnson, 21, is facing felony assault charges for his alleged role in the attack.“Outrageous attacks like this, on an officer just doing his job helping keep the rest of us safe, are exactly why this inmate was immediately placed into more restrictive custody,” said Peter Thorne, the DOC’s deputy commissioner of public information.Husamudeen said the attack wasn’t all that surprising.“For us, the writing is on the wall,” he said.Just five weeks ago, 39-year-old Jean Souffrant, also a Rikers correction officer, suffered a brutal attack at the hands of a group of inmates. He suffered a fractured spine and bleeding on the brain.Last Tuesday, a 24-year-old officer was assaulted on the job.The union also claims there was another incident last week.“A female correction officer, who was breaking up a fight, and she, too, had her jaw broken by inmates who were under 21 years old,” Husamudeen said. “We do not have the backing or protection of the mayor of the city of New York and even his administration, his commissioner. There’s not enough being done.”Now, the union is demanding action from the Department of Correction commissioner, city public advocate Letitia James and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.“This guy who assaulted this correction officer yesterday, he just assaulted another one last year,” Husamudeen said. “He’s coming out of one of these programs where they put inmates … that’s alternative to punitive segregation.”Husamadeen claims attacks on officers have increased since the de Blasio administration did away with punitive segregation for younger inmates, which means putting them in solitary confinement when they act up.But a spokesperson for the Department of Correction said assaults on staff resulting in serious injury have decreased 14 percent over the last three years. The union disputes that number and claims there is all talk and no action. CBS2 did not immediately receive a response from Mark-Viverito or James regarding their thoughts on the union’s demands. 2635

(CNN) -- "Saved by the Bell" may be coming back.Mario Lopez, who played the hunky AC Slater on the show, admits there have been talks about a reboot of the hit 90s American sitcom, but that obviously, the cast would be long gone from high school.Speaking at Fan EXPO Canada, Lopez reportedly explained the age issue."Obviously we couldn't be in high school still, so you'd have to be creative with the premise. But it's fun to think about. And who knows? You never say never," he said.Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who played the popular Zack Morris, added: "There's talks, there's always talks. I just heard recently there's talks.""We know about it. All three of us know about it, this person that's going to tackle it," he added.Elizabeth Berkley, who played Jessie Spano on the series, said if there was a reunion, it "has to be right."Lopez added that while everyone is up for it, no storyline has been finalized."Not yet," he said.In April, Lopez, Gosselaar and Berkley celebrated the show's 30th anniversary with a cast dinner along with co-stars Tiffani Thiessen, who played everyone's dream girl Kelly Kapowski, and actor Dennis Haskins, who played Principal Richard Belding. 1184
