SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Holiday Bowl officials said Thursday that its 43rd annual football game will not be played this year.Due to the pandemic, the bowl's Board of Directors voted unanimously to cancel the December game, which has been played since 1978. The bowl’s traditional Bowl Week events had already been canceled for this year, including the Holiday Bowl Parade.Holiday Bowl CEO Mark Neville said that in addition to challenges in holding the game safely for fans, the virus had, "created a situation in that we wouldn’t be able to welcome fans, ultimately resulting in no tourism. Couple that with the financial and potential health risks of trying to play the game during this pandemic and it was clear this was the right decision for us.""This has been the most difficult decision our Board has ever had to make since our bowl game started in 1978," said Neville. "While it’s not the decision we wanted to make, it’s the right decision for our non-profit association and the community for the long term."The game has brought in an average million in economic benefit and led to more than 28,000 hotel room nights annually for the region, the board said. December is typically San Diego's slowest tourism period."People come in, either stay here, or they come to the restaurants, they enjoy a cocktail or a bite to eat, whether it be lunch or dinner," said Chuck Abbott, general manager of the Intercontinental, which overlooks the Holiday Bowl Parade along the waterfront. "Obviously it increaeses the revenue for the hotel, which is fantastic."The 2020 Holiday Bowl was supposed to be the first of a new six-year cycle to match top teams in the PAC-12 and ACC. The game is expected to return in 2021, according to 2020 Bowl Association President Dan Moore."We are fortunate to have a strong relationship with our title sponsor SDCCU, FOX Sports, the ACC, the Pac-12 and many others. While we all share the disappointment with the decision, each has been understanding and very supportive," Moore said.It is uncertain, however, where the game will be played. SDCCU Stadium is being torn down, and it is unclear if a football field could fit inside Petco Park."I'd love Petco because I own several restaurants right around there," said Todd Brown, who owns Bub's downtown. "It's a beautiful facility, you've got all the hotels and everything down there, and if they can figure it out logistically to put a field in there, it'd be a great spot."A bowl spokesman said Friday it was too soon to discuss venues for 2021, but said the game would not be moving to Dignity Health Center in Carson, where the Chargers played from 2016 to 20`19, and where San Diego State will host its games this season. 2715

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Home sales in San Diego are starting to see a dramatic decrease, according to a new report by CoreLogic.Year-to-year, home sales fell nearly 18 percent from September of 2017 to September of 2018. From August to September of this year, home sales fell nearly 22 percent. Since 1988, the average change in sales between August and September is only 9.8 percent.“The nearly 18 percent year-over-year drop in Southern California home sales this September was the largest for any month in almost eight years,” said Andrew LePage, a CoreLogic analyst.Also in September, sales of newly-built homes in Southern California were 46.6 percent below the September average since 1988.The drop in home sales is due to higher prices and rising mortgage rates, according to CoreLogic. Those factors are pricing out some would-be buyers and prompting others to wait and see what happens with the housing market.The median home price in San Diego County in September of 2018 was 5,000, up nearly eight percent from the same time last year, however, the median price fell by 1.4 percent from August to September of 2018.“Price growth is moderating amid slower sales and more listings in many markets,” LePage said. “This is welcome news for potential homebuyers, but many still face a daunting hurdle – the monthly mortgage payment, which has been pushed up sharply by rising mortgage rates.” 1405

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Homicide investigators have been assigned to look into a deadly fire in Logan Heights that claimed three lives. According to the San Diego Police Department, the investigators have been assigned “out of an abundance of caution.”Investigators will work closely with the metro arson strike team also looking into the incident, the department says. The fire started at a home on the 3100 block of Clay Street around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. 44-year-old Jose Romero died at the scene while his wife and daughter, 46-year-old Nicolasa Maya-Romero and 21-year-old Iris Romero died at the hospital in the days following the blaze. The family’s 23-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son remain in the hospital. The family’s oldest son, a 26-year-old, was unharmed in the fire. The 26-year-old said he awoke Sunday morning to find his bed on fire. The man told 10News he tried yelling at his family to get out of the home."My dogs were jumping on me, trying to wake me up. I woke up. When I woke up, my bed was on fire. I jumped out of bed and started screaming the house is on fire," said Wilber Romero.According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, firefighters had to go inside the home to pull many of the victims out.A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses. Or if you've chosen to support the Chargers, StubHub Center?A newly published analysis by ESPN's Outside the Lines investigated thousands of food-safety inspection reports from health departments that monitor professional sports venues across the U.S.The analysis looks at routine inspection reports from 2016 to 2017.According to ESPN, about 28 percent of the venues registered high-level violation in half or more of their food service outlets. The violations cover temperature, pests or bugs, poor condition of food, equipment failures, employee-related issues, and more.The study's worst is in Charlotte, N.C., where Spectrum Center — home of the NBA's Charlotte Hornets — posted a 92 percent violation rate, followed by Michigan's now-closed Palace of Auburn Hills (86.11 percent), and Texas' American Airlines Center (83.08 percent.)The highest rated stadium was Oakland's Oracle Arena — home of the NBA's Golden State Warriors— with a 1.12 percent violation rate.Petco ParkSan Diego's downtown ballpark ranked fifth among MLB venues and 24th among all venues analyzed by ESPN.Of the park's 168 outlets inspected, 28 recorded high-level violations, according to ESPN's study. The study found the park registered on average 0.09 high-level violations per inspections.Some of those violations, for example, including pest-related issues— two of which occurred in 2016 inspections. On Aug. 18, 2016, an inspector found bird droppings on top of an ice bin and on Sept. 20, 2016, rodent droppings were discovered on the floor and top of a concession stand's ice machine. That ice machine was taken out of service for the rest of the season, according to the study.The San Diego Padres told 10News they are "confident that our ballpark will continue to be one of the safest" in baseball:“We strive for excellence with our food and beverage service at Petco Park. We are confident that our ballpark will continue to be one of the safest in all of baseball, as evidenced by ESPN’s published rankings today," the statement read.StubHub CenterThe home of the Los Angeles Chargers came in seventh in the NFL and 22 among all venues in ESPN's study.Of the venue's 39 outlets inspected, 6 recorded high-level violations, the study says, and 0.06 violations per inspection, on average.Some of the violations recorded included employees not properly wearing hair restraints on July 15, 2017, and food not properly protected from contamination on April 29, 2017, the study says.In a statement to 10News from Levy, hospitality partner at StubHub Center, the company noted their violations compare "highly favorably" to the average number of violations at any restaurant:“We welcome the local Los Angeles County health department and employ third-party sanitation experts to ensure a safe environment for our guests.
