Read the letter from now-suspended Cincinnati Reds broadcaster Thom Brennaman apologizing for using a homophobic slur on-air Wednesday evening. As many of you know, I said something hateful on the air Wednesday night, something no one should ever say. Something that someone should ever think.Something that no one should ever feel.Something no one should ever hear.I could try to explain it or tell you about who I am and what I believe, but those things would all be excuses. The simple fact is, what I said was wrong.I used a word that is both offensive and insulting. In the last 24 hours, I have read about its history; I had no idea it was so rooted in hate and violence and am particularly ashamed that I, someone who makes his living by the use of words, could be so careless and insensitive. It’s a word that should have no place in my vocabulary and I will certainly never utter it again.I cannot erase what I have done. The only thing I can do is humbly apologize, accept the consequences of my actions, and resolve to be better and behave differently from now on.To the LGBTQ+ community – I am truly and deeply sorry. You should never be denigrated with crude and hateful language. I failed you and I cannot say enough how sorry I am.To the Cincinnati Reds and all Reds fans – You deserve better from me. I let you down and will work in whatever way I can to show that I am capable of learning from my mistakes and setting an example of which everyone associated with the Reds – management, staff, players, former players, and fans – can be proud. To Major League Baseball – Diversity is a strength of our game, and derogatory language has no place in the booth, on the field, or anywhere else for that matter. I am sorry for the shame I brought upon the game that has been so good to my family and me for nearly 50 years.I have spoken at length with Billy Bean, Vice President, and Special Assistant to the Commissioner of Baseball and an openly gay man, and Evan Millward, WCPO anchorman, who have been generous with their time and patience to help me understand the impact of my actions and provided me with resources to educate myself and work to become a more informed person. With their help, I am going to start improving my understanding of LGBTQ+ issues and not in a way to simply check a box to keep my job but to sincerely have an impact and change. I immediately plan to participate in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training and have reached out to PFLAG for resources and guidance.Regardless of what my future holds in broadcasting, my actions have forced me to reflect on who I am and how I want to be seen and thought of. I realize it is more important than ever for us to treat each other with dignity and respect. I need to be better and I must set a better example. I hope the LGBTQ+ community, the Reds and their fans, and the people of Cincinnati can find a way to think better of me. With all the humility I can muster, I ask for your forgiveness. This story was first reported by Thom Brennaman at WCPO in Cincinnati, Ohio. 3065

Residents along the coast of New Jersey, New York and parts of New England were placed under a tropical storm watch Sunday as Hurricane Jose inches it way closer to the United States mainland. Meanwhile, a hurricane watch was issued for the US Virgin Islands as Maria became a hurricane Sunday evening. Hurricane Jose packed top sustained winds of 90 MPH as of early Sunday evening. The center of the storm is expected to stay over the Atlantic Ocean, but the storm's backside could scrape parts of the Northeast. The threat of wind, rain and deadly rip currents prompted the National Hurricane Center to place parts of the Northeast under a tropical storm watch. The potential for danger is even greater in the Caribbean. The US Virgin Islands, which took a devastating hit from Hurricane Irma, is under a hurricane watch ahead of Hurricane Maria. Maria packed top winds of 75 MPH as of early Sunday evening. The hurricane is expected to strengthen into a Category 3 storm by Tuesday. After passing near the Virgin Islands, Irma could make a direct impact on Puerto Rico.  1111

President Donald Trump signed a 0 billion stimulus bill on Sunday, with some of those funds going toward direct payments for millions of Americans. While the bill has been signed into law, there are still a number of unknowns about the bill. Here is what is known:- Congress has authorized that most Americans making less than ,000 a year will get a direct payment of 0 (couples making less than 0,000 a year will get ,200). Heads of households making 4,500 annually also will receive the full 0.- Those making ,000 to ,000 (0,000 to 4,000 for couples) will get a prorated check. Those making over ,000 (4,000 for couples) will not receive a check.- Once again, young adults considered dependents of their parents are not eligible for the payments.- The amount given per child under the age of 17 will increase from 0 to 0.- Americans will receive the second round of stimulus checks the same way they received the first one.- While most Americans who received a stimulus check in the spring will receive one, changes to income between 2018 and 2019 could alter payments. What is unknown:- Will Congress authorize an increase of the direct payments from 0 to ,000. Trump called on an increase to direct payments, which got support from the House on Monday, mostly due to strong Democratic support. Now the bill goes to the Senate, but it is unknown if the bill will even get a vote there.- When a check will be distributed. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says that checks could be distributed within a week, but with Congress considering an increase to the amount per check, that could delay things. Why would I qualify for a check in the spring, but not now? This would mostly be due to a change in income. The IRS went by income from the most recent tax return that had been submitted by the spring. The filing deadline for 2019 taxes was July 15. For many Americans, the IRS used 2018 return information. If someone saw their income increase from 2018 to 2019, that information would now be in the IRS’ hands.Conversely, if your income dropped in 2019 compared to 2018, that might make you eligible for a check this time around.Undocumented immigrants still will not receive a check, but their spouses mayDuring the last round of stimulus checks, many families did not receive a check if an undocumented immigrant is in the family. Now, the spouses and children of undocumented immigrants can now receive a check (assuming they meet qualifications), and also retroactively earn a check from the last round of stimulus. When will we know if I will get 0 or ,000That will be decided in the coming days. The Senate is scheduled to meet on Tuesday. Theoretically, the Senate could approve the House’s bill on Tuesday, and Trump could sign later in the day.Regardless, a new Congress is sworn in on Sunday, and the Senate has until then to consider the legislation passed by the House on Monday. 2953

President Donald Trump spent Thursday grappling with how to prevent more school massacres and address the gun debate gripping the country, offering solutions such as giving bonuses to teachers who undergo gun training."These people are cowards. They're not going to walk into a school if 20% of the teachers have guns -- it may be 10% or may be 40%. And what I'd recommend doing is the people that do carry, we give them a bonus. We give them a little bit of a bonus," Trump said. "They'll frankly feel more comfortable having the gun anyway. But you give them a little bit of a bonus."He repeated his suggestion that some teachers get trained to handle firearms as a deterrent to shooters and disparaged "gun-free zones.""I don't want teachers to have guns. I want certain highly adept people -- people that understand weaponry, guns. If they really have that aptitude -- because not everybody has aptitude for gun -- but if they have the aptitude, I think a concealed permit for having teachers and letting people know that there are people in the building with guns, you won't have -- in my opinion -- you won't have these shootings," the President said.Gun-free zones, meanwhile, are appealing to criminals, he said."We have to harden those schools, not soften them. A gun-free zone, to a killer, or somebody that wants to be a killer, that's like going in for the ice cream. That's like saying, 'Here I am, take me,' " Trump said at the White House."They see that as such a beautiful target," Trump said. "They live for gun-free zones."He also disparaged school shooting drills, saying they were tough on the kids."Active shooter drills is a very negative thing, I'll be honest with you," he said. "I think that's a very negative thing to be talking about. I don't like it. I don't want to tell my son 'you're going to have to participate in an active shooter drill. I'd much rather have a hardened school."Trump also promoted the idea of increasing the age limit of those who can purchase semi-automatic rifles from age 18 to age 21 as well as looking at the possibility of committing people like the Florida shooter to mental institutions."I said this yesterday when we had a mental institution where you take a sicko like this guy -- he was a sick guy, so many signs -- and you bring him to a mental health institution, those institutions are largely closed because communities didn't want him," Trump said. The President also blamed violence in video games and movies as partly responsible for shaping young people's thoughts."They're so violent," Trump said.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. President-elect Joe Biden formally introduced his picks for several high-ranking administration positions on Friday. Among them was former Obama-era UN ambassador Susan Rice to lead the White House Domestic Policy Council.Biden and vice president-elect Kamala Harris introduced the latest round of cabinet nominees in a press conference at Biden's transition headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware.Rice served as President Barack Obama's U.N. ambassador during his first term, from 2009 to 2013. She later served as Obama's national security adviser in his second term, from 2013 to 2017.Rice is the type of experienced bureaucrat that Biden has been eyeing for a Cabinet-level position, but she also comes with some political baggage, considering her involvement in handling the aftermath of the Benghazi attacks in Libya in 2012. With, at most, a razor-thin majority in the Senate, Biden has opted to grant Rice a position that does not require confirmation.Biden also introduced Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio, as his pick to run the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Fudge has served in Congress for five terms, representing the Cleveland area.On Friday, Biden also introduced Denis McDonough as his pick to run Veterans Affairs, Katherine Tai as his pick for U.S. Trade Representative and Tom Vilsack as Agriculture Secretary. 1349
