SHANGHAI, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Shanghai municipal government Monday launched the microblog "Shanghai City" on China's popular Twitter-like microblogging service Weibo.com.The microblog, officially verified as originating from the Information Office of Shanghai Municipal Government (IOSMG), has accumulated more than 30,000 followers in the five hours since its launch.According to IOSMG, the content of the postings will be mainly about new policies and regulations, practical information related to activities in Shanghai, and interactions with Internet users over issues of public concern.Vegetable prices, the selection of affordable housing, and upcoming cultural activities in Shanghai are included in the first several postings.Some 600 government agencies and 300 government officials of various levels in Shanghai have verified Weibo accounts, the IOSMG said.The "Shanghai Metro," the official microblog of the city's metro operator with over 1.15 million followers, is considered one of most influential government microblogs in China.The latest statistics show that China now has more than 300 million registered microblog users. This is the message the Fiji Cancer Society is sending out this October, which is breast cancer awareness month, worldwide.Fiji Cancer Society Chairperson and breast cancer awareness month President Nirmala Nambiar said, "Fiji continues to have a high incidence of breast cancer deaths with large number of tumors presented to health professionals at a late stage due to the stigma of having the disease."In the first quarter of 2011, there were 46 new breast cancer cases recorded, whilst there were 33 new cases in the same period last year."The figures could be scary but one must understand that as the awareness increases in our communities the number of cases recorded increases," she warned.Men and women should be aware that age, obesity and family history are all factors that contribute to the risk of developing the disease.This October the Fiji Cancer Society has planned a number of events all targeted to raise awareness since the lack of information and education is dangerous.Nambiar said through partnership with the Ministry of Health, Oxfam Clinic in Suva and the Fiji Nurses Association, supported by the sponsorship of Colgate Palmolive, the focus this year is on reaching out to the rural community and making a difference to the lives of the poor and unprivileged."We have free checkups planned for the month at the major villages from Vunidawa, Korovou and Valelevu to Lami at the other end and hope that we will be able to support the women in this area who may not be able to have a check- up otherwise.According to the official, the society's western branch continues to arrange free check- ups with the support of the Patan Clinic.The awareness and free checkups have also been arranged for corporate organizations at their request and if we are not able to provide all this during October we will continue to schedule them for the following month.The Society's thanks go to Suva Private Hospital for offering half price mammograms for the month of October, Nambiar said, adding a common issue with Fiji women, according to doctors at the hospital, was the return rate."Once they hear the news that they have cancer, many women don' t return because of the fear of what's next. BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- China on Saturday again called for appropriately addressing the alleged plot to assassinate the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to the United States.Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Weimin made the remarks in a written statement in Beijing.The UN General Assembly on Friday adopted a resolution titled "Terrorist Attacks on Internationally Protected Persons," expressing deep concern over the assassination plot and calling on Iran "to comply with all of its obligations under international law."Liu said China abstained from the vote on the resolution, because the case is highly complicated and sensitive at present and relevant parties still have different views on the issue.He said any conclusion or action must be based on comprehensive, impartial, objective and transparent investigation and substantial evidence."Before facts are checked out, parties should adopt a prudent attitude, refrain from jumping to conclusions, and avoid actions that may complicate and worsen the situation," he said.He said China hopes those countries concerned will continue to appropriately address the issue through dialogue and make joint efforts to maintain peace and stability in the Middle East and the Gulf Region.Liu also reaffirmed that China opposes all forms of terrorism, and always stands for compliance with international law and the basic norms governing international relations in handling state-to-state relations as well as the effective protection of the safety of diplomatic personnel.Chinese Permanent Representative to the United Nations Li Baodong previously addressed the UN General Assembly on Friday in order to explain China's position on the issue after he abstained from voting on the draft resolution.

BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Friday that it will start an investigation into the U.S. government's policy support and subsidies for its renewable energy sector over trade barrier concerns.The MOC will look into six renewable energy programs concerning wind, solar and hydroelectric energy in the states of Washington, Massachusetts, Ohio, New Jersey and California, the MOC said in a statement posted on its website.The investigation was applied for by the China Chamber of Commerce for Imports and Exports of Machinery and Electronic Products, as well as the new energy chamber of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce."The applicants argued that the U.S. government's policy support and subsidies for its renewable energy industry constitute a trade barrier, as they violate the rules of the World Trade Organization and have hindered and restricted the development of China's renewable energy sector," the statement said.The applicants requested the elimination of any negative influence from the U.S. government's policy support and subsidies in order to maintain a fair trade environment, according to the statement.The investigation will end before May 25, 2012, although it may be extended to August 25, 2012 under special circumstances, according to the statement.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday revoked its approval of Avastin for treating the breast cancer after concluding that the drug has not been shown to be safe and effective for that use.Avastin will still remain on the market as an approved treatment for certain types of colon, lung, kidney and brain cancer."After reviewing the available studies it is clear that women who take Avastin for metastatic breast cancer risk potentially life-threatening side effects without proof that the use of Avastin will provide a benefit, in terms of delay in tumor growth, that would justify those risks," FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said in a statement. "Nor is there evidence that use of Avastin will either help them live longer or improve their quality of life. "Avastin's risks include severe high blood pressure; bleeding and hemorrhaging; heart attack or heart failure; and the development of perforations in different parts of the body such as the nose, stomach, and intestines.Avastin was approved for metastatic breast cancer in February 2008 under the FDA's accelerated approval program, which allows a drug to be approved based on data that are not sufficiently complete to permit full approval. After the approval, the drug's sponsor, Genentech, completed two additional clinical trials and submitted the data from those studies to the FDA. These data showed only a small effect on tumor growth without evidence that patients lived any longer or had a better quality of life compared to taking standard chemotherapy alone -- not enough to outweigh the risk of taking the drug.FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, which is responsible for the approval of this drug, ultimately concluded that the results of these additional studies did not justify continued approval and notified Genentech it was proposing to withdraw approval of the indication.Genentech did not agree with the Center's evaluation of the data and, following the procedures set out in FDA regulations, requested a hearing on the Center's withdrawal proposal, with a decision to be made by the Commissioner. That two-day hearing, which took place June 28-29, included recommendations from the FDA 's Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee, voting 6-0 in favor of withdrawing approval of Avastin's breast cancer indication.
