Kevin Spacey made the set of Netflix's "House of Cards" into a "toxic" work environment through a pattern of sexual harassment, eight people who currently work on the show or worked on it in the past tell CNN. "He was a man in a very powerful position on the show and I was someone very low on the totem pole and on the food chain there."The production assistant asked that what happened next in the car not be described, for fear that it would identify him.Once they had arrived on set, the production assistant says he helped the actor take his belongings from the car to Spacey's trailer on set. While the two men were in the trailer, the production assistant says, Spacey cornered him, blocked his exit and made inappropriate contact with him."I told him, 'I don't think I'm ok with this, I don't think I'm comfortable with this,'" the production assistant said. That's when the actor became "visibly flustered," fled the trailer, got in his car and left for the remainder of the day, according to the production assistant.The production assistant did not report the incident to any managers of the series or the police, but he did tell a coworker at the time. CNN has spoken to the coworker to corroborate the production assistant's story.The alleged sexual assault came months after the production assistant had, he told CNN, complained to a supervisor that Spacey was sexually harassing him. The supervisor's solution was to never let the production assistant be alone with Spacey while they were on set, the production assistant says.The assistant said the harassment then stopped for long enough for him to feel comfortable driving with Spacey to the set."I have no doubt that this type of predatory behavior was routine for him and that my experience was one of many and that Kevin had few if any qualms about exploiting his status and position," he said. "It was a toxic environment for young men who had to interact with him at all in the crew, cast, background actors."The other people who worked on "House of Cards" with whom CNN spoke all supported the idea that the set could be toxic for young men because of Spacey.A crew member who worked on the show for all six seasons said that Spacey routinely harassed and touched him."He would put his hands on me in weird ways," the crew member said. "He would come in and massage my shoulders from behind or put his hands around me or touch my stomach sometimes in weird ways that in normal everyday conversation would not be appropriate."This crew member said he did not "feel comfortable" telling Spacey to stop. "That's the worst part about this whole thing. I would love to be able to speak out about this kind of stuff and not fear."CNN spoke to a close friend of the crew member, who says that the crew member had told him about Spacey's behavior over the course of the six seasons of the show that it happened.When asked on Thursday about the new allegations, Netflix said in a statement to CNN that they sent a representative to the "House of Cards" set on Monday."Netflix was just made aware of one incident, five years ago, that we were informed was resolved swiftly," the statement said. "On Tuesday, in collaboration with MRC, we suspended production, knowing that Kevin Spacey wasn't scheduled to work until Wednesday. Netflix is not aware of any other incidents involving Kevin Spacey on-set. We continue to collaborate with MRC and other production partners to maintain a safe and respectful working environment. "As the producer of the show, creating and maintaining a safe working environment for our cast and crew has always been our top priority. Irving got out soon after, after loading up a truck bed full of belongings. He took a photo showing his property, as it began burning."My house was there and then it turned orange. Then it was a yellow ball just slightly bigger than a house. I didn’t have the heart to look back, so I just drove away," said Irving.But there was no escaping the charred reality when the couple returned. Their home of 20 years, along with two vehicles, were destroyed by the fire."Defeated. You look at it and go, 'Where do we start?'" asked Anita.They’ve just started the cleanup process, expected to take months. At the start of the pandemic, nine months ago, most experts were optimistic and agreed that the U.S. had a strong shot at seeing a fast V-shaped recovery.“We can turn this around this year. I still think there’s real hope for that,” Todd McCracken, with the Small Business Association, said in March.Even with some required government shutdowns, most experts believed the U.S. would most likely see a U-shaped recovery. That means things would pick up a little slower, but it would still be considered a relatively fast rebound.“There was also the L, which meant we were going to go down to the bottom and no one knew where we were going to go, and then there was the W, which meant we were going to go down and then we were going to come up, and actually, that is pretty much what is happening,” said Jonathan Drapkin, president and CEO of the Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress.Drapkin pointed out the other and more dreaded “W” or “L” scenarios experts feared back in March appear to be more in line with what the U.S. is actually experiencing now.“It’s definitely more of an L, said Elise Gould, an economist with the Economic Policy Institute.“Personally, I think any hope for a quick recovery has gone by the wayside. Over the last few months, we have actually seen the recovery slow. So, last month, we saw that we had a gain of 245,000 jobs, much lower than a month before that, lower than a month before that. And so, at this rate, we could be years away from a full recovery.”According to Bankrate senior economist Mark Hamrick, we could also be seeing both a swift recovery and a worsening one, simultaneously.“My sense for many months now has been that this has been a so-called K-shape recovery,” said Hamrick. “Why do we call it a K? KENOSHA, Wis. — A Kenosha County Court Commissioner ruled there is enough evidence for Kyle Rittenhouse to stand trial for homicide charges. A preliminary hearing was held this morning in Kenosha. Rittenhouse appeared virtually from his lawyers office in Racine.Rittenhouse and his mother were dropped off in front of Mark Richards’ office. Rittenhouse is free on a million bail. Rittenhouse didn’t say anything as he walked inside.His mother said, “ Get away from me.”During the hearing, Rittenhouse sat quietly with a mask. He lowered it so his lawyer could identify him to the court.“I will stipulate my client is seated in the blue shirt, he just pulled his mask down,” said Richards.The defense first asked for two of the charges in the case to be dismissed, reckless endangering safety and possession of a dangerous weapon by a minor. The defense argued the possession of a weapon charge, in part, was a violation of Rittenhouse’s 2nd amendment rights. The prosecution disagreed.“This is a situation where a teenager went running around the streets of Kenosha with a very dangerous weapon. And this is exactly why we have this law because a teenager, in this case, killed two people and shot a third because teenagers shouldn’t be allowed to run around with dangerous weapons because bad things happen,” said Thomas Binger, Kenosha County Assistant District Attorney.The court rejected the motion to dismiss the two charges. It also ruled on whether there was enough evidence to more Rittenhouse’s case to a trial.Prosecutors laid out parts of their case, calling a Kenosha Police Detective Benjamin Antaramian to testify about what happened the night of Aug. 25.“An investigation later determined Joseph Rosenbaum was shot in the parking lot later to be determined to be deceased and then Kyle Rittenhouse was the shooter on that scene he fled that incident,” said Antaramian.The detective testified Rittenhouse went on to shot and kill Anthony Huber and seriously wound Gaige Grosskreutz. The defense then cross-examined the detective, showing still photos from the night of the shooting.“Mr. Grosskreutz, in his right hand, you can clearly see a firearm, correct?” Ssked Richards.“Yes sir,” answered Antaramian.“He is pointing it at my client correct,” said Richards.“It appears so,” said Antaramian.But the prosecutor said a self-defense argument for a jury to decide, not a preliminary hearing.“All this court needs to find was that a felony was committed and probably committed with this defendant,” said Thomas Binger, the assistant district attorney of Kenosha County.The court agreed.
