Those looking to get out of their homes Labor Day weekend appear to be favoring remote locations, according to travel site Airbnb.Of homes and living spaces booked on the site for Labor Day Weekend, 30 percent are in remote and out-of-the-way places, Airbnb said in a recent report. This is almost double the percentage of remote bookings over the holiday weekend in 2019.The most popular getaway locations in the US over the holiday weekend are ones with water access or traditional fall foliage; including Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Big Bear Lake, California, Wilmington, North Carolina, Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Orange Beach, Alabama.After a slow summer travel season, with road trips and flights down year-over-year, AAA is reporting many will be heading out of town over the Labor Day Weekend. Although the number of travelers will be down compared to previous years, low gas prices and last-minute trips will put many of them on the roads.Once Labor Day Weekend is over, Airbnb is reporting guests are looking to stay longer. Many are looking for months-long stays into the fall, as work and schools remain closed with the coronavirus pandemic."There's this really new trend where traveling and living are starting to blur together," the company's CEO, Brian Chesky, told CNN Business' Richard Quest. There is nothing like the sound of a baby's cry and for a new mom like Whitney Eberhardt, it can be daunting.“When you first come home from the hospital you have no idea what you are doing and when they are crying you sometimes have no idea why. So, it’s nice to have something to help you out,” said Eberhardt.On average, doctors say a newborn can cry a total of 2 hours a day, and that’s why Dr. Ariana Anderson of UCLA created the app, Chatter Baby.“I thought it would be good to make a device that would help new parents and possibly deaf parents. So, when they were around their baby crying and said, why is my baby crying they would have some sort of answer,” said Dr. Anderson.Chatter Baby is in its infancy stage and currently only gives three reasons for your baby crying. The three reasons are when a baby's in pain, fussy or hungry.Eberhardt tried out the app and said it is easy to use. You press record for five seconds as your baby is crying and the app will then compare the cry to the sounds in a database to determine a reason. The Chatter Baby database of cries was created with the help of new parents.“We think the best judges of the baby are parents themselves. We had the parent initially label the cry. So a mother would say, my baby is hungry, so if two other mothers agreed with that description of the babies cry then we would include that cry in our data base,” said Dr. Anderson.Certain cries have a different acoustic sound. For example, babies who are in pain might have a cry with high energy or a fussy cry may have more periods of silence.“Once we had an agreement amongst the mothers we trained artificial intelligence algorithms to look for patterns in the cry that were specific to hunger to pain to fussiness,” said Dr. Anderson.With the help of artificial intelligence, Chatter Baby’s algorithm claims 90% accuracy whether your baby is crying or not and correctly flags more than 90% of pain cries.However, as you get more comfortable knowing why your baby is crying, you can tweak the app yourself to make it more accurate.“We want to have a way for parents to revise, update and improve the algorithym.so the algorithm gets returned to their specific baby,” said Dr. Anderson.Eberhardt said the app is a great safety net for all new parents.  2315

Tofu, the red panda — a recent addition at?Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium — died Tuesday, according to a press release from the zoo today.The preliminary pathology report indicated that the 3-year-old red panda, which arrived in Omaha from the Detroit Zoo in October 2017 and joined the new Asian Highlands exhibit in May, likely died of a condition that is known to afflict the species, according to the release.Tofo had excess fluid in her abdomen and chest cavity, "a finding that is most commonly observed in cases of heart failure or cardiomyopathy... (which) are population-wide health issues within the red panda species," the release states.The red panda could have also died of inflammation of the heart from bacterial or viral causes, the release states.According to the release, the Omaha zoo "intends to collaborate with other pathologists and scientists regarding their findings in hopes to better understand these health issues."The zoo still exhibits two red pandas: one female and one male, the release states. 1054

This is a story about a state trooper, a collision and a lie.It begins at a parking lot in Michigan.  While on duty last May, Trooper Kevin Klomparens had pulled into a Chipotle restaurant in his Michigan State Police vehicle.  He was backing into a parking space when his SUV backed into a parked car.The damage caused was minimal: scratches and a small dent that totaled a few hundred dollars in damage. But Trooper Klomparens didn’t notify the car’s owner, leave a note or report the accident. Instead, he pulled out of the space and left.The driver of the damaged car turned out to be a 20-year-old college student who worked at a Southfield restaurant. She didn’t feel comfortable talking to Detroit-based WXYZ on-camera for this story, but said off-camera that she learned about the accident from two people who witnessed it. They told her, and then police.According to police records, the two witnesses said they heard “a loud crunch” and saw the trooper “commit a hit and run.”  Dispatch notified nearby officers that one of their own had been involved in an accident.  Klomparens heard the message on his police radio, and that’s when he turned his small problem into a much bigger one.Klomparens: I just got sideswiped by a car, I’m at 8 and Lahser.  He flipped and headed back east on Westbound 8 Mile, I’m trying to catch up.  I’m not entirely sure what kind of car it is, a grey sedan.Dispatch: And he’s now Eastbound or Westbound on 8?Klomparens: Eastbound. He hit a turnaround, I’m stopped at a traffic light when he hit my backend.Klomparens said he was the victim of a crime and said he was in a police chase with the person responsible.Dispatch: Did you get a plate?Klomparens: Negative on a plate, he turned behind me, there was a Michigan u-turn behind me. He turned back and sped off eastbound.In truth, there was no chase.  No sideswipe.  Klomparens made it all up.“Unbelievable that this officer would respond in that manner,” said Willie Bell, who spent 32 years as a Detroit Police Officer. “You’re violating the confidence that people have in police officers in general.”Today, Bell serves on the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners.“It’s a simple accident, but now it lays to totally lack of confidence, not just in this officer, but police officers in general,” Bell said.After the accident, MSP investigated and Trooper Klomparens admitted to making the story up.  The case was forwarded to Attorney General Bill Schuette’s office for possible prosecution. His office declined to charge the trooper with anything, writing in part that while “(w)e are certainly not condoning the actions of the trooper,” “there are better ways to handle this particular incident.”WXYZ asked to speak with Attorney General Schuette on camera to understand why he chose not to bring charges. His office declined. “The average citizen easily would have been charged in this case,” said Michael L. Steinberg, a criminal defense attorney who’s represented men and women accused of hit and run accidents. “Providing false information to a police officer is usually going to get the attention of the prosecuting attorney’s office,” he said. “A police officer doesn’t get special status as far as the law goes.”Klomparens won’t face charges, but he could still face discipline. He is still working at MSP today while internal affairs continues to investigate, more than five months since the accident happened.
