BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's drug watchdog has launched a campaign to expose and crack down on illegal spread and selling of drugs on the Internet."Food and drug administration departments at all levels should explore effective methods to stop the sale of fake or inferior-quality drugs, especially those advertised and sold on the Internet," said Shao Mingli, head of the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), Tuesday at a meeting.According to SFDA's monitoring on six major search engines including Google and Yahoo, after typing the key words of "medicine" plus a type of common disease, such as "diabetes" or "high blood pressure," 10 to 30 percent of search results contained illegal drug-related information.Figures show that, among 196 web pages being monitored, 96 percent did not have or failed to show certificates for drug-related trades or other services. Some 39 percent have no Internet Content Provider (ICP) records in the database of telecommunication management departments.ICP is a permit to run web sites in China.According to the SFDA, these illegal sites usually advertise or sell drug products in the name of large hospitals or research institutes. Some even forged pages of the SFDA drug database to fool buyers that their drugs had been approved by the administration.The campaign is part of a nationwide crackdown on the violation of intellectual property rights and the production and distribution of fake and shoddy products, which began earlier this month.

TAIPEI, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Procedures of cross-Strait talks had become more "simplified" and the results "more tangible" after five talks over the last two-and-half years, said chairman of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) Friday in Taipei.Chiang Pin-kung told a press conference that the Chinese mainland and Taiwan were expected to sign a medical and health cooperation agreement at the upcoming talks between the SEF and the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), scheduled Tuesday.Regarding a cross-Strait investment protection agreement, he said the two sides had "reached a preliminary consensus" on it, but still needed time to further exchange views since it was "complicated" and "concerned a wide range of issues."The investment protection agreement is an important part of the follow-up negotiations after the cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) took effect in September.Chiang said the SEF and the ARATS would "continue to discuss" it in order to reach a deal as soon as possible, as "it is related to people's interests."The talks will be the sixth round since the two organizations, authorized by the mainland and Taiwan to handle cross-Strait affairs, resumed negotiations in June 2008 after an 11-year suspension.About 560 reporters, including more than 400 from Taiwan, 60 from the mainland, as well as those from Hong Kong, Macao and foreign countries, will cover the event.Chiang said a mainland delegation, led by the ARATS executive vice president Zheng Lizhong, was scheduled to arrive in Taipei on Sunday and would hold a preparatory negotiation with SEF vice chairman and secretary general Kao Koong-lian, to decide the agenda of the talks.ARATS president Chen Yunlin and his wife are expected to arrive in Taipei Monday morning. BEIJING, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- China vowed Wednesday that it would continue efforts to expand and upgrade its rural power grid networks in the next five years to meet the increasing demand.Safe, environmentally-friendly, and technologically-advanced rural power networks are expected to cover most of the nation's rural areas to ensure better electricity use for rural residents during the country's 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), according to a statement issued after a State Council executive meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.Full-fledged power networks are still beyond reach for some rural residents in China's central and western rural regions, despite government moves to expand rural networks beginning in 1998, the statement said.Relevant departments should step up efforts to improve power generation facilities for irrigation and farm produce processing to ensure power consumption of agriculture production, the statement said.Further, participants at the meeting also pledged to slash rural power prices.

SUZHOU, Jiangsu, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) has announced that the special campaign to crackdown on prostitution has been effective, with cases of prostitution and obscene performances in entertainment venues in October dropping 18.4 percent on a month-on month basis.The campaign in the latter half of the year attached increased importance to the investigation and punishment of the organizers of prostitution.The campaign also targeted business operators and the "protective umbrellas" - sometimes local government officials - that allow prostitution to happen, according to a document released at a ministry work conference in Suzhou Saturday.More effort must be made to educate and rehabilitate women involved in the prostitution and obscene performance cases, the document said.According to the document, the MPS sent 27 groups of inspectors to 651 entertainment business venues in four municipalities and 20 provinces during the campaign. At some 381 of the venues, cases of prostitution or obscene performance were discovered.In July, the ministry sent 10 inspection groups to eight cities in Jilin, Shanghai, Guangdong, Hainan, Sichuan and Shaanxi, to raid 10 entertainment venues, resulting in the arrest of 370 suspects.In the following three months, the ministry and local police solved 54 major cases, the document said.
