BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government Monday strongly condemned the hostage-taking of Chinese tourists by a former police officer in Manila and demanded the Philippine government thoroughly investigate the incident. A bus with 21 Hong Kong tourists aboard was hijacked in the Philippine capital of Manila Monday morning. After negotiations, six hostages were freed. On Monday night, Philippine police launched a rescue operation and a number of hostages were killed and injured.In a press release, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi had telephoned his Philippine counterpart Alberto Romulo on the hostage-taking incident.During the conversation, Yang said the Chinese government had been highly concerned over the incident and had asked the Philippine government to spare no efforts in carrying out the rescue operation under the prerequisite of guaranteeing the safety of hostages.Yang said that the Chinese government was shocked about the incident, deplored the slaying of Hong Kong tourists, and strongly condemned the brutality against innocent tourists.The Chinese government demands the Philippine government launch a thorough investigation into the incident and inform the Chinese side of related details as soon as possible, he said.The Chinese government also demands the Philippine government do all it can to save the injured hostages and properly handle the remaining problems of the incident, Yang said.

AUCKLAND, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping arrived at Auckland on Thursday morning, starting his official visit to New Zealand.Xi made the tour as a guest of New Zealand Prime Minister John Key.In a written speech distributed at the airport upon his arrival, Xi said currently the relationship between China and New Zealand is at its best time.He said the two sides see frequent exchange of high-level visits, marked achievements have been scored in bilateral trade and economic cooperation, and cultural exchange has been deepened, which has brought substantial benefits to both countries and both peoples, and also contributed to the peace, stability and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region at large.The Chinese government has always attached importance to its relations with New Zealand, Xi said.The Chinese vice president said he was looking forward to meeting with leaders and people from all walks of New Zealand, aiming at discussing new approaches to enhancing bilateral friendship and exploring new cooperation.He said that he believes his visit would increase mutual trust, deepen friendship and expand cooperation, thus advancing the comprehensive bilateral cooperative relationship to a new starting point.During his stay in New Zealand, Xi is expected to hold talks with John Key and meet with Governor-General Anand Satyanand and other leaders. BEIJING, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Thursday urged members and officials of the Communist Party of China (CPC) to emulate the achievements of an official who died on duty after six years of dedicated work as a village Party secretary.Xi made the statement in Beijing while meeting with attendants to a ceremony to mark the release of a movie about the Party secretary's life in the village, and that of a book based on his diaries.The official, Shen Hao, had been a provincial government official in Anhui in central China, but was later assigned as a village Party secretary in 2004.Shen's devotion to his job brought about significant changes in the village and twice his term was extended at the request of the people in the village, though the work eventually cost him his life. He fell ill through constant overwork and died on November 6, 2009.Xi hailed Shen as a role model for CPC members and officials and urged them to maintain close ties with the people.
