The CEOs for auto giants Kia and Hyundai have refused to attend a congressional hearing to explain why hundreds of their vehicles have spontaneously burst into flames.Both carmakers and a spokesman for Democrats on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation have confirmed the companies’ refusal to send representatives to the hearing, which has been scheduled for next week.A Kia spokesman said the company is working with the committee to “analyze all relevant information associated with any fire or other safety-related matters and will take any necessary corrective action in a timely manner.”A Hyundai spokesman said, “Hyundai takes this matter very seriously, and fully appreciates the concerns of the Senate Commerce, Science & Transportation Committee including those of the Chairman and Ranking Member.”It was not immediately clear whether the U.S. Senate committee would postpone or cancel its Nov. 14 hearing on Kia and Hyundai fires.The call for the hearing came six months after Consumer Investigator Jackie Callaway, of WFTS television station in Tampa, Florida, first reported on the unexplained car fires.Since April, the WFTS I-team has exposed hundreds of Kia and Hyundai models manufactured since 2011 that caught fire across the country.“The hearing will focus on motor vehicle safety issues involving vehicle fires,” stated the identical letters – dated Oct. 16 – and sent to Kia Motors America President and CEO Seungkyu “Sean” Yoon and Hyundai Motor America's Kyung Soo “Kenny” Lee.The CEOs were asked to “promptly identify and respond to defects that may pose a fire risk” at the Nov. 14 hearing in front of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.In September, an Ohio mother spoke out and called for a federal investigation after watching her son burn alive in her 2014 Kia Soul parked at her apartment complex just outside of Cincinnati last year. 1926

Instead, they ended up unintentionally ruining some of their followers' appetites.Tick-borne illnesses are on the rise, so the CDC has been pushing Americans to check for ticks after spending time outdoors. On Friday, the agency reminded its followers just how small those the pests can be, tweeting two photos of a poppy seed muffin."Ticks can be the size of a poppy seed. The deadliest shooting in Texas history could have claimed even more lives if it weren't for a local resident who confronted the gunman, and another man who helped chase down the shooter.The resident, whose name has not yet been released, ran out of his house barefoot and exchanged gunfire with the shooter before the gunman sped away in a pearl-colored Fort Explorer. The armed resident then hailed a man across the street and got in his truck, telling him to chase down the gunman."I had to catch the guy. I had to make sure he was caught and at that point the gentleman riding with me said you may have to use your truck to get him off the road and there was no hesitation. Langendorff spoke to CNN on Monday.The gunman entered the small church in the rural town east of San Antonio, firing with an assault weapon at the congregation attending the morning service.A local resident grabbed his own rifle and engaged the gunman, said Freeman Martin, the regional director of the Texas Department of Public Safety."The suspect dropped his rifle, which was a Ruger AR assault-type rifle and fled from the church," said Martin."What do you say to the man who stepped up when he heard the gunshots? We hit about 95 (mph) ... trying to catch this guy until he eventually lost control on his own and went off into the ditch," Langendorff told CNN affiliate KSAT."The gentleman that was with me got out and rested his rifle on my hood and kept it aimed at him (the shooter), telling him to get out. There was no movement, there was none of that. I just know his brake lights were going on and off, so he might've been unconscious from the crash or something like that. I'm not sure."Langendorff felt the suspect, who crashed his vehicle near the county line, "just gave up."When police arrived about five minutes later, they approached the suspect's vehicle and found the gunman inside dead of a bullet wound. He was later identified as Devin Patrick Kelley.Asked by CNN what he was thinking at the time, Langendorff said, "Nothing. Get him." Why? Greg Abbott said.It's the deadliest mass shooting in Texas history -- and the fifth deadliest in modern US history.The Sutherland Springs resident's actions echoed another man's act of bravery during a different church shooting earlier this year in Antioch, Tennessee.As the service at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ was ending on September 24, a gunman -- whom police identified as 25-year-old Emanuel Kidega Samson -- entered the church with a pair of pistols and started firing. An usher at the church, Robert Engle, sprang into action -- struggling with the suspect, even as he was being pistol-whipped, police said."Mr. Samson didn't expect Mr. Engle to encounter him, to struggle with him, to try to stop the shooting," said Don Aaron, the spokesman for the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.During the altercation, the gunman accidentally shot himself in the chest with his own weapon, police said.When the gunman fell, Engle, despite his head injuries, ran to his car and came back with a pistol of his own, police said.Engle, who has a permit for a handgun, then made sure Samson stayed on the ground until officers arrived, Aaron said.  5564

The classified ads website Backpage.com has been seized by federal law enforcement agencies, according to a banner that popped up on the site Friday.The banner says, "backpage.com and affiliated websites have been seized as part of an enforcement action" by the FBI, US Postal Inspection Service and the IRS Criminal Investigation Division.Lawmakers on Capitol Hill and advocacy groups have long called for an investigation into Backpage.com for allegedly facilitating prostitution and sex trafficking.A spokesperson for the Justice Department confirmed to CNN that the website has been seized and that additional information would be made available Friday evening. However, a judge decided that the federal case should remain sealed on Friday night. No other additional information was provided.A two-year Senate investigation into online sex trafficking found that found that Backpage.com knowingly aided criminal sex trafficking of women and young girls, simply scrubbing terms from ads such as "Lolita," "teenage," "rape," "amber alert," and publishing them on its site. After the investigation was published in January 2017, Backpage.com shut down its adult ads section.The company has been targeted with several lawsuits over the years, but has been largely protected by Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, a legal protection that gives a broad layer of immunity to online companies from being held liable for user-generated content. Companies are supposed to act in good faith to protect users, but critics argue the law can be used as a shield. The law, however, does not, protect sites from federal liability against criminal law, like child-pornography laws.Last month, however, the Senate approved bipartisan legislation called the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act.
