INGLEWOOD (CNS) - A suspect allegedly armed with a sword opened fire on responding officers Wednesday at or near the Church of Scientology in Inglewood, injuring two of them before he was himself wounded by return fire, possibly fatally, police said.One officer was struck in a hand and the other in an arm in the shooting, which was reported about 3:30 p.m. in the 300 block of South Market Street, according to the Inglewood Police Department.Both were taken to a hospital for treatment of what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.The suspect, initially reported by police to have been killed in the exchange of gunfire, was later taken to a hospital, according to a fire department spokesman.Inglewood police Lt. Neal Cochran, citing initial information from the scene, said the suspect was believed to have been fatally wounded, but subsequent reports indicated he was in grave condition.The gunfire erupted after two officers responded to a report of a male suspect armed with a sword at or near the Church of Scientology at 315 S. (CNS) - Thousands of Irvine residents evacuated due to the Silverado Fire were returning home Wednesday morning as firefighters worked to contain the blaze, which injured two firefighters and has blackened 13,354 acres, and containment has increased from 5 to 25%, authorities said."Today, fire crews will reinforce existing controlled lines," a Cal Fire spokesman said. "With favorable weather, fire crews will find opportunities to establish more control lines."And so far, though more than 69,000 buildings were threatened by flames, none were destroyed.This follows a night of moderate fire behavior as red flag conditions -- high winds, low humidity and dry vegetation -- ended, according to the agency.According to Orange County Fire Authority's Steve Concialdi, who serves as spokesman for the Silverado Fire, residents in the following areas of Irvine were cleared to return:-- Residents south of Portola Parkway and west of the 133 Toll Road, as well as those east of the 133 Toll Road to Portola High School-- From north of Great Park Boulevard to Irvine Boulevard, including the commercial area west of Bake Parkway and south of Irvine Boulevard to Toledo Way-- South of Portola Parkway, east of the 133 Toll Road and west of AxisIrvine Boulevard between Axis and Alton Parkway remains closed, Concialdi said.The repopulation was a "testament to the hard work of all firefighters on the ground and in the air that have worked hard the past two days to protect life and property," Concialdi said, adding that no homes have been damaged or destroyed as a result of the Silverado Fire.At its height, 70,000 people were under evacuation orders in Irvine and another 9,500 evacuated in Lake Forest, according to the OCFA and Lake Forest officials. It was unclear how many residents remained evacuated.About 1,200 personnel were assigned to fight the fire, Concialdi said.At least 14 helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft battled the fire, according to OCFA Chief Brian Fennessy, who said the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection would take command of the Silverado and Blue Ridge fires.The fire erupted at 6:47 a.m. Monday in the area of Santiago Canyon and Silverado Canyon roads in the Santa Ana Mountains.Late Monday, Southern California Edison told California officials that a lashing wire may have contacted its overhead primary conductor, sparking the fire. SCE sent a letter to the California Public Utilities Commission on Monday night acknowledging it had overhead electrical facilities in the area where the blaze broke out.Five firefighters have been injured in the Silverado blaze, Fennessy said. Silverado and Trabuco Canyons along Live Oak Canyon were under evacuation warnings, a spokesperson for the agency said.The OCFA also announced an evacuation warning Tuesday morning for Mission Viejo in the areas of El Toro Road to the north, Marguerite Parkway to the west, Upper Oso Reservoir to the east, and Los Alisos Boulevard to the south. With 554 homes in Mission Viejo under an evacuation warning, the city has opened up the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center as a shelter, officials said.Later Tuesday, a mandatory evacuation order was issued for residents of Modjeska Canyon.Temporary evacuation points in the county were at the Brea Community Center, 695 Madison Way; Santiago Canyon College, 8045 E. In response to a growing trend on social media, the Food and Drug Administration published a public warning this week about the dangers of taking too much of an allergy medication, diphenhydramine, commonly known as Benadryl.“We are aware of news reports of teenagers ending up in emergency rooms or dying after participating in the “Benadryl Challenge” encouraged in videos posted on the social media application TikTok,” the statement reads.When a teen girl died in August in Oklahoma City, her family blamed the 15-year-old’s death on a Benadryl overdose. The family blamed a “challenge” on TikTok where participants take a dozen or so doses of the allergy medication to experience hallucinations.Earlier this year, there were reports out of Fort Worth, Texas that three teens became sick and had to be rushed to the hospital after taking large amounts of the medication. According to Newsweek, when they recovered, the teens told officers they had taken the allergy medication as part of the TikTok challenge.Taking more than the recommended dose of Benadryl “can lead to serious heart problems, seizures, coma, or even death,” the FDA states.“We are investigating these reports and conducting a review to determine if additional cases have been reported,” the FDA stated. “We also contacted TikTok and strongly urged them to remove the videos from their platform and to be vigilant to remove additional videos that may be posted.”Johnson & Johnson, who manufacture Benadryl, released a statement to media outlets stating, in part, “The health and safety of people who use our products is our top priority. The BENADRYL TikTok trend is extremely concerning, dangerous and should be stopped immediately.”The FDA reminds parents and caregivers to lock up medicines to prevent accidental overdoses. INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis lawyer is accused of flashing a bus carrying a girls' basketball team on two separate occasions while driving. Norwell High School girls’ basketball coach Eric Thornton said he was driving the girls to a tournament in June when a man pulled up beside their bus on I-70 near the airport and exposed himself. “He knew it was a school bus,” said Thornton. “(He) knew it was high school aged females on the bus.”The man, who police have identified as Raymond Fairchild, then exited the highway before the team could get the license plate on his Honda CRV. “The girls were horrified and just very disturbed,” said Thornton. In an attempt to identify the alleged flasher, Thornton posted a photo taken moments before the incident on social media. That post made its way to Union City where a second girls’ basketball team reported a similar incident last February – from what appeared to be the same man. “Once we found out that he’d done it before it was obvious this was a pattern,” said Thornton. It didn’t take long before someone on Facebook recognized that man as Fairchild and contacted investigators. The 71-year-old is listed as having a law office in downtown Indianapolis. “He should never be allowed to practice law again in my opinion,” said Thornton. “He should be put away for a time.”Fairchild now faces six counts of public nudity and indecency charges. His first court appearance is set for October 26. “It’s a crime against innocent, na?ve girls who just saw abnormal behavior and had no idea what would happen next,” said Thornton. “He needs to be severely punished for his behavior.”  1669

INDIANAPOLIS -- A woman who comforted an IUPUI student during her last moments after being struck by a school bus Monday hopes her family knows everyone did all they could for her.Fatima Hassuneh, 18, was crossing a street at an intersection on IUPUI’s campus around 1:30 p.m. Monday when a bus attempting to make a left-hand turn struck her.School officials said the bus was under contract with Indianapolis Public Schools, but owned by Durham Transportation. Witnesses and IUPUI officials say Hassuneh had the right of way.Hassuneh was a pre-med student who aspired to become a doctor, according to a post by the IUPUI Muslim Student Association.“Fatima, an aspiring doctor, was a sophomore in biology and was known for her kind heart and sense of humor,” the Muslim Student Association wrote. “She was a gift among us and has returned to her Lord. She was very active in our community and would often lead interfaith events. May Allah allow her to continue to reap the benefits of those deeds.”At the time of the crash, Alysa Schultz and her boyfriend were sitting at a red light at the very same intersection. She said that as soon as she saw what happened, her boyfriend started calling 911 while she rushed to check on Hassuneh.“As I was kind of kneeling there next to her, all she was doing was just holding her hand out, so I just grabbed it and held onto it,” Schultz said. “People were getting mad, saying, ‘Don’t touch her. Don’t move her.’ But at the same time, that one little bit of humanity – just hold on to her hand – that’s probably all she wanted.”Schultz said she didn’t know Hassuneh – but that her friends and classmates have messaged her since telling her what a wonderful person she was.“I had a lot of people message me on Facebook saying how awesome of a person she was and how beautiful and smart and driven and how involved she was,” Schultz said. “I really wish I would have known her.”Schultz, a former IUPUI student herself, said she hopes Hassuneh’s family can take some comfort from all of the efforts made to save her.“I hope that her family knows that there were six people calling the police, four people running around the corner to grab any police who were nearby,” Shultz said. “Everybody was stopping and blocking off the road so that no one could come near the situation. Everyone at IUPUI was like a family doing everything they possibly could for her, and I really hope that’s comforting to the family.”An Islamic funeral prayer, a janaza, was planned for Tuesday night for Hassuneh at the Alhuda Foundation in Fishers.
