Among them, about 80 percent were non-officials, and over 60 percent were from the central or southern part of the island.Hailing the Straits Forum as a pioneering innovation, Jia said he believed the forum would make greater contributions to grassroots-level exchanges between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, and contribute to the peaceful development of cross-Strait ties.Huang Ming-hui, vice chairwoman of Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang party, also said enhanced exchanges between the two sides across the Taiwan Strait would help reduce misunderstandings and continuous communications help reach consensus.

GUIYANG, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong Tuesday proposed that China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) study the feasibility of educational integration at a proper time to ensure the supply of skilled people for the development of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area.Liu, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the first China-ASEAN Education Minister Roundtable Conference and the third China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week in Guiyang, capital of southwest China's Guizhou Province.China and ASEAN should make efforts to integrate their educational resources, remove obstacles preventing student exchanges and encourage the recognition of academic degrees conferred in respective countries, so as to enhance the attraction and competitiveness of higher education in the region, she said."The Chinese government has always attached great importance to educational exchanges and cooperation with the ASEAN nations," she said.The two sides had established a comprehensive partnership of cooperation in education and developed new methods of educational exchanges with regional characteristics.

CHANGCHUN, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Floods have left 63 people dead and 59 missing in northeast China's Jilin Province over the past two months, local authorities said Monday.More than 4 million people have been affected since the flood season began in June and some 700,000 people have been evacuated, the Jilin Provincial Civil Affairs Department said in a statement.Additionally, about 62,000 houses have collapsed and 193,000 others have been damaged, along with 1.16 million hectares of cropland having been inundated, the statement said.Direct economic losses were estimated at almost 19 billion yuan (2.8 billion U.S. dollars), it added.In the hardest-hit areas, flash floods have cut roads, isolated villages and disrupted communications and water supplies.In the industrial city of Tonghua, torrential rains have damaged water pipelines, leaving 300,000 people without tap water for two days.Residents have largely relied on bottled water over the past 48 hours as authorities ordered 25 fire trucks to deliver water for domestic purposes aside from drinking to residential communities from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. everyday.About 1,700 tons of water had been delivered by truck, officials said.

  

BEIJING, June 14 (Xinhua) -- China's State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) has sent four working teams Monday to help flood control in provinces and regions pounded by heavy rains that triggered floods and mud slides.The flood control authority held a meeting Monday night with the Ministry of Water Resources agreeing to dispatch one more working team to central Hunan Province to help consolidate river banks along the upper reaches of the Xiangjiang River and ensure the safety of reservoirs.Three other teams were separately sent Monday afternoon to Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the eastern province of Fujian.From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, torrential rains pelted Guangxi, provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, Hunan and Jiangxi. Some regions even saw rainstorms, according to the SFDH.At least 24 people are missing after flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains engulfed two vehicles in Fujian Province Monday, according to a local official.The authority asked the Guangxi team to help with floods control and mud slides prevention work there. It ordered the team sent to Fujian to help with rescue work.The team for Xinjiang will help investigate the collapse of a reservoir dam in Xinjiang on Monday morning after heavy rains on the previous night.The local government had evacuated more than 200 families living downstream the reservoir. No casualties are reported so far.

  

SHANGHAI, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) - Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), China's largest commercial port and one of the country's major gateways for foreign trade, reported a 52 percent increase in profits during the first half of the year.Net profits for SIPG were 2.6 billion yuan (385 million U.S. dollars) from January to June, up 52.4 percent year on year, the company said in a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange on Saturday.Further, earnings per share rose 52 percent from a year earlier to 0.12 yuan, according to the statement.The company attributed the growth mainly to China's robust trade performance in the first half of the year.During the first half of 2010, China's exports rose 35.2 percent to 705.09 billion U.S. dollars while imports increased 52.7 percent to 649.79 billion U.S. dollars, according to the General Administration of Customs.SIPG shares on the Shanghai bourse closed down 0.48 percent to 4.17 yuan on Friday.
