SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A controversial Target store opened its doors Tuesday night in North Park, on University Avenue at the corner of Ray Street. Not everyone was on board when plans for the two-story Target were announced. North Park residents worried about the impact the retailer would have on local businesses and on parking in an already crowded neighborhood. There was also frustration when Target painted over a popular mural that had been on the side of the building for years. San Diego State University professor Dana Kuhn said economically, Target could have a positive impact on the community by creating jobs and boosting businesses nearby. Kuhn said people spending money at Target would inevitably mean they spend money in surrounding businesses. Kuhn also explained that Target will provided goods and services the community needs and that the money spent will stay in North Park. Target says the new store created 60 jobs and many of the employees do live nearby. Target is officially open as of Tuesday night but a grand opening for the community is scheduled for Sunday, March 17. 1106

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A group of rising juniors at Del Norte knows navigating middle and high school can be hard, and doing it virtually, can be even harder."Staying alone in the house and social distancing has made it hard to hang out with friends but with this platform, they can learn from their community and learn from their community's experiences." In July, they created Light the Way Project and have been helping peers across San Diego, the U.S., and the world with virtual peer-to-peer webinars followed by Q & A sessions."When we talk about our experiences people younger than us they feel better and reassured about the future," said one of the group's administrators. "People appreciate we're doing this especially in a pandemic." The group covers relevant topics like competitive culture, dealing with stress and anxiety, and managing your time when learning from home. "We talked about different strategies such as sleep schedules, managing priorities, divide and conquer strategies, and how to take productive breaks."They promote their events through social media, word of mouth, and forums like NextDoor. Eighty-five students hopped in on their first webinar in July, their most recent one drew in over 100."We noticed there's a lot of research and literature behind positive effects with peer mentorship as it alleviates stress and anxiety."The group is planning a summit in January tailored to those with an interest in engineering. 1461

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UC San Diego announced Thursday that five years after it was destroyed in the Syrian civil war, the ancient Temple of Bel in Palmyra, Syria has been digitally reconstructed by the university library's Digital Media Lab using 3D methods and artificial intelligence applications.Inspired by a past collaboration between the library and UC San Diego's Levantine Archaeology Laboratory, the project resulted in the digital preservation of more than a dozen lost reliefs, sculptures, frescos and paintings, all made publicly available on the library's digital collections website.Destroyed in 2015, the Temple of Bel has been called one of the most important temples in the entire Middle East -- along with Lebanon's Baalbek -- and served as one of the best-preserved examples of ancient art and architecture, a statement from the library said. It attracts more than 150,000 tourists annually.Through the use of more than 3,000 publicly available digital photographs taken over the course of a decade, the library recreated the structure using Pointcloud, an online viewing platform."This project underscores the library's commitment to engaging in collaborative efforts to better understand how the university can support emerging teaching and research formats," said Roger Smith, interim associate university librarian for scholarly tools and methods at the UC San Diego Library. "It also allows the library to better plan for our role in acquiring, preserving and sharing scholarship while incorporating new media and data formats."The digital photographs used to create the virtual rendering of the Temple of Bel were sourced from open-access repositories such as the NewPalmyra project, the Roman Society, Oxford University and individual tourists, then populated into Pointcloud, which allows users to interactively explore the once- massive temple compound. Additionally, artificial intelligence applications were used to isolate the temple's important features from other elements that may have appeared in the images, such as tourists, weather conditions and foliage."This new technology has allowed the Library to combine image data from many different sources," said Scott McAvoy, manager of the Library's Digital Media Lab. "For example, a photo from a Polish tourist visiting in 2010 can be combined with a photo from a Japanese tourist visiting five years later to extract 3D features. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A College Area homeowner got a huge shock when he returned home from a camping trip: The presence of some uninvited guests.Bill Yogerst left Saturday at 12 p.m. from his home on Catoctin Drive. On Monday morning, he got a call from his roommate, who had also been out of town, telling him the grates on the outside of the granny flat had been damaged.     Inside the house, there was one disturbing discovery after another.    "There was a trail of dirt in the shower. They had urinated on the toilet. He also found shoes and some sweatpants in his hamper that didn't belong to him. Also throughout the house were odd shrines of carefully positioned, mismatched household objects."That is skin-crawling creepy," said Yogerst.The feeling didn't go away when he reached the bedroom."I looked at my bed and it wasn't made. Sheets were pulled down and the pillows rearranged and stacked ... realized they were sleeping in my bed ... a creepy feeling of violation," said Yogerst.The intruders in this twisted Goldilocks tale: A homeless couple in their 20s. Neighbors spotted them in the driveway on Sunday. Yogerst says they found his hidden spare key and walked right in."It was like a Holiday Inn. They were enjoying their stay," said Yogerst.Yogerst says the presence of homeless in the area has increased in the past two years."Some of the churches, God bless them, do feed them, but that does bring them in," said Yogerst.Yogerst says only a few items were taken, including loose change, toiletries, and prescription medication. One of the suspects has a distinct description: A transient African-American woman, about 5-foot 5-inches tall, with bright orange hair.
