SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Keeping kids active, while also letting them follow their passion, is a top priority for a lot of parents.But often it comes at a cost. A new study from CompareCards.com shows that 46% of parents spend more than ,000 a year on activities for their kids, and 27% spend more than ,000. "As much as we love our kids as parents, and as much as we want them to pursue their dreams, life is expensive in 2019," says Matt Schulz, an Industry Analyst with CompareCards.com. "But you also have to be able to do so without ruining your own dreams."One San Diego parent thinks she has a way to help. Jessica Mendez is trying to launch an online marketplace where parents can trade used sports equipment to help defray the costs."Every season, kids grow," says Mendez. "Every few months you have to purchase new cleats, a new bat to grow with them."Mendez has four boys that have been involved in all kinds of sports. As they've grown, old equipment has piled up in her garage. Mendez thinks she can have the site up in about a year. She also asked other family members to chip in some money instead of buying toys for birthday or holiday gifts.White says her family spends -6,000 a year on registration, travel and all the other costs associated with extracurricular activities. But it's worth it."I want them to be well rounded and exposed to many opportunities," she says, adding that the activities keep her kids away from doing anything that may get them into trouble.The study also found that nearly 80% of parents believe their child's activities could one day lead to income, whether in the form of a scholarship, job or side-hustle.Schulz says it's also essential to involve your children in discussions about how their activities factor into the budget."It makes sense to be open and honest with your kids about the cost of these things," he says. 3411

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jessica Mattly was all smiles Thursday, ironically, thanks to the state Employment Development Department.“For the first time they called me,” she said. “I didn't call them. It was great.”A representative from the EDD, which issues unemployment insurance payments, called Mattly to tell her that they finally processed her application for jobless benefits. They’d begin by sending her four weeks of backpay.Mattly’s had been trying to get through to the EDD since she lost her job at a San Diego resort in late March, when Coronavirus restrictions went into effect. She filed for unemployment immediately, but like thousands of other San Diegans, got a request from the EDD for identity verification.She submitted the necessary documents, but never heard anything back.“I would just keep dialing, and keep dialing, and keep dialing, and I understand the definition of insanity. I do. And it felt like that was my only option,” she said.Mattly kept running into walls, until she turned to State Sen. Ben Hueso’s office, which contacted the EDD on her behalf.That lead to Thursday's phone call.Others, like Audee Kammer - just wouldn't take no for an answer.The EDD denied her identity documentation twice. She called hundreds of times - finally appealing the denials and getting a telephone hearing with a judge, who authorized payments.“I could see how some people, it could just throw them into deep depression and despair,” she said. “I feel for a lot of people out there that are in my same situation that I was and don't have the drive to keep knocking on that door.”Meanwhile, the latest state numbers show more than 230,000 San Diego County residents are unemployed.The EDD says its funding has increased drastically since the pandemic began and is now undertaking a massive hiring effort.It has filled 900 new positions to process an unprecedented amount of claims - with an additional 1,900 openings.Sen. The change was announced by its producers Sunday at the end of a sold-out three day festival, its fifth at the North County location. Concerts will be held on Petco Park's playing field, Sycuan Stage at the Park, Lexus Premier Lot, and the Tailgate Lot, KAABOO officials said. “The location of Petco Park and its surrounding venues in downtown San Diego provides fans and artists alike the opportunity to enjoy everything that the vibrant metro area has to offer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Local, independently owned grocery stores are keeping an eye on a potential grocery worker strike in Southern California. On Monday, UFCW Local 135 will vote to authorize strikes at Albertsons, Vons and Ralphs. Union representatives say employees have been working without a contract since March. Union president, Todd Walters, says they've met 17 times with the companies asking for better wages, health benefits and pensions. In South Park, the owner of a small grocery store says he hopes the bigger retailers don't enter a strike. David Halabo owns Food Bowl Market with his wife. During the last strike in 2003, Halabo says his business saw an increase in customers for specific items like bread, milk and eggs. Halabo says he's keeping an eye on the negotiations, but says he'll only stock up on extra items if the workers do go on strike. The small business owner says, although is business would benefit, he doesn't want to see a strike happen.Ralphs spokesperson John Votava sent 10News a statement from the company, saying:"We are negotiating in good faith with the union for a fair and balanced contract that is good for our associates, as well as our company. As you know, negotiations are about finding compromise, and this can take time. Throughout the negotiations, it's business as usual in our stores and Ralphs is extremely proud of our associates who remain focused on serving our customers, communities and each other."Vons/Albertson's spokesperson Melissa Hill sent this statement as well, saying:"We are committed to working collaboratively with the unions to ensure that we reach an agreement that is fair to our employees, good for our customers and allows Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions to remain competitive in the Southern California market.
