SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There's no better way to observe San Diego's history, and perhaps future, than through public murals throughout the county.While many of these murals serve as a great boost to social media profiles, they often double as a visual journey showing our region's past and what we hold dear.One thing San Diego is often associated with, happiness. Our scenic coastline, diverse communities, and bevvy of sunshine throughout the year can be thanked for that.But for those trying times, the "Smile, You're in San Diego" mural at 1st Ave. and C St. serves as a reminder. The mural's artists, Pheobe Cornog and Roxy Prima of Pandr Design Co., we tasked with the design by the San Diego Tourism Authority."They originally just wanted a smiley face. The legs of the Coronado Bay Bridge are covered in vibrant pieces, ranging from pieces like "Founding of Mexico City," "Birth of La Raza," and "Female Inteligencia."And over in Liberty Station another piece of local history at the "Greetings from US Naval Training Station" mural. Inside each letter of the postcard design is an era of the training station's history, from US Navy facility to public market."SeaWalls: Murals for Oceans," on Fourth Ave., was painted by the Cohort Collective to raise environmental issues. The group installed 18 murals around the county to bring topics of overfishing and ocean reef conservation to onlookers."There's not enough public art, we don't think, in San Diego. We have the best weather and people are outside all the time, so we should have more art on the streets and for people to easily access," Cornog said.A way for our history and future to shine through, wherever you may be in San Diego."We feel art shouldn't just be in galleries, it should be everywhere you look," Prima added. 2715

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park are scheduled to reopen to the public on June 20.The Saturday, June 20, opening ends the first major closure in San Diego Zoo Global’s 103-year history.The Zoo and Safari Park were closed in mid-March amid the coronavirus pandemic.Officials noted that health and safety measures that comply with local and state guidelines would be in place at both the Zoo and Safari Park.Some of the modifications at the parks include:face coverings required for all guests over 2 years of agepracticing social distancinglimited dining and shopping, overall reduced park hoursreduction of guests in the parks (operating at limited capacity)limited guest parkingmembers and guests will not be allowed to leave the parks and re-enter on the same dayone-way path adjustments and barriers to help guests navigate safelyincreased number of hand-washing and sanitizing locationsrobust cleaning routineVisitors will be asked health questions upon entry.The following will not be available during the parks’ initial reopening phase: the Zoo’s Guided Bus Tour, Kangaroo Bus and Skyfari Aerial Tram, and the Safari Park’s Africa Tram.Other activities that traditionally include larger numbers of guests -- including some shows, tours and Safari experiences -- will also be temporarily unavailable.Paul Baribault, president/CEO for San Diego Zoo Global, said in a statement, “As the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park reopen to guests, it’s true that we will be faced with a new normal. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Office of Education says schools may hold on-campus classes beginning Tuesday under new guidance. The updated county health orders that take effect June 16 allows all schools -- with the exception of colleges and universities -- to hold on-campus classes as long as the schools comply with measures outlined by the California Department of Public Health.Those measures include face coverings required at all times, daily temperature checks recommended, increased emphasis on hand washing and sanitizing, enhanced cleaning and disinfecting in the classrooms and setting classrooms up to allow for increased physical distance between students.Each school must complete and post a document detailing the actions the school is taking to comply with the industry guidance issued by the state.The order from the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency says: "All public, charter and private schools may hold classes or school business operations on the school campus, provided the school complies with the measures contained in the State COVID-19 Industry Guidance: Schools and School-Based Programs issued by the CDPH (including the face covering requirements contained therein), also incorporating where feasible the guidelines provided in Stronger Together: A Guidebook for the Safe Reopening of California’s Public Schools issued by the California Department of Education. Each school shall complete and post a document detailing the actions the school is taking to comply with the CDPH Industry Guidance measures after considering the CDE Guidelines noted above. Colleges and Universities shall not hold classes or other school activities where students gather on the school campus, except for research-related activities in colleges and universities and where necessary to train students who will serve as essential workers." 1884

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of local college students scrambled Tuesday to pack up their belongings and make travel arrangements after San Diego State University and the University of San Diego informed students they had roughly 24 hours to vacate their dorms.In a campus-wide email Tuesday, SDSU said students needed to move out by 7 p.m. Wednesday unless they had a hardship.SDSU said it rapidly expedited its move-out plans after seven Bay Area counties instituted shelter-in-place orders to combat the coronavirus. The university said it was “anticipating that more cities will follow.”“Everyone is shocked. This hasn’t really happened before so no one really knows how to deal with it,” said SDSU student Courtney Robinson.Sophomore Samantha Horan added, “People are just scared and they’re trying to get home as quick as they can.”The university said students with health or safety risks, those who could not return home, and students without an alternate residence could remain on campus. Last week, SDSU had encouraged students to consider staying home after spring break. While some students said they anticipated the move-out order, others were caught off guard.“I was planning on staying [during spring break] so I had nothing packed at all,” said student John Magee.Magee was trying to decide which items to pack in his car for the drive to San Jose, and which to leave behind.“If we leave anything, will it be tossed out? Or how will we get it?” he wondered.The university said students could leave non-essential belongings behind “if absolutely necessary.” “However, it cannot be determined at this time when you will be able to collect any left belongings,” SDSU said in a statement.The university said students will receive a credit for any paid rent and unused meal plans.Other local universities had already encouraged their students to leave dorms in the coming days.
