SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The future of Horton Plaza was teased in a new set of renderings released by the firm that purchased the aging mall.Stockdale Capital Partners purchased Horton Plaza in June 2018 with the aim of revitalizing the center into a mixed-use high-tech office and retail space. Wednesday, the firm gave a glimpse at The Campus at Horton, showing a completely transformed Nordstrom building from a concrete facade into a glass-covered office space. The building will also see an addition 150,000-square-feet of space added to the existing structure.RELATED: Time's up: Horton Plaza says goodbye to iconic Jessop's Clock“The Campus at Horton is exactly what we hear some high tech companies are seeking in San Diego,” Mark Cafferty, President and CEO of the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation, said in a release. “The existing open floor plans and expansive square footage of the current Horton Plaza are perfectly suited to the design and layout of modern office spaces.”Another addition teased is an "amenity deck" that will take the current place of the mall's food court. The firm says several food and beverage options and green outdoor space will be added for visitors and onsite employees.Stockdale Capital Partners says the revamp's office space will house 3,000-4,000 innovation economy jobs.RELATED: As other Horton Plaza stops hang on, Regal movie theater closes its doors“The Campus at Horton is the type of visionary placemaking we need to make downtown San Diego an even more incredible place to live and work,” said Betsy Brennan, President and CEO of the Downtown San Diego Partnership. “Moving this project forward with expediency will benefit our entire community and promote its economic vitality.”The city's Economic Development and Intergovernmental Relations committee will consider the plan during their Thursday meeting. Stockdale Capital Partners hopes to begin construction later this year, with plans to complete the overhaul in 2020. 1996

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The man wanted for a shooting outside of an unlicensed marijuana dispensary in unincorporated El Cajon has been arrested. The San Diego Sheriff's Department (SDSO) issued an arrest warrant for 18-year-old Richard Anthony Bell, of El Cajon, on Dec. 8 in connection with the shooting four days earlier in the 1600 block of N. 2nd Street.A 16-year-old was shot outside of the illegal dispensary and taken to a nearby hospital, where the victim remains and is expected to survive. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The coronavirus pandemic is preventing many seniors in skilled nursing facilities from seeing their families. UC San Diego students are working to help combat their loneliness with their Sunshine 4 Seniors project. Students would spend their weekends visiting seniors as part of a volunteer project before classes were canceled at UC San Diego. The pandemic halted their visits. "We came up with this project, which was creating cards for seniors at St. Paul Senior Services," says student Olivia Michael. The goal of the project is for students to "step in and fill the loneliness and isolation that the senior citizen communities are feeling, especially during this pandemic," says Morgan Montoya. The students say loneliness in seniors can have damaging effects on the brain. "Olivia and I are near-cognitive science majors," says Montoya. "Our majors really helped us to understand the problems that loneliness poses. With senior citizens having an abundance of isolation and loneliness, it can actually deregulate the brain and cause a progression of Alzheimer's or depression."The Sunshine 4 Seniors project launched nearly a month ago. So far, more than 200 cards have been sent to seniors in skilled nursing facilities. The students say there are thousands of seniors who are not allowed to see their loved ones during this time. They hope to spread some sunshine to as many seniors as they can. "The goal is just to get as many people writing cards as possible," says Michael. "Any means that you have to do it, I just encourage you to get started." 1586

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The cost of living in San Diego doesn’t always make it easy for local families to take vacations. Hotels and home rentals can drain a family’s savings. 10News reporter Jennifer Kastner found a local family that’s able to go jet setting without breaking the bank, thanks to a home exchange network.Dana Fallentine, her husband, and their four kids have been taking incredible vacations at an impressive savings. “[We’re talking] thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars,” she tells 10News. Fallentine found the website Love Home Swap, which connects users with homeowners around the world. Arrangements can be made to do temporary home trades. The fee is 0 a year. Compare that to the most recent average U.S. hotel price, which is 0 a night, according to Statistica. Members can swap homes or use points to stay in rental homes. Type in where you want to go and when. Browse the options to see photos and amenities, and then start chatting with the owner. For privacy and security, Love Home Swap does ID verification. For protection, phone numbers, email addresses and home addresses are not made visible on the website. The Fallentine family's most memorable experience was from a swap they did with an Italian family. The Italians got to the Fallentine's home the night before the Fallentine's flew off to the Italians' home in Rome.“I took them to Costco. They bought all this food and then they said, ‘Oh, we're going make you guys dinner.’ I’m like, ‘Totally! I’m not going to pass up a meal by real Italians. I mean, that's crazy!’”Fallentine says when her own family home-swaps, having access to another home’s kitchen is one of the biggest cost-savers.“If you're thinking about the food aspect, just to be able to cook your own food is amazing and [you have a] full kitchen with everything you need,” she adds.Another perk is having access to a home's laundry room. It allows the Fallentines to save on airline baggage fees, because now they can carry-on backpacks and wash their clothes at the vacation homes. For a family wanting to live large on a small budget, she says Love Home Swap has been a game changer. “It saves money. It’s just common sense, basically,” says Dana. 2235
