CHONGQING, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Rain-triggered landslides in southwest China Monday blocked a river, creating a barrier lake in Chongqing Municipality and forcing the evacuation of more than 12,000 people, flood control authorities said.The landslide blocked the Luojiang River in Chengkou County early Monday, creating a dam holding 15 to 20 million cubic meters of water, said Xing Hua, a Chengkou Water Resources Bureau spokesman.As of 5 a.m. Monday, the barrier lake was five-square-kilometers in area and 18-meters deep, said Xing.Photo taken on July 19, 2010 shows the Ciqikou Town surrounded by flood water of the Jialingjiang River, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality. XINING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- A senior anti-corruption official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Monday urged strict supervision and inspection of relief and reconstruction work in Zhouqu County, which was devastated by a massive mudslide on Aug. 8.A supervision and inspection system must be established to ensure thorough implementation of the central authorities' instructions on disaster relief and reconstruction, said He Yong, deputy secretary of the CPC's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.He made the remarks at a conference on supervision and inspection of relief funds and supplies.He instructed intensified supervision and inspection of medical, mud-clearing, infrastructure rebuilding, resident relocation and epidemic prevention operations.He also ordered stepped-up supervision of the use of disaster relief funds, supplies and donations, and asked local officials to make public how they were utilizing the funds in a timely manner.He said the principle of openness and transparency must be applied throughout the period of disaster relief work and reconstruction, and vowed to punish any misuse of relief funds and supplies.The mudslide has killed 1,254 while 490 people remain missing as of Monday.

Ltd. The 42-year-old company is one of China's top five truck producers.Wen inspected an assembly line that produces a heavy truck every six minutes. He also talked with workers and fitted wheels to a tractor truck under the workers' direction."We must maintain the continuity and stability of macro-economic policies to ensure favorable external conditions for enterprises. But a company's growth ultimately relies on its inner drive. Companies should improve quality, develop new products and expand their market," he said.Wen also visited Shaanxi Huasheng (Group) Corp. Fruit Co. Ltd., a high-tech agriculture company in the apple industry. The company has production bases in more than 20 counties."The global economy is recovering, but at a slow pace. WUHAN/XI'AN, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in two Chinese provinces traversed by the Hanjiang River, the largest branch of the swollen Yangtze River, issued fresh flood warnings Friday.The Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in central Hubei Province said areas along the Hanjiang River will face severe floods.Pressure is building at the Danjiangkou reservoir, which is already dealing with the worst flooding of the year so far.The water level in the reservoir had risen to 150.74 meters by Friday, about 1.74 meters above the warning line, and is expected to rise to 152 meters before the end of the month.Engineers at the reservoir more than doubled the flow rate of water from 1,920 cubic-meters per second to 5,000 cubic-meters per second.Along the upper reaches of the Hanjiang River in Shaanxi Province, floods and landslides had left at least 73 people dead and 121 missing as of Friday noon, the provincial government said.About 213,000 residents from 24 counties and districts in the cities of Hanzhong, Ankang and Shangluo in southern Shaanxi have been evacuated. More than 60,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged.A new round of rainstorms began to pound the region Thursday. Between 20 to 80 millimeters of rain has fallen, raising water levels in the Hanjiang River.Authorities in Shaanxi have ordered disaster relief agencies and government departments evacuate flood-threatened residents as soon as possible.Floods in China this year had left 742 people dead and 367 missing as of 9:00 a.m. Friday.
