SAN DIEGO (KGTV) —This month, one of the best annual meteor showers will give stargazers plenty to look to the sky for.The Perseid meteor shower will be at its peak from Aug. 11 - 13, with some experts even predicting an "outburst" of meteors this year. The best meteor activity is predicted for overnight Aug. 12.Fireballs are expected to streak across the sky at a rate of 60-70 meteors per hour, but in outburst years, that rate can jump to about 150-200 meteors an hour.RELATED: 521
SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- On a clear, sunny day in February, the sound of a bell announces the arrival of Naval Commander John C. Witte as he boards the USS Annapolis. He's in charge of the roughly 160 sailors who serve aboard the submarine, one of several boats stationed at Naval Base Point Loma."Submarining takes a lot of mental toughness and these guys will work long hours but they'll do what it takes to get the mission done," Witte told 10News. As you can imagine space is limited on board, nearly every inch is utilized, especially in the command area. But that's not to say the crew doesn't ever use their eyes. The periscope is still something the submarine crew utilizes regularly. "We may want to look at what other ships are doing we may want to try to observe other navy's activity stuff like that," Witte said. Everyone on board has a specialized skill, but because of the isolation that comes with being underwater for long periods of time, everyone has to take on multiple roles. When it's time to eat, the culinary specialists use the limited supply of ingredients to make every meal and also bake things like fresh bread and cookies pretty often. "We don't carry a lot of pre-made bread because it takes up too much room so a lot of our bread is made fresh a lot of our cookies are made fresh so its a pretty good," Witte explained. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- The owner of MetroFlex Gym in Oceanside said he is now in compliance with San Diego County's public health order after refusing to close his doors for months.Lou Uridel fought back against the closure orders of all gyms and fitness centers in California, saying he would lose the business he worked so hard to build if he closed his doors. Uridel also said he provides wellness services that don't fall under the order.Friday, Uridel received a letter from Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, to immediately close.The letter states that MetroFlex Gym was operating indoors in violation of state and county public health orders.Uridel quickly moved some fitness equipment on the sidewalk outside of his gym and is now getting a permit from the City of Oceanside to expand and build a more extensive outdoor gym.He said he would be closed down until later this week while he gets it all squared away, but some services inside will continue."We have nutrition supplement store, food pickup services," he explained.Before Dr. Wooten's letter was sent, Oceanside Police visited Uridel's gym a few times to try to gain voluntary compliance with the public health order.Uridel tells 10News he received positive feedback about his gym's cleanliness, and he went above and beyond to ensure the safety of employees and members."We hired a virologist, and they said the biggest things were capacity, social distancing, and airflow. So that's what we focused on," he said.Uridel said he purchased a high quality disinfecting spray gun for ,000 and bought six industrial-grade fans to circulate the air while leaving front and back doors open at his gym.He said the gym was disinfected every hour, equipment was moved to allow for social distancing, and capacity was limited to 20 percent."I've had 38,100 visits since May 8th, we have ten trainers here, and we've not had one outbreak," he said. "It's just like a nail in our back to be treated like an egregious violator. I've had death threats. I have people calling me a mass murderer, irresponsible and selfish; I don't see myself as selfish for trying to provide employment for ten trainers and staff."Uridel said had he followed the closure orders from the beginning and closed down his gym, he would lose the business he worked so hard to build."You can't keep throwing us on life support and expecting us to stay around," he said. "Businesses aren't light switches; you can't turn us on and off."Uridel was cited back in May for refusing to shut down during the initial orders from the state. He has since hired a lawyer. 2614
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- When asked if his success is surreal, comedian Jo Koy said: "I earned it."Jo Koy, whose real name is Joseph Herbert, knew he wanted to be a comedian since the age of 11. He has been in the comedy scene since the late 1980s and said he "kept grinding." That hard work paid off as Koy is now getting ready to film his third Netflix special and performs to sold-out audiences across the country. Family has been a central theme in his routine, often talking about raising his teenage son and growing up with his Filipino mom. His son, now 16, is getting involved in helping dad refine his show. "He's an associate producer on [the Netflix special] 'Comin' in Hot.' He came up with my last joke... he's the one that told me to wear what I was wearing. That outfit, he picked it out," Koy said.Koy tells 10News his mom loves the attention, "My mom always wants more!" Koy said. When asked if there was enough diversity and inclusion in comedy, the half-Filipino artist he feels like the doors are now, "open and there's a lot more opportunity, but we still have a long way to go." He's not going to get much time to check out the sights in San Diego. He's focusing on work and putting on great shows at the Civic Theater this week. "I stay working, man! I'll stop working when I die! I'm always going to do stand-up," Koy said. "This is my passion. I'll be 80 and I'll be on stage... this is what I was born to do." SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez announced she will introduce two new housing bills in the state assembly this week.One of them aims to prohibit developers from separating affordable housing units from market rate units in the same building.The bill came in response to a fight last summer between Canadian developer, Pinnacle and Civic San Diego, the city agency that was responsible for overseeing design approval.Pinnacle had submitted plans for a building on 11th Avenue between A & B Streets. The main tower was 32 stories tall and would be available at market rates. The tower was attached to an eight-story building that would house 58 affordable units, in order to satisfy the density bonus granted to Pinnacle for this and two other projects in the area.But Civic San Diego rejected the plan on the grounds that the affordable housing units had a separate entrance and restricted access to amenities in the 32-story tower, including the pool.“We can’t create a system that allows developers to separate out folks,” said Gonzalez at a press conference on Monday.A draft summary of the bill, AB 2344, stated it will “prohibit the owner or agent of an owner from isolation the affordable housing units within that structure to a specific floor or area within the structure.”After Civic San Diego rejected the proposal from Pinnacle, the developer came back with a new plan that eliminated the eight-story affordable housing section entirely. That plan was also rejected by Civic San Diego.10News reached out to Pinnacle for a comment, but a lawyer said they could not say anything because the project “remains a subject of potential litigation.” 1687
