Call it a comeback!Venerable toy retailer Toys 'R' Us will be back as it opens its first new location in Paramus, New Jersey after closing all locations nationwide in 2018. The location will have a grand opening Saturday morning. A second location is slated to open on Dec. 7 in Houston. The stores are smaller than previous locations. The new, smaller stores will emphasize the latest, most popular toy products and brands, Toys 'R' Us said. Toys 'R' Us will face even steeper competition than it faced when it filed for bankruptcy. Stores such as Walmart and Target have expanded their toy selections, although Target has formed a digital partnership with Toys 'R' Us. “Toys“R”Us is built into the fabric of childhood and for more than 70 years has been the most trusted source for toys and play,” said Richard Barry, CEO at Tru Kids, the proud parent of the Toys“R”Us brand. “With the return of Toys“R”Us stores in the U.S., we are bringing a highly engaging, experience-driven retail destination that celebrates play and deepens the connection between the world’s best toy, play and entertainment brands and customers.”Toys 'R' Us officials call the two new locations "experimental."In October, the Toys 'R' Us website relaunched with games, action figures and a full selection of toys. The inventory comes from Target, which bolstered its toy selection following Toys 'R' Us ceasing operations in 2018.Ordering from Toys 'R' Us provides the same type of shopping experience as using Target's website. Those who have Target credit cards can make purchases through the Toys 'R' Us site. Also, customers can use Target's in-store pickup service.“Target’s leadership in toys, digital and fulfillment are an unbeatable platform for Toys“R”Us to reconnect with their fans while we introduce them to the ease and convenience of shopping at Target,” said Nikhil Nayar, senior vice president of merchandising, Target. “By applying our capabilities in a new way with Toys“R”Us, we can serve even more toy shoppers, drive new growth, and build on our toy leadership.”Justin Boggs is a writer for the E.W. As the number of American adults dying of cancer continues to decline, the number who are dying of heart disease is on the rise, according to a new report.Researchers at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics examined death certificates filed across the country from 1999 to 2017 for adults 45 to 64, documenting the number of deaths attributed to cancer and heart disease.Cancer deaths dropped 19% from 1999 to 2017 for those adults. Deaths due to heart disease dropped 22% between 1999 and 2011 but then increased a total of 4% by 2017, according to the report, published Wednesday in 650

Athletes at universities in California are one step closer to being able to profit off their likeness as sweeping legislation meant to neuter the NCAA's amateurism bylaws was approved by the state's Senate on Wednesday. Meanwhile on Wednesday, NCAA leaders sent a letter to California's Gov. Gavin Newsom to claim that the legislation is "harmful" and "unconstitutional." After House and Senate approval, the bill now sits on the governor's desk. The NCAA claims that the legislation would create an unequal playing field. "California Senate Bill 206 would upend that balance," the NCAA said in its letter to Newsom. "If the bill becomes law and California’s 58 NCAA schools are compelled to allow an unrestricted name, image and likeness scheme, it would erase the critical distinction between college and professional athletics and, because it gives those schools an unfair recruiting advantage, would result in them eventually being unable to compete in NCAA competitions. These outcomes are untenable and would negatively impact more than 24,000 California student-athletes across three divisions."The bill would allow student athletes to earn money off endorsements, autograph sessions and public appearances. The bill would not require colleges to pay athletes. The legislation was unanimously approved by both the House and Senate this week.Under current bylaws, even something as simple as someone buying lunch for a student athlete would be considered an improper benefit.Complicating matters for the NCAA, the legislation would prohibit the NCAA from banning teams in California from participating in intercollegiate competitions. That point could force the NCAA to either make dramatic changes to its bylaws or take the state of California to court. The legislation would be effective as of Jan. 1, 2023.In May, the NCAA announced the formation of a working group of college administrators. Their goal is to examine how to respond to legislation like the one put forth by California. Ohio State Director of Athletics Gene Smith said that the NCAA is not interested in having colleges directly paying student athletes.“While the formation of this group is an important step to confirming what we believe as an association, the group’s work will not result in paying students as employees,” Smith said. “That structure is contrary to the NCAA’s educational mission and will not be a part of this discussion.”The working group said in May it would provide an update in August, but so far, has not provided an update. While the NCAA, led by President Mark Emmert, and others are staunchly against paying athletes, college athletics is flushed with money, and its practitioners are handsomely compensated. In 2016, the NCAA and CBS came to an .8 billion, eight-year extension to air the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. In 2012, ESPN agreed to a .3 billion deal through 2026 to air the College Football Playoff. One of the NCAA leaders who signed the letter on Wednesday was Ohio State President Michael Drake. Ohio State's men's basketball coach is paid more than million a season. Ohio State's new head football coach is paid .6 million. The players are compensated with a college scholarship which generally includes room and board. A player who receives what the NCAA deems as an improper benefit, such as an endorsement deal or a free lunch, would be considered ineligible. There have been many instances of players breaking NCAA bylaws, causing teams to be disqualified from NCAA championships. The bill has not only received bipartisan support, it has garnered support from athletes, including Lakers forward LeBron James. 3651

As part of a series of tweets on Friday morning, President Donald Trump said that the government would be partially shut down for a "very long time" if the Senate does not vote in favor of a spending bill that allocates billion for a border wall with Mexico."The Democrats, whose votes we need in the Senate, will probably vote against Border Security and the Wall even though they know it is DESPERATELY NEEDED. If the Dems vote no, there will be a shutdown that will last for a very long time. People don’t want Open Borders and Crime!" Trump tweeted. The lame duck Republican-controlled House of Representatives approved a spending bill on Thursday evening that fully funds Trump's border wall. The vote passed 217-185 with no votes from Democrats. The bill is considered dead on arrival in the Senate, where the margin of Republicans to Democrats is currently 51-49. Sixty votes are needed to pass the spending bill.Trump also tweeted a call for the Senate to switched to the so-called "nuclear option": Changing the Senate rules to limit debate and allow budget laws to pass through the chamber with a simply majority as opposed to 60 votes.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has long been reluctant to deploy such an option for legislative options. The Senate passed a spending bill earlier this week that did not provide any funding for a border wall. After initially indicating he would sign the bill if it passed the House of Representatives, Trump backtracked on Thursday and announced he would only sign a bill the funded the government if it provided funds to build a border wall in its entirety. In a meeting with Democratic congressional leaders last week, President Trump took ownership of a potential government shutdown and 1757
