(KGTV) — Neighbors in a rural East County town are once again fighting the possible release of a sexually violent predator into their community.Currently, the Department of State Hospitals is considering Thomas Cornwell as the next new resident of the Jacumba Hot Springs area. Jacob says the individuals should, instead, be kept behind bars."As far as I'm concerned, they gave up their right to freedom when they preyed on our young and most vulnerable. They don't belong in any town. They belong behind bars," Jacob said in a statement.Since 2015, nine of 12 sexually violent predators in the county have been released into the East County. Five of 12 have violated the conditions of their release. Four have been returned to a state mental institution.Cornwell's release hasn't been finalized. His hearing is set for Dec. 14, where the public is welcomed to attend and comment. 1561

Just days after the mass shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, a makeshift memorial with flowers and stuffed animals continues to grow.But that’s not the only sign of support arriving in this small town east of San Antonio.Mary Beth Fisk is the CEO of a San Antonio-based counseling and education non-profit called The Ecumenical Center. She and her team have been on the ground since Sunday night to provide counseling to victims and family member, particularly children.“Everybody’s grief journey is unique to them,” Fisk said. “It’s important to have someone who’s trained to walk through this complicated grief process with these families.”Fisk was nearby near the makeshift memorial on Tuesday, around for anyone who may need to talk.While Fisk spends time next to the flowers at the corner outside the church, across the street on another corner Donna Watkins was setting up a table of stuffed animals she brought with her from her home in Corpus Christi.Watkins is with the Homicide Survivors Support Group. She says she lost her brother decades ago and that gives her a unique perspective from which to assist.“It’s the most traumatic, worst thing that a family can ever go through. There is no way that unless you have walked through their shoes that you know where they’re coming from.”Up the road about 15 miles is the small, one-room St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. One of its 27 congregants is Paula Reinecke.  They were still in church services in the nearby town of Adkins this Sunday when they heard the sirens heading to the scene in Sutherland Springs.Almost immediately, she and her husband, having both recently finished culinary school and having assisted in Hurricane Harvey at similar events, decided to put their skills to use.“In Texas, we barbecue,” Reinecke said. “It’s a comfort food here.”They—and their newly-formed organization they call “Smokin’ Angels BBQ Ministry"—are hosting a barbecue benefit event this Saturday on the grounds of the church. They posted about the event on Facebook Sunday night, and, as Reinecke said, overnight “it kind of exploded.”They’re already gotten hundreds of calls, texts, and Facebook messages with offers of money, barbecue pits, even a walk-in cooler for the weekend; not to mention they’ve already received over 3,000 pounds of pork.“Being Texans, we jump in and save each others’ backs. KEARNY, N.J. — An uninvited guest made its way into several New Jersey suburbs, creating quite a stir inside normally quiet areas.Police believe a 300-pound bear is roaming around communities and was most recently seen in North Arlington.It was likely the same bear that was spotted in Kearny. It's not clear how a black bear ended up in the middle of densely populated areas like Kearny — and Harrison, beforehand — but some New Jersey residents needed a second to get their bearings after spotting the furry animal."I haven't seen any here, this is the first time. Surprised me. Especially close to my house," said Ruben Martinez.He barely noticed that it had climbed up a tree in his own backyard around 1 p.m. Monday. That was until he heard some commotion outside."When I went outside, that's when I found out. I saw police in my driveway, that's how I found out. Plus, I see a lot of people outside," Martinez said.Harrison police said the bear was first spotted on Saturday at the local Walmart and by Red Bull Arena. Officers snapped a picture with their bare hands and posted it on social media, warning people to be on alert."We did get a call from the town of Kearny that there was a bear was in the neighborhood and police were looking for it,” said Herbert Ginbel, a local resident.Police asked residents to bear with them as they tried to capture the animal. They've requested an animal control unit and notified the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife."I just hope everything will work out all right, and as a deacon I pray that the bear will be ok, and it can be returned to the habitat that I belongs,” Ginbel said.It's estimated the bear weighs 300 pounds. KILLEEN, Texas - Homicide detectives in Killeen say they have arrested a Fort Hood soldier in connection to the 2019 homicide of 32-year-old Chelsea Cheatham.According to a police news report, Grafton was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with first-degree murder.Back on June 3, 2019, the Killeen Police Department responded to the Days Inn Hotel in Killeen, where they located the victim, 32-year-old Cheatham. On September 2, 2020, the Texas Rangers informed KPD about the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) Program and the possibility of utilizing advanced DNA testing to help solve this case.After reviewing the investigation, the Texas Rangers and KPD identified 20-year-old Cory Grafton, a soldier from Fort Hood, as a possible suspect.Investigators interviewed Grafton about Cheatham’s death and collected a sample of his DNA. One of Grafton’s co-workers provided a statement to police that Grafton confessed to him about killing Cheatham.Investigators expedited the DNA test on Grafton’s sample, and on Nov. 3, the test results confirmed Grafton’s DNA matched the DNA found at the crime scene.
