Wimbledon has been canceled for the first time since World War II because of the coronavirus pandemic. The All England Club announced after an emergency meeting that the oldest Grand Slam tournament in tennis would not be held in 2020. Wimbledon was scheduled to be played on the outskirts of London from June 29 to July 12. "Following a series of detailed deliberations on all of the above, it is the Committee of Management’s view that cancellation of The Championships is the best decision in the interests of public health, and that being able to provide certainty by taking this decision now, rather than in several weeks, is important for everyone involved in tennis and The Championships," the club said in a statement Wednesday. The club added tickets will be refunded, and fans will be given the opportunity to purchase tickets for the same day and court during the 2021 tournament. The club also said it is in the process of developing a plan to support "those who rely on The Championship" for financial support, including staffers and players. The club did not go into specifics.Wimbledon now joins the growing list of sports events scrapped in 2020 because of the COVID-19 outbreak. That includes the Tokyo Olympics, the NCAA men's and women's college basketball tournaments and the European soccer championship. The last time Wimbledon was called off was 1945. 1384
Video games allow us to let go and play in someone else's world for a while. At the Smithsonian American Art Museum's recent video game convention, one game is getting a lot of attention for combining beautiful graphics with the ugliness of war. The game is called Brukel and it tells the story of World War II through the eyes of someone who lived it.“This whole thing is obviously a labor of love,” one gamer said of Brukel. “It’s obviously very personal to the creator.”The creator is Bob DeSchutter, an award-winning video game developer and a college professor at Miami University. “In the game, you go in there and you have your cellphone with you,” he says. “You can take pictures of everything, and if you take pictures of an object, you hear my grandma talk about it.”De Schutter traveled to Belgium to have his 93-year-old grandmother, Bie Verlinden, narrate this video game. Verlinden is also the game’s hero, and players shoot a camera instead of a gun. It took De Schutter five years of coding to create Brukel, and the finished product has both his critics' and grandma’s approval.“She’s like, ‘Oh, wow! This looks exactly the way it was,’” De Schutter says about his grandmother’s reaction to the video game. “I’m obviously very happy about that.”The game is also gaining positive attention among parents, who say they are happy to have their children play this game. “It’s a different spin from Fortnite, from Madden and all the other games that they play,” says parent Shaunice Morris. “Now, they’re able to play the game and have fun playing the video game, but also learn while in the process.”It's learning that includes life lessons that span countries and cultures, coming from a woman who lived through war and is now able to share her stories across generations through gaming. 1812

Two officers in Honolulu have been shot and killed Sunday, Hawai'i Gov. David Ige confirmed. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that officers were responding to an assault call near the base of Diamond Head when they encountered a male with a firearm, who then opened fire, striking two officers. The neighborhood where the shooting occurred is at the far end of the Waikiki Beach between the Honolulu Zoo and the famed Diamond Head State Monument. The area would be packed with tourists and locals, especially on a weekend. A home the suspected gunman was believed to be inside has been engulfed by flames. "As we express our condolences to their families, friends and colleagues, let us also come together to help and support those who have been forever changed by this tragedy," Ige said.Footage from news cameras show that multiple homes were on fire. WASHINGTON – No cramped leg space and blah entertainment in coach for Bei Bei, the giant panda at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in DC. He's off to China this week -- and he's traveling in style. As if flying in his own Boeing 777F private plane dubbed the Panda Express is not enough, handlers will be feeding him his favorite treats during the trip. And the zoo is asking for song recommendations for a mixed tape for the long trip -- just change the title of the original from "baby" to "Bei Bei.""Bei Bei, It's You," and "Bei Bei, Love" were just a few of the suggestions so far.Bei Bei was born at the zoo in 2015, and an agreement with China stipulates that all cubs born at the zoo must move to China at age 4, the zoo said on its 749
