SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The family of a Navy sailor nearly killed in Syria is starting the new year with one less challenge.Over a year ago Navy EOD Tech Kenton Stacy was left paralyzed after an IED explosion. As Stacy was recovering in San Diego, renters were destroying the family’s Virginia home. “Just with everything we’re going through, it added stress. I just couldn’t believe how someone could damage our home and be okay with it,” said Kenton’s wife Lindsey. The home reeked of cigarettes, and the carpet, walls, and blinds were destroyed. When the EOD community in Virginia learned what happened in November they began to make repairs on the home.Julie Fish, a real estate agent with Signature Realty Select, also stepped in to help, taking over as the realtor. After reaching out for more help, people around the country offered money, time, services and resources. “These guys are...it’s like a brotherhood, there’s nothing they wouldn’t do for one another, and I like to think the wives are the same way,” said Fish, whose husband is also a Navy EOD Tech. Less than two months later, the home looks brand new and is on the market. “Very blessed that they just took that burden off of us, one less thing that we had to worry about, stress out about, and we just can’t thank everyone enough,” said Lindsey.Anyone interested in purchase the Virginia house can learn more about it here. 1396

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Supporters of labor unions rallied across the country on Saturday ahead of a Supreme Court case that could effect how unions collect agency fees. One was held in downtown San Diego outside the California Democratic Convention, where hundreds of union supporters gathered for the “Working People’s Day of Action” event. Demonstrators were supporting the union AFSCME, which is engaged in a court battle that has made its way to the Supreme Court. In Janus v. AFSCME, the Supreme Court will decide whether it is legal for unions, which often donate to political causes, to compel members to agency fees. Those fees are collected by unions from employees who have opted not to join the union but still benefit from collective bargaining. The plaintiff, Mark Janus, has argued it violates his first amendment rights to pay fees to an organization that he disagrees with politically. A ruling in his favor could have wide-reaching effects on public sector labor unions around the country, argues famed labor organizer, Dolores Huerta. “That is going to be very devastating to our unions here in California,” said Huerta, if the court sides with Janus. 1213

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The first new hospital tower in 40 years in the South Bay could have a major impact addressing a shortage of beds in the region, officials say. Sharp Health Care is set to open its 106 bed Ocean View Tower this week in central Chula Vista. It is adjacent to the 243 bed Sharp Chula Vista original tower, which has seen an overflow due to a growing South Bay with too much demand for health care. "There's about 4,000 new homes in this area that have been built, so more and more we are going to have to provide health care for that population," said Pablo Velez, the hospital's chief executive. While the South Bay has experienced rapid growth, most of the new hospitals have been constructed in North San Diego, where there are higher paying patients, Velez said. At an open house Saturday, more than one thousand South Bay residents got a first look inside the hospital. Each room will be private, with big screen high definition televisions, large bathrooms, USB ports in beds, and local art. The hospital boasts a top floor cafeteria and large family waiting rooms. "I always go to Sharp, and my dad already knows the doctors here and the nurses because he's been in and out a lot of times since early last year," said Cesar Gonzales, an Eastlake resident who came to the open house with his 92-year-old father, a Sharp Chula Vista patient. The hospital cost 4 million to build. Construction began in November 2016. 1452

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a YouTube star who drove his McLaren the wrong way on the 805 last year, killing a mom and her daughter, are suing the City of San Diego, County of San Diego, and the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT).The lawsuit claims the “horrific and tragic event” was entirely preventable.Eighteen-year-old Trevor Heitmann, known as McSkillet, drove his McLaren the wrong way on the freeway in August 2018, killing Aileen Pizarro and her 12-year-old daughter Aryana. The sports car collided with the family's SUV, which burst into flames.RELATED: Autopsy details mental state of McSkillet before deadly crash on Interstate 805 in San DiegoIn the lawsuit Heitmann's family claims "SDPD was warned by Plaintiff's on the day of, but before his death, that Trevor intended to drive his McLaren at a high rate of speed in the wrong direction on a public roadway, under the delusion that he (Trevor) could drive through vehicles traveling in the opposite direction without incident."Worried about their sons' dangerous intentions and fearing for his well-being, as well as the safety of others, Dr. Mary Rusher, a board-certified psychiatrist, called 911 and made a 5150 request for a psychiatric hold, the lawsuit alleges. The lawsuit claims, "Defendants' purported PERT response team conducted either or both no assessment or the wrong assessment of the mental health status of Plaintiffs' son Trevor, pursuant to and under California Welfare and Institutions Code 5150."RELATED: YouTuber's parents requested psychiatric evaluation before deadly I-805 crashIt alleges, defendants also failed and refused requests to take Heitmann into protective detention to transport him to a designated evaluation and treatment facility."As a consequence, and despite Plaintiffs' attempts to ensure their son's safety and the safety of others by blocking the driveway of their residents, Trevor later that day left his residence and drive the McLaren to the Interstate 805 Freeway where he was killed in the beforementioned collision, which also tragically took the lives of the Pizarros."A spokesman for the County of San Diego told 10News they couldn't comment.RELATED: Son remembers mother and sister after release of driver's autopsy in deadly 805 crashAs of this writing, officials with the City of San Diego and PERT have not responded to 10News requests for comment. This is the third lawsuit filed regarding the 2018 crash. Two other lawsuits were filed by family members of the mother and daughter killed in the crash. 2545
