NANJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua)-- China and Japan have the opportunity to further develop their relationship through cooperation in a wide range of areas, an advisory panel on China-Japan relations said here Tuesday."Bilateral ties have an opportunity to develop as the two governments attach great importance to bilateral ties and are committed to long-term, stable, friendly, and cooperative relations," the fifth 21st Century Committee for China-Japan Friendship said after their first meeting.The committee, an advisory panel to both nations' governments, convened a three-day meeting in China beginning Sunday to discuss various aspects of China-Japan relations and to provide suggestions to the two governments."Members have discussed bilateral cooperation from a strategic point of view and have reached a fruitful outcome," the Chinese chair of the panel, Tang Jiaxuan, said.The committee agreed China and Japan should aim for cooperation in the post-financial crisis world and step up partnership in environmental protection and low-carbon business. Chinese members proposed building a recycling economic zone in Caofeidian, in north China's Hebei province.Telecommunications, bio-medicine, new materials and clean-fuel vehicles are also fields in which the two sides can work together.Another field for cooperation is culture, the panel said, stressing the importance of exchanges between media professionals and intellectuals in the two countries.Chinese members hoped visa procedures to enter Japan will be further simplified, young writers will have more opportunity for exchange, and that an arts festival on Buddhism is established.The committee suggested cooperation in Asian integration, including the building of a financial security network and speeding up research on the setting up of a free trade zone covering China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea."Japan is willing to work with China to strengthen mutual cooperation in various fields and improve understanding between peoples of the two countries," said chair of the Japanese side, Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) president Taizo Nishimuro

XI'AN, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- A high-speed railway linking central China city Zhengzhou and northwestern city Xi'an, went into operation Saturday.The 505-km Zhengzhou-Xi'an high-speed railway, the first of its kind in central and western China, cut the travel time between the two cities from former more than six hours to less than two hours, said local railway authorities Saturday.The first train left Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, at 10:50 a.m. and arrived at Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province, at 1:15 p.m., said Long Jing, head of the Xi'an Railway Bureau. With a speed of 350 kilometers per hour, the high-speed Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train coded G2004 is about to leave Xi'an for Zhengzhou in Xi'an Railway Station, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, on Feb. 6, 2010.The train traveled at 350 kilometers per hour, said Long. A total of 14 trains would be traveling between Zhengzhou and Xi'an everyday, said Long.The first train from Zhengzhou to Xi'an departed from Zhengzhou at 11:25 a.m. and arrived at Xi'an at 2:01 p.m., said Niu Jianfeng, spokesman of the Zhengzhou Railway Bureau.The Zhengzhou-Xi'an high-speed railway, included in the country's "Mid- and long-term railway network plan", has been built since Sept. 25, 2005, with a total investment of about 35.31 billion yuan (5.17 billion U.S. dollars), said Niu. With a speed of 350 kilometers per hour, a high-speed Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train is on test operation en route from Xi'an to Zhengzhou, in Tongguan, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, on Feb. 4, 2010."The Zhengzhou-Xi'an high-speed railway will meet the growing demand of of passenger and cargo transportation in central and western China, and help promote local development," said Wang Yongping, spokesman of the Ministry of Railways.Henan is one of the major grain producers of China and an emerging economic and industrial powerhouse. This most populous province in China is also a major tourist attraction with a great number of sites of historical and cultural interests. Shaanxi boasts rich cultural resources and is endowed with rich natural resources such as coal, petroluem, and natural gas.The country's total railway coverage will be more than 110,000 kilometers by 2012 and 120,000 kilometers by 2020, according to the "Mid- and long-term railway network plan"."By 2012, it will take less than eight hours to travel by train from Beijing to most provincial capitals in China," said Long.

  

BEIJING, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi clarified China's stance on Internet management and emphasized Internet is open and active in China when meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a spokesman of China's Foreign Ministry said Friday.Spokesman Ma Zhaoxu made the remarks in response to a question on whether Yang and Clinton discussed the Google case during their meeting on the sidelines of an international conference on Afghanistan in London."Yang stressed that Internet in China is open and active," said Ma.Chinese people enjoyed adequate freedom of speech in line with the law and have access to various kinds of information, which is an important reason why Chinese people unswervingly follow the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, Ma said."Yang said promoting the development of the Internet is our consistent policy," said Ma.Ma added that China has its own domestic situation and cultural tradition, and it accords with the world's common practice that China regulates the Internet according to its laws and policies."China advocates severely fighting against hacking through beefing up international cooperation, so as to protect Internet safety and citizens' privacy in accordance with the law," Ma said.According to the Internet Society of China, the number of cyber attacks from abroad saw a year-on-year increase of 148 percent in 2008.
