SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans presented five renderings of possible suicide barriers for the San Diego-Coronado Bridge.More than 400 people have killed themselves by jumping from the bridge since it was opened in 1969, making it the second deadliest suicide bridge in the nation behind San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.The possible suicide barriers include a large net underneath the bridge similar to the one to be put on the Golden Gate Bridge, three types of fencing, or 18-inch spikes on top of the existing barriers.Caltrans said one design will be chosen in Spring 2018.They said it will take several years to build the barrier because they need to have environmental impact studies done and get funding for it.  752

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities responded to a riot Friday night at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in Otay Mesa that left five people injured, including at least one with serious injuries.Cal Fire San Diego said about 100 inmates were in the prison yard when a fight broke out around 8 p.m. California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said Saturday that number was closer to 80 inmates.CDCR said officers gave multiple orders to stop fighting, before using several rounds of less-than-lethal force to stop the incident.Four inmate-made weapons were recovered, CDCR said.Five inmates were injured and had to be transported outside the prison for treatment, for injuries including puncture wounds, cuts, and bruises to the head, neck, and torso areas, CDCR says. Cal Fire had previously reported that six inmates were transferred from the scene.One of those inmates suffering from puncture wounds was in critical condition. Three inmates were in fair condition and the fifth was treated and returned to prison, CDCR said.No prison staff members were injured.The facility canceled visitation for Facility A Saturday and Sunday in light of the riot. 1175

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Days before the sale of a Del Cerro home was scheduled to close, thieves went on a shopping spree inside the house.In the 5600 block of Genoa Drive, neighbors were jolted by something unexpected."It's shocking because things like that don't happen in our neighborhood," said Diane Cozey.On Wednesday morning, at a three-bedroom, three-bath home that was well into escrow, a disturbing discovery was made by the staging company arriving to collect their inventory. The front door had been left ajar. "Just dismayed that someone could do something like this," said homeowner Randy Arciniega.Arciniega says his home was raided. The furniture, installed lighting, and rugs remained, but just about everything else was gone: towels, pillows, blankets, artwork, lamps, plants and other decor. Also missing was the refrigerator."The only thing that bothered me more is so much destruction happened," said Arciniega.Arcieniega says his beautiful floors were carved up as the burglars dragged the fridge out of the home. The total loss? About ,500.He tells 10News the lockbox was attached to some PVC piping, which was found damaged. The thieves apparently yanked it off the lockbox and somehow got inside it to use the key. Arcieniega says the biggest mistake he made was shutting down the alarm, because so many people were going in and out of the home. He believes the thieves were likely headed back for the rest of the inventory. The washer had been moved from the laundry room to the garage.The break-in happened sometimes between Saturday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Arciniega covered the costs of the refrigerator and floor damage. The sale of the home is expected to close Monday. 1716

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Birch Aquarium has opened a new exhibit showcasing one of the sea's most beautiful creatures in one of the world's largest habitats for the animal.The aquarium's new permanent exhibition "Seadragons and Seahorses" featuring Weedy and Leafy seadragons and several species of seahorses and pipefish.At the center of the exhibit will sit one of the world's largest seadragon habitats in the world, measuring 18 feet wide, 9 feet tall and containing 5,375 gallons of water, according to the aquarium.The exhibit takes guests into the lives of seadragons and seahorses, showcasing the sea life in a habitat designed to create the ideal environment for them to breed. Guests will learn how to observe the animals like scientists, catch distinguishing features, and identify courting and mating behaviors.The exhibit also gives visitors a peek into the Birch Aquariums Husbandry Team working to ensure the species thrives. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Community leaders are reacting to this week's move by state lawmakers to let voters decide in November whether to reinstate affirmative action.“It’s been a long, hard road and now we can actually see some light at the end of the tunnel,” said San Diego NAACP President Francine Maxwell on Thursday afternoon. It follows Wednesday's news that California lawmakers approved a proposal to repeal the 25-year-old law that bans looking at race, sex, ethnicity, color or national origin in college admissions, contracting and public employment.“The NAACP San Diego branch is elated that it was a 30-10 vote. Two-thirds majority said that things have to change and we're headed to November,” she added.Assemblymember Shirley Weber (D-San Diego) authored the bill and asked for support on ACA 5, which lets voters decide whether to reinstate affirmative action by repealing Prop 209.“The ongoing pandemic as well as recent tragedies of police violence is forcing Californians to acknowledge the deep-seated inequality and far-reaching institutional failures that show that race and gender still matters,” she told her colleagues this week.“African Americans have been at the bottom for over 401 years. Affirmative action was an opportunity so they could open the door to walk into colleges, to [have] the opportunity of economics, to change the narrative of their family,” Maxwell told ABC10 News.Republican Assembly candidate June Cutter from San Diego opposes the return of affirmative action. Far from being colorblind, the bill has set up barriers to women and minorities to share in the economic life of California.
