SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Chargers dramatic win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday clinched the team its first appearance in the NFL Playoffs since 2013.Only this time, the Bolts are representing Los Angeles, not San Diego. “The players deserve it,” said San Diegan John Velarde. “The Spanoses? No.”Team owner Dean Spanos moved the team to Los Angeles after the 2016 season, after voters rejected the team’s bid for a downtown San Diego stadium. The move prompted some fans to disavow the Chargers forever, and it was easy the first year — the Bolts lost their first four games before battling back to finish 9-7. RELATED: Poll: As Chargers bolt to playoffs, San Diegans sit split on supportBut this season, the team’s second in LA, has been much different. The Chargers are 11-3, and are tied with Kansas City for the best record in the AFC. There is a chance that the Chargers could have home-field advantage in the playoffs. “You feel a lot of mixed emotions, like excitement for who’s left on the team,” said Tim Hoover, a native San Diegan. “But at the same time it’s kind of like, they’re kind of dead to the world.”Still, there are die-hard Charger fans in San Diego. An estimated 250 packed into Cali Comfort Barbecue in Spring Valley to watch Thursday's 29-28, come-from-behind victory over the Chiefs. Owner Shawn Walchef, wearing a Chargers had and jacket, said he and many are sticking by the team.“It hurt that we couldn’t get something done as a city, it hurt that the organization couldn’t figure something out,” he said. “What can we control? It’s things we like to be happy about. We love cheering on our time, we love interacting with other Charger fans and that’s something that we’re going to keep doing." 1736

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A female sea lion Monday wandered onto the streets of Point Loma, prompting spectators to gather and springing a rescue team into action.According to a passerby, the sea lion was spotted in the middle of Garrison Street around 4 p.m.According to crews, the sea lion would’ve had to cross Rosecrans Street to get to Garrison. Rescuers from SeaWorld responded to the scene, adding that the sea lion appears health and at a normal body weight, but they’ll need to further examine her to learn more.SeaWorld also said it’s unusual for a sea lion to wander that far away from the bay, but the animals have been found on porches, inside hotels and on driveways. 683

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A former longtime San Diego Zoo biologist has pleaded guilty to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the iconic zoo.Matthew John Anderson, 49, of Ramona, Calif., admitted to stealing more than 6,000 through bogus vendor invoices between December 2008 and October 2016, according to the Office of the U.S. Attorney Southern District of California.Investigators say Anderson created 35 fake invoices billing the San Diego Zoo for various payments from purported vendors. The zoo paid the invoices to third parties that then gave the bulk of the payment to Anderson. In some cases, the payments went directly to accounts controlled by Anderson.RELATED: Hillcrest store owner is getting her stolen jade Buddha statue backAnderson worked for more than 17 years for the zoo, starting as a research fellow and going on to serve as the Director of Behavioral Biology for the zoo's Conservation Research. He was fired in 2017.“When an employee is elevated to a position of leadership, it is a sign of that company’s trust in the integrity and honesty of that person,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Scott Brunner. “When an employee violates that trust and abuses their position to defraud and steal money for personal benefit, the FBI stands ready to hold them accountable.”Anderson has been charged with theft or conversion concerning programs receiving federal funds. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a 0,000 fine. He's scheduled to be sentenced on June 8. 1514

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A family wants the Governor of California to keep the man who murdered three San Diego State professors behind bars. Frederick Davidson was sent to prison in 1997 for three consecutive life sentences without parole after he gunned down his three engineering professors Chen Liang, Preston Lowry, and Constantinos Lyrintzis. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office recently notified the victims’ families that Davidson applied for executive clemency.“Just asking for clemency?  Out of what?  On what grounds?” asked a distraught Esther Alonso, Lyrintzis’ sister-in-law.  Lyrintzis was married to her sister, Deana Alonso, and the couple had a young daughter.A District Attorney’s Office spokesman said the DA’s office already filed a letter opposing Davidson’s request.Alonso told 10News she could not believe Davidson would request clemency.  Alonso said the family agreed to not seek the death penalty in 1997 if Davidson agreed to plead guilty and go to prison for life without parole.“How can they tell them 20 years later that the deaths of their husbands and their fathers…that this guy has more rights than they do?” asked Alonso, a professor at Southwestern College. “I don’t understand a system where that is even possible.”Alonso created a Change.org petition directed at Governor Jerry Brown asking him to deny Davidson’s request. The DA’s spokesman said their office opposed more than 50 clemency requests last year and none of those requests were granted.  The spokesman added there is no deadline for Governor Brown to respond or send it to a hearing. 1627

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Cajon Valley School District worker crossed into oncoming traffic in his work truck Friday morning, striking a car with a mother and child inside, California Highway Patrol officers said. The crash happened about 10:30 a.m. on Avocado Blvd. north of Challenge Blvd. in the Rancho San Diego area, according to the CHP. Officers say the 55-year-old CVSD employee was driving a Ford pickup with a trailer and made an unsafe left turn movement into oncoming traffic. The truck came into the path of a Ford Fusion and the vehicles crashed head-on. The impact sent both vehicles into the front yard of a home. “Initial indications are that the child safety seat which contained the infant was not properly installed and was found by responding emergency personnel face down on the rear floorboard of the Ford Fusion,” CHP officers said. Both drivers had major injuries but are expected to survive. The infant’s injuries are unknown but did not to be serious, officers said. Drugs and alcohol are not factors in the crash. 1044
