Sorrento Therapeutics is working on several projects that they believe could lead to viable vaccines or treatments. One of them was announced on Monday. Sorrento Therapeutics said it was partnering with Boston-based Smartpharm to create a gene-encoded antibody vaccine. “In the effort to more quickly resolve the global COVID-19 crisis, our company has initiated a rapidly accelerated program for the identification of potent neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus antigens that may be used for either treatment or prophylaxis,” said Henry Ji, CEO of Sorrento Therapeutics. Sorrento Therapeutics is also working on another vaccine called the I-Cell project. That vaccine uses a decoy virus to activate a person’s immune system to train it to attack the real virus. It’s also developing a protein called COVIDTRAP that can bind to the receptors on the coronavirus, thus blocking it from being able to bind to the receptors on healthy human cells. If proven succesful, it could be used as a treatment or preventative measure.How long will it take for them to be ready?“That all depends on what leeway the FDA gives us,” said Mark Brunswick, Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs at Sorrento Therapeutics. Spring Valley, Calif. (KGTV) - The new Homeless Assistance Resource Team is expanding to battle the growing homeless population, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. The program started in June. Their goal is to connect homeless people with services, like getting a driver's license, food stamps, or healthcare."It's not new to the sheriff's department, but having three full time deputies assigned to the mission is new." Deputy Matthew Faddis said they accompany the myriad of service agencies on their mission into obscure parts of town known to house homeless people.Faddis said it was to ensure the social workers, nurses and other workers' safety, and make them feel comfortable to do their job.Deputy Faddis said the department is working to help more people, "starting out doing this about once a week, we hope to expand that and eventually get the full time team doing this every single day."In Spring Valley, 10News walked with the team down into a concrete canal covered in graffiti. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which is based in Atlanta, vacated a previous panel's 2-1 decision rejecting an effort to undo an agreement federal prosecutors made with Epstein more than a decade ago. According to a report from the Miami Herald, it was revealed that former Labor Secretary Alex Acosta, who resigned from his post last July, cut a deal with Epstein that kept him out of prison when he was a federal prosecutor for the Southern District of Florida.Instead of facing federal charges, Epstein was allowed to plead guilty to lesser state crimes and served a short jail sentence.
