SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border officials seized more than 10 tons of marijuana hidden behind a cargo shipment at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry this week.At about 9 a.m. Monday, an agent with U.S. Customs and Border Protection was inspecting a truck with a manifested shipment of "plastic garment hangers." The vehicle was referred to a secondary inspection where an x-ray machines would continue the inspection.During the secondary inspection, officers detected an anomaly which prompted another examination this time with a canine. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Awaken Church continues to hold indoors services, despite orders from San Diego County to close all indoor religious services due to COVID-19 restrictions.According to the San Diego County website, three of the Awaken Church locations have received cease and desist orders. The location at 7620 Balboa Ave. received a cease and desist order July 17, 2020; the Carlsbad location received one Nov. 16, 2020; and the Chula Vista location received one Nov. 19, 2020.RELATED: Churches pushing back against purple tier restrictionsIn addition, San Diego County put out a notice that anyone who went to the location at 7620 Balboa Ave. between Nov. 15 and Nov. 22 needs to quarantine for two weeks because of a community outbreak. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Call them the ghosts of summer vacations past: two mostly empty cruise ships remain anchored off the coast of San Diego, waiting for the green light to resume operations as the nation grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic.Celebrity’s Millennium and Eclipse cruise ships have been anchored in San Diego since March, when the CDC suspended cruise ship sailings around the country March 14. That order has been extended to at least July 24.Several cruise ship companies have announced voluntary delays until September.After thousands of passengers disembarked from the Eclipse in late March, test results came back showing several passengers were COVID-19 positive.More than a month later, in May, 63 passengers remained quarantined on the Eclipse with hundreds of crew members.A third ship, the Disney Wonder, was anchored in San Diego for the first few months of the pandemic, but departed May 30, said Brianne Page, a public information officer for the Port of San Diego.For now, the Millennium and Eclipse are ghosts of their former selves. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Commuters trying to avoid traffic along the 56 in Carmel Valley are using side streets, worrying people who live in the Pacific Highlands Ranch neighborhood."It's the worst between 7:30 and 8:30 in the morning," says longtime resident Randy M. She lives in the Portico West part of the development and says she sees cars going 50-60 miles an hour down her block every day."Sometimes, if I'm walking my dog, they'll almost run me over," she says. "So I have to be really careful."The traffic is coming from State Route 56. When that backs up, people will use Carmel Valley Road as an alternative. But that gets jammed as well, leading some drivers to turn into the neighborhood and use side streets and alleys.Making traffic worse, a half dozen schools are in the area (see map above) and all of them start between 8 and 8:40 am."It's a nightmare," says Naz Nahani, who drives her daughter to Pacific Trails Middle School every morning."When you reach this area, you're pretty much at a stand still," she says.The Carmel Valley Planning Board has held a pair of meetings about the issue. Chairman Frisco White says they're trying to find a solution."If the streets are private, we may look into blocking them from traffic during the morning," he says. They've also looked into placing no turn signs on Carmel Valley Road to discourage drivers from entering the neighborhood.Another option that White has heard would be to ask the school districts to further stagger the start times, so the traffic will be spread out over a longer period of the morning.White says the problem may get worse before it gets better, as hundreds of new apartments and homes are being built in the area.Nahani thinks the city should add more lanes to SR-56 and to Carmel Valley Road."We're planning to move closer to the school because of this," she says. 1864
