One group is putting a unique twist on storytime, with the hopes of inspiring inclusion.The Salami Sisters don’t usually perform during the day. With full hair, makeup and dresses, the two started reading to children about six months ago at libraries.The stories read have themes about love, compassion and inclusion.The program is called Drag Queen Story Hour.Jonathan Hamilt brought the program to New York from San Francisco, and it has spread across the country.“It's one of the most attended story hours of our libraries,” says Hamilt. “Every time we go to a branch, librarians are like, ‘Wow! This has exceeded the number of any other program that we've had.’”As you might expect, Hamilt says the children come with questions, asking about their hair and real name.Some questions are more challenging than others.“Are you a boy or are you a girl? Why do you have a man's voice or why do you wear a dress?” says Hamilt of the questions the children ask.Hamilt says every answer and every story furthers their mission to instill tolerance and acceptance of everyone, and it's a message the parents are embracing.“I think it's very important to have diversity in kids programming, especially since a lot of drag shows aren't super kid-friendly,” says parent Maggie Beaumont.“Everybody accepts diversity, and I want my kid to experience it,” says another parent, Tomoko Shiina. “But at the same time, I'm also empowered by the atmosphere, as a parent and as a woman, as a person.”The Drag Queen Story Hour is not only a new perspective of storytime, but for many, it’s creating a new perspective of the world beyond it. 1644

(CNS) - Oceanside's police chief has called for an internal investigation into an arrest in which one officer used a stun gun to subdue a carjacking suspect, causing him to fall backward onto his head, before two other officers forcefully twisted him to lie facedown.Video of the Tuesday incident was captured on a witness' cellphone and shared on social media, according to Oceanside Police Department Chief Frank McCoy.Police officials Wednesday released an officer's body-worn camera footage of the arrest along with the cellphone video, plus an open letter by McCoy providing more details.Dispatchers received reports around 4 p.m. Tuesday that the man attempted to carjack several people at multiple locations in Oceanside's Mesa Margarita neighborhood while armed with a knife, McCoy wrote in the letter. The man appears to kick something on the ground -- possibly the knife he had dropped -- and then takes a few steps toward it while shouting at the officers.As this was happening, the officer in front of him can be seen taking several steps toward the man before using his stun gun. The man goes stiff and groans as he falls backward, hitting his head on the ground.The two officers behind him then rush in and grab him before forcefully turning him over onto his stomach. OCEANSIDE (KGTV) — Bob Walker has been an Oceanside resident for 32 years, “I used to take my children down here to this beach right here we would put our towels on the sand, walk out to the waters edge and paddle out and surf.” If you look at that same beach now, the sand has been washed away, “you do not see people using this beach and beach access whatsoever, we don’t have this beach any longer,” Walker tells 10News. He’s now co-founder of Save Oceanside Sand, a local group advocating for jetties to be built along the coast to help build back up beaches and maintain sand levels. They plan to propose a jetty at Tyson Street, Wisconsin Street, Buccaneer Beach and St. Malo. Walker tells 10News the jetties will work to retain the sand, similarly to what Newport Beach has done with theirs, “they’ve got they have a series of eight groins." Groins, also known as jetties, will help with the city’s annual dredging process. Vicki Casper has also lived in Oceanside for over two decades, familiar with the dredging process, she says more needs to be done, “I’ve watched the sand be pumped back on the beach when they do the dredging and a month later its gone again."The sand washes away with the southern swell, migrates toward La Jolla.
