It took a few hours for the news to be released, but by all indications, Ryan Newman is okay. NASCAR officials said Newman had non life-threatening injuries following a horrific crash at the end of the Daytona 500 on Monday.Newman is in serious condition after being transported to the hospital. As Newman approached the finish line of the Daytona 500 on Monday, he was set to win his first Daytona 500 in 12 years. But a nudge from behind sent Newman into the wall as his competitors crossed the finish line. The crash allowed Denny Hamlin to win his second straight Daytona 500. As Hamlin celebrated the win, attention quickly turned to Newman, whose car spun out of control and burst into flames. After Newman's car struck the wall and flipped, it was then struck at full speed by Corey LaJoie's vehicle, causing Newman's car to flip again. Emergency crews raced to rescue Newman following the stunning crash.The celebration for Hamlin was subdued following the race."I think we take for granted sometimes how safe the cars are," Hamlin said. "But No. 1, we're praying for Ryan. Worked really well with Ryan through this whole race, and obviously he got turned right there."Ryan Blaney, who came in second place, described his view of the incident. "We pushed Newman there to the lead, and then we got a push from the 11 (Danny Hamlin's car), and I made a move off 4 (Kevin Harvick's car) on Newman and he blocked it and I kind of went low and he blocked that, so then I was committed to just pushing him to the win and trying to have a Ford win it, and I don't know, we just got bumpers hooked up wrong and turned him," Blaney said. "I hope he's all right. Looked pretty good. Definitely was trying to push him to a win. I don't want to say those things happen. Judge Donald Oda sentenced Brooke Skylar Richardson to three years of basic supervision Friday for the charge of abuse of a corpse. INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — A new tool is emerging to battle the scour of overdose deaths that lead directly to the powerful synthetic drug, fentanyl.Drug users can now test to see whether the drug they are about to inject is in fact fentanyl.Lena Severance, 35, was battling a heroin addiction. She told her mother she could tell, if the illicit drugs she was taking, was fentanyl — by it's color. She was wrong.Dead wrong. That was April 28, 2018. Her death certificate provided the evidence that five different types of fentanyl was laced into the heroin she used.Lena's mother, Sherry McKay welcomes the availability of fentanyl test strips for users."If they can test it and see if that is in there or not, yeah, its gonna help. It's gonna give them the choice," McKay said. "Do I want to do this, and take the chance of dying? Or do I want to live and not do it?""It could save a lot of lives," she said.You can obtain Fentanyl strips through the Overdose Lifeline.A program that Justin Phillips founded in 2014, after her 20-year-old son Aaron, died from an opioid overdose."Individuals who do test their drugs are less likely to use the drugs. It’s a moment Donna Hopper will always remember but wishes she could forget.“He was just beating on the window,” she said. Eight years ago, Hopper shot and killed a man who was breaking into her home.Today, bullet holes still remain, serving as constant reminders of that night.“I don’t know why I haven’t taken them down,” she said. “I just turned my head and kind of shot in the air.”Hopper still keeps the .38 special handgun that she bought after her husband died, loaded and next to her bed.“It’s scary kind of looking at it because I’ve forgotten where the safety is,” she said. “I mean, I would have to look at it, and I don’t want to touch it.” Hopper, however, says she’s ready to pull the trigger again if need be because she believes that’s what saved her life that night. “If I had not had the gun ... in fact, when the police were here that night I told them, ‘I’m so sorry, I should have just had a baseball bat and whacked him on the head,' " Hopper said. "And they told me, 'He would have killed you before you got the first strike out. ' ” Across the country and in her hometown of Redding, California, Hopper was hailed as a hero for protecting her home and herself.“A gun in the hand of the right person at the right time at the right moment can save lives,” said Redding Police Captain Jon Poletski. “But guns can also be dangerous if they’re put into the hands of the wrong person at the wrong time in the wrong situation.”Poletski worked Hopper’s case back in 2011.He believes Hopper protected herself with a gun that night but says having a gun doesn’t guarantee somebody’s safety. Sometimes, it could be turned against them.“If you’re going to have a gun or you’re going to carry a gun, you obviously need to have the proper training,” Poletski said. “Just having a gun doesn’t make you safe.”Hopper, however, says having a gun saved her life. She added it gives her a better sense of security and that she knows how to use it. “My dad was a policeman all his life so he told me, ‘if you’re going to shoot a handgun, use two hands and wherever your fingers are pointing that’s where the gun will go,’ ” she said.Hopper added that she supports the right to bear arms — to an extent. “I’m keeping my gun and anybody else that needs theirs,” she said. “What I don’t believe in is people that have automatic weapons.”For now, Hopper says she’ll keep her revolver at her side. 2408
