Attorney General Bill Barr will not recuse himself from overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, the Justice Department announced Monday."Following General Barr's confirmation, senior career ethics officials advised that General Barr should not recuse himself from the Special Counsel's investigation. Consistent with that advice, General Barr has decided not to recuse," according to Justice Department spokesperson Kerri Kupec.Prior to his confirmation, Democrats had raised concerns about a 19-page memo Barr authored in June 2018 detailing why he believed President Donald Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey should not constitute obstruction of justice. Barr vowed to consult with ethics officials but did not make any pledge to recuse himself from the Russia probe. 855
An officer with the Los Angeles Police Department is under investigation after his body camera allegedly caught him fondling the body of a dead woman. The officer and his partner were responding to a call about a possible dead body in a residential unit, sources told the Los Angeles Times, which first reported the incident. The officers determined the woman was dead, and while one officer went to get something from the patrol car, the accused officer turned off his body-worn camera and allegedly fondled the deceased woman's breasts, LAPD officials told the LA Times.Though the camera was turned off before the incident, it was captured by the two-minute buffer on the device, the newspaper reported."The department is aware of the incident and an internal investigation has been launched," LAPD officer Jeff Lee said, adding that he cannot comment further on pending personnel matters.LAPD Assistant Chief Robert Arcos told the LA Times the recording was "very disturbing."A source familiar with the investigation said the incident happened a few weeks ago but was found in a random check of bodycam footage. He called the incident "way beyond the pale" and "unacceptable" and said co-workers of the accused in LAPD's Central Division are furious. The case has not been referred to the District Attorney's office since it is still under investigation. The newspaper reported that the officer, whose name was not released, was placed on leave."If this allegation is true, then the behavior exhibited by this officer is not only wrong, but extremely disturbing, and does not align with the values we, as police officers, hold dear and these values include respect and reverence for the deceased," the Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union representing the officer, said in a statement. "This behavior has no place in law enforcement." 1857
As the number of lung illness cases involving people who vape continues to grow, one city is telling people to stop using immediately. Now, vaping company Juul says it’s making it harder for younger people to buy their e-cigarettes.Sixteen people were hospitalized in Wisconsin with chemical pneumonia that doctors believe was caused by vaping. There have been 200 cases across the country.Despite the FDA declaring teen vaping as an epidemic, the Consumer Advocates for Smoke-Free Alternatives Association (CASAA) says vaping is still a better option than smoking."Flavorings and the base ingredients in e-liquid products made with nicotine are all alcohol base; those products don't cause this lipoid pneumonia,” says Alex Clark with CASAA.However, Clark says the problem causing these lung issues comes from users buying THC-filled cartridges from underground dealers.CASAA believes the black market manufacturers could be putting dangerous chemicals into illegal vaping products. This week, Juul’s CEO Kevin Burns told CBS This Morning these health reports are worrisome. The company announced it’s working with e-cigarette vendors to implement an ID verification system that prohibits cashiers from selling to underage shoppers and limits the amount customers can buy.Clark says he’s concerned more restriction on vaping products could lead to bigger problems. He things regulations could lead to underground market sales.Health departments and hospitals are continuing their research on legal vaping products to see if there is a link to lung-related issues.Meanwhile, Clark advises users to "purchase from legitimate retailers that you know and trust. I think the advice should be to stop buying from shady street dealers." 1739
