SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities publicly identified a man Thursday who was fatally shot by deputies when he allegedly advanced on them with a knife in his hand at an Alpine apartment complex.Patrol personnel were investigating a report of a man yelling and threatening to kill someone in the 2600 block of Alpine Boulevard when they got into the deadly confrontation with 31-year-old Daniel Ayala about 3 p.m. Monday, according to sheriff's officials.Ayala died at the scene. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - No charges were filed Wednesday against a 19-year-old man arrested along with three teenage girls for allegedly attacking and severely beating a 56-year-old man near Petco Park.The investigation is continuing into the case against 19-year-old Dominick Wells in connection with the attack that left Edward Leon Starland on life support, said Tanya Sierra, a spokeswoman for the District Attorney's Office.Three girls, ages 14, 15 and 17, also were arrested on suspicion of felony battery, said San Diego police Lt. Matt Dobbs. One of the girls had a detention hearing at Juvenile Court Wednesday.Starland was attacked about 2:10 p.m. last Sunday near the pedestrian bridge adjacent to Petco Park, Dobbs said.Police and paramedics found the victim unresponsive.Investigators determined the victim got into an argument with a group of teenagers and was knocked to the ground, then beaten, the lieutenant said.When witnesses started yelling at the attackers to stop, they fled east on Imperial Avenue, he said.Wells was arrested about 3:15 a.m. the next morning. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego firefighter who allegedly raped a 17- year-old girl was ordered Friday to stand trial on four felony sexual assault counts.Justin Curtis Price, 35, a fire engineer-paramedic who has been with the city public-safety agency for 10 years, was arrested in late April for the alleged Nov. 1, 2018, sexual encounter.Prosecutors allege Price had known the teen since she was about 9 or 10 years old. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A student pilot and a flight instructor were uninjured after a Cessna plane ran off the Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport runway Sunday and crashed through a fence, authorities said.The incident happened at about 1:15 p.m. at the airport on 3750 John J. Montgomery Drive, according to the San Diego Fire and Rescue Department.Montgomery Field and Kearny Villa Road were shut down. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Flames tore through a Mira Mesa home Wednesday afternoon, causing extensive damage, injuring a firefighter and displacing five residents.The blaze erupted for unknown reasons shortly before 2 p.m. in the 10100 block of Embassy Way, just west of Camino Ruiz, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported.All the occupants of the house were able to safely get outside prior to the arrival of emergency crews, according to SDFRD public affairs.Watch firefighters battle the fire below:Firefighters arrived to find the residence engulfed in flames.
