British officials have authorized a COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use, greenlighting the world’s first shot against the virus that’s backed by rigorous science and taking a major step toward eventually ending the pandemic. The go-ahead Wednesday for the vaccine developed by American drugmaker Pfizer and Germany’s BioNTech comes as the virus surges again in the United States and Europe, putting pressure on hospitals and morgues in some places and forcing new rounds of restrictions that have devastated economies. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency recommended the vaccine could be used after it reviewed the results of clinical trials that showed the vaccine was 95% effective overall — and that it also offered significant protection for older people.“Help is on its way,″ British Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the BBC. “We now have a vaccine. We’re the first country in the world to have one formally clinically authorized but, between now and then, we’ve got to hold on, we’ve got to hold our resolve.”Hancock later added that the country expects to receive the first shipment of 800,000 doses “within days″ and will begin distributing shots soon afterward.According to The Associated Press, England will first distribute the vaccine to people over the age of 80, people in long-term care facilities and health care workers. Bill Cosby's sentencing hearing is set for September 24 and 25, according to a court order from Judge Steven O'Neill.Cosby was found guilty last month of three counts of aggravated indecent assault for drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand at his home in a Philadelphia suburb in 2004.The 80-year-old comedian faces up to 10 years in prison on each count, although the actual sentence is likely to be much shorter."He was convicted of three counts of (indecent assault), so technically that would be up to 30 years," Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele said after the verdict. "However, we have to look at a merger of those counts to determine what the final maximum will be."Some legal experts have said they do not think Cosby will spend any time behind bars. His defense team has said it will appeal the guilty verdict, and it is possible that O'Neill will allow Cosby to remain on house arrest until that appeal is resolved.For now, Cosby is not permitted to leave his Pennsylvania home. BARNEGAT LIGHTHOUSE STATE PARK, N.J. — A dead whale is sitting on a New Jersey state park beach after a Christmas storm blew through the northeast.The humpback whale is near Barnegat Lighthouse State Park in Ocean County. It is unclear at this time how the roughly 20-foot-long whale died, according to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, a marine animal focused organization that responded to the whale Saturday. They said it could have been hit by a boat or something else during the storm, or died from contracting a disease. In addition to coming ashore on a holiday weekend, when few state employees are working, the below-freezing temperatures are also delaying the whale’s removal.“The whale’s too frozen,” Bob Schoelkopf, the director of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center said. “We can’t even cut into the blubber, it’s too thick and frozen.”Schoelkopf believes the dead whale was washed ashore on Christmas Eve, then taken back out to sea on Christmas as a large storm came through, and then came back ashore Saturday.Anyone visiting the area should stay clear, Schoelkopf said, because of the possibility for diseases to be in the carcass.Whale watching boats had spotted the whale alive earlier this year in Sandy Hook bay, where it had been photographed feeding, Schoelkopf said.In September, a different humpback whale was found dead off the Jersey Shore after being entangled.
