SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials reported a record 1,546 COVID-19 infections today, the 14th consecutive day that more than 600 new cases were reported, along with 16 additional deaths. The county's coronavirus death toll now stands at 984, and the cumulative case total rose to 74,361.The previous one-day case record was last Saturday, when 1,478 new COVID-19 cases were logged, topping the previous record of 1,091 set Friday. On Sunday, 939 new cases were reported.San Diego County fell deeper into the most restrictive purple tier of the state's four-tiered reopening plan Tuesday with an unadjusted 21.5 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population. Even with an adjusted rate of 13.1 per 100,000 due to significant testing increases by local health authorities, that number far exceeds the strictest tier's baseline of seven daily cases per 100,000.A total of 17,329 tests were reported Tuesday and 9% of those came back positive, raising the 14-day rolling average of positive tests to 5.3%.The number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 continues to rise, with 518 hospitalized in the county and 151 in intensive care, more than double the numbers of a month ago.Of the total number of cases in the county Tuesday, 4,435 -- 6% -- have required hospitalization and 1,002 patients -- 1.3% of all cases -- had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.A total of 15 new community outbreaks were confirmed Tuesday. Over the previous seven days, 73 community outbreaks were confirmed. A community outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days.San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten advised caution as the Thanksgiving holiday looms.``There should be a small number of people and gatherings should be short in duration,'' she said. ``We are asking people to please follow the public health guidance to provide a safe experience for everyone attending the gathering.'' 1998

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Padres outfielder Tommy Pham has sued a Midway District strip club where he was stabbed last month.Pham, 32, was stabbed around 10:30 p.m. Oct. 11 outside Pacers Showgirls International by an unknown person or persons who took part in a fight that broke out in the club's parking lot.According to the lawsuit filed Tuesday in San Diego Superior Court, the fight outside Pacers left Pham "trapped" inside the club. The suit alleges the club's private security "escalated the risk" to Pham "by participating in the fight and antagonizing" the fight participants. The suit also alleges club employees did not contact law enforcement "or take any reasonable measures to mitigate" the dangers. Due to unspecified "incidents of violence by third parties" that had occurred at the club in the past, the lawsuit alleges Pacers should have been aware of the possibility of a similar incident and taken measures to prevent it.A representative with the club could not immediately reached for comment.Pham later tried to leave the club, and while walking toward the valet stand to get his car, he was attacked by someone who stabbed the major leaguer "without any provocation," the complaint states.RELATED: County demands Midway District strip club stop "live entertainment" over health ordersA statement released by the Padres shortly after the incident described Pham's injury as a non-life-threatening slash wound to his lower back, while the lawsuit alleges he suffered "catastrophic injuries, which have and will continue to cause him significant economic damage, including but not limited to his earning capacity as an elite professional baseball player."Police have not announced any arrests in connection with the stabbing.A hearing in the case is currently slated for June 25, according to court records. 1836

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Humane Society released a series of tips to help keep pets safe this holiday season."With the bustling holiday season upon us, San Diego Humane Society reminds pet owners to consider their pets' safety when decking the halls," an SDHS release said. "Holiday decorations, seasonal plants and festive treats can sometimes be harmful for pets."Some of the tips to keep in mind this Christmas:-- Sharing holiday goodies with animals can be dangerous. Too much fatty or rich food can lead to digestive problems. Some foods, such as onions, grapes/raisins and chocolate can be toxic-- Ask guests not to share food with pets. They may mean well, but it is important to remind them of the potential dangers. Prepare sealed snack bags in advance and let guests use those treats instead of sharing from their plates-- Christmas trees can be hazardous, particularly for climbing cats, so make sure the tree is secure and preferably in a corner-- Dangling tree ornaments can seem like great toys to cats and dogs. Keep dangerous ornaments such as glass and tinsel -- which can be a choking hazard -- on high branches, out of the reach of little paws. Cords from lights should be taped down or otherwise secured to prevent pets from chewing on them-- Keep an eye on items under the tree. Don't let pets drink water from the base of a live tree as it may be stagnant and contain bacteria. Ribbons and bows can be a choking hazard and any packages filled with edible gifts are likely to be discovered-- A number of holiday season plants are toxic or can cause digestive upset to pets if nibbled or eaten, including amaryllis, Christmas cactus, Christmas rose, evergreens, holly, ivy, juniper, lilies, mistletoe and poinsettias. Be sure all plants are kept out of reach of pets-- Burning candles should be placed high, out of any pet's way. A dog's tail wag or a cat's curiosity could be devastating. Homes with fireplaces should use screens to avoid accidental burns-- Pets can get stressed with noise and activity. Give a pet a quiet, secure place with a bed and their favorite toys to escape the commotion. Put food, water and a litter box for cats in that space-- Holiday distractions may make it easier for pets to escape through open doors. Keep pets safely indoors and always make sure they're wearing current ID tags with a phone number and that their microchip information is up to date-- Pets thrive on routine and increased activity during the holiday season can upset that routine. Keep pets on their regular schedule for feeding and exercise and be sure they get plenty of love and attention-- Holiday sweaters may seem irresistible, but if a furry friend does not enjoy dressing up, let them be themselves 2743

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 3,132 new COVID-19 infections -- the 27th consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases. On Sunday, there were no new virus-related deaths reported.Sunday was the 19th day with more than 2,000 new cases.Another 50 people also were hospitalized, according to Sunday's data, and another seven patients were sent to intensive care units. The county's cumulative cases increased to 145,779 and the death toll remained at 1,402.Ten new community outbreaks were confirmed on Saturday. There have been 60 confirmed outbreaks in the last seven days and 250 cases associated with those outbreaks.A community setting outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days.A complete list of county COVID-19 testing sites, how to make appointments and hours can be found at www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/hhsa/programs/phs/community_epidemiology/dc/ 2019-nCoV/testing/testing-schedule.html.Though county officials advised residents to avoid holiday gatherings, anyone who participated in a gathering was urged to get tested, as well as people who recently returned from travel, people with any symptoms and people at higher risk for COVID-19, whether or not they display symptoms. In advising against holiday gatherings, San Diego County Supervisors Nathan Fletcher and Greg Cox pointed to a massive uptick in cases after Thanksgiving -- including the region's highest daily total coming three weeks after the holiday with 3,611 cases reported last Friday."We cannot ignore the reality that we are in a bad place right now," Cox said. "We're making a special plea to avoid large gatherings with those outside your immediate family. This one time, this one year."If people have already traveled, they should be extra cautious about spreading the virus, Cox said.According to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, 44.1% of the county's cumulative cases have been reported after Thanksgiving. San Diego County is on pace to report another 600 deaths due to the virus before the end of January, she said."We don't want to see what happened after Thanksgiving happen again," Wooten said. "We must continue to stay apart to get the spread of the virus under control. If we don't, cases, hospitalizations and deaths will continue to soar."The 11-county Southern California region is still reporting zero available ICU beds. Current stay-at-home orders took effect at 11:59 Dec. 6, and were originally set to end on Monday. 2569
