American Airlines is taking its long-grounded Boeing 737 Max jets out of storage, updating key flight-control software, and flying the planes in preparation for the first flights with paying passengers later this month.The airline invited press reporters and photographers on board one of the planes Wednesday to demonstrate its confidence in the plane’s safety.All Max jets worldwide were grounded in March 2019 after the second of two crashes that together killed 346 people. Their focus is more about the profit and corporate interest than it is about consumer safety.”Some people who lost family members believe that the FAA erred by not accepting all the recommendations made by pilots and aviation professionals during a public comment period on its proposal to let the plane fly again.Scrutiny of the plane has focused on a flight-control system called MCAS, which repeatedly pushed down the nose of the plane before both crashes. Boeing, which describes changes to the plane on its website, and the FAA say the system has been made less powerful and easier for pilots to override.Some of the family members, however, wanted a deeper, nose-to-tail review of the plane. It’s not responsible for them to put you on this flight.”Chicago-based Boeing said Wednesday it has flown more than 1,400 test flights on updated Max planes. The FAA said its people put in 60,000 hours reviewing and testing Boeing’s work.American is likely to be the only U.S. carrier using the Max for several weeks. United Airlines expects to put the plane back in its schedule during the first quarter of next year, with Southwest following in the second quarter. Regulators in Europe and Brazil have cleared a path for their airlines to resume Max flights in a few weeks.It’s unclear whether the flying public will accept the plane or avoid it. Anita Hall, along with the Hollywood Commission, will launch a new anonymous reporting platform next year to hold serial harassers in the movie industry accountable.Hill, who made history in October 1991 when she testified before Congress about the alleged sexual harassment she experienced when she was an aide by then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.Twenty-nine years later, Hill is still finding ways to address the abuse and harassment women still face today.The Hollywood Commission, founded by entertainment lawyer Nina Shaw and Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy and Hill chairs, recently spearheaded a survey that found survivors want to track harassment and abuse in the workplace.According to the survey, 93% of the 9,630 anonymous current and former workers in Hollywood said they wanted "technology for victims to create a time-stamped record" that would track harassment and abuse in the workplace.After its findings, the commission announced in September that by the first quarter of 2021, they would launch a cross-industry anonymous reporting platform that would help identify abusers.The platform would also allow users to ask questions or raise concerns through a two-way anonymous messaging system."For too long in Hollywood, there have been 'open secrets' about the harassment perpetrated on workers by powerful people who are able to successfully evade accountability for their actions," said Hill in the press release. "With this survey, we have identified the most vulnerable workers in Hollywood and the resources and systems that will provide support and a safety net for them. As many feel the trauma inflicted by headlines of racial injustice, COVID-19 continues to hit minorities disproportionally in America. "I think the voices of the young people are being heard and they're speaking out," said Lessie Williams, a community advocate in Portland, Oregon.Williams spent 20 years building up and believing in the young people she serves. Through her church's non-profit organization, Highland Haven, she wanted to bring wrap-around services to families most at risk, expanding mental health services and creating youth violence prevention programs."Building relationships with them, let them know you really care and be your authentic self because kids know," said Williams. For many of those years, she worked alongside Pastor W. G. Hardy, who passed away in 2018.They took part in a national program administered by the CDC aimed at reducing racial and ethnic health disparities."We felt like, focus on health and wellness and try to get rid of some of those disparities in our communities," said Williams.Rather than make the change inside one church, they created a network of churches and community organizations serving African Americans in Multnomah County. Williams worked through this network to increase access to health care, bringing preventive services such as blood pressure screenings to community churches, and increasing access to healthy foods."The biggest thing for me was health. I come from a family of diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and that's not talked about in our community. It's not talked about in our culture," said Teresa Johnson, co-chair for the Highland Haven Health and Wellness Team.They've reached thousands of people through this work, helping community members improve their physical health, manage their mental health, and cope with the traumas of racial injustice."We're going to Zoom and talk about the disparities that are going on in our community, how it is affecting our youth. We've got to wrap around our arms around the youth," explained Johnson. An artificial intelligence tool can help doctors when deciding which COVID-19 patients can be sent home, according to a study that started in May.Researchers at New York University used the AI tool to analyze thousands of COVID-19 cases. The team used data from Asia and Europe to develop the model.It uses lab results, vital signs and oxygen requirements to determine how the patient will do over the next few days.The study has found the AI tool can identify patients that will do well with 90% precision, which could help doctors prioritize care and make discharging plans for others.Doctors always make the final call, but the AI tool can help reaffirm their decisions.“It's augmenting, but it's also teaching a little bit, because you know when the physicians see a patient that looks well, but the models say they may not be well, they can look at the, the features right? The vital signs and labs and other things that are saying that this patient isn't well and then they can start to understand or create a mental model,” said Yin Aphinyanaphongs, Director of Translational Clinical Informatics for DataCore, NYU.The researchers are still running randomized trials for about another two months, looking at the average time patients spend in the hospital.The hope is the AI tool could help reduce the length of stay.“That's extremely compelling because now you don't just show oh I have a model that can predict a favorable outcome, but now you have a model, right, that actually affects the outcome,” said Aphinyanaphongs.Another team at NYU is now conducting a survey among doctors that have used the tool.
