HONG KONG, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong's leading charity donor, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, said Sunday it had donated another 16.3 million HK dollars (2.1 million U.S. dollars) for earthquake-hit area in northwestern China's Qinghai province to help disaster relief work.Together with the emergency donation of 2 million HK dollars made earlier, the Jockey Club contributed over 18.3 million HK dollars to support relief work for victims of the 7.1-magnitude earthquake, which hit the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu in Qinghai on April 14.In a press release, the Jockey club said it achieved a net operating surplus of 15.36 million HK dollars on April 21 at the Happy Valley race meeting. All money had been passed to the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs for earthquake relief work.Chairman of the Jockey club, John C C Chan, said horse racing in Hong Kong not only is a form of entertainment, but is also a charitable undertaking which serves the people of Hong Kong and has a far-reaching significance to the community."We felt that by going ahead with our race meeting on April 21 and donating the net operating surplus to help Qinghai earthquake victims, we would be able to give strong support to the relief efforts at the same time as maintaining a stable contribution to the public purse," he said.In addition, the Jockey Club launched a public fund-raising drive between April 21 and 25. This likewise attracted a huge response, raising a total of 943,284 HK dollars, according to the statement.Chan said he hoped the earthquake victims could overcome their hard times soon and be able to rebuild their homeland with blessings and support from all over the country.Following the Yushu earthquake, the HK Jockey Club made an immediate donation of 2 million HK dollars to support relief work in the stricken area, passing the donation to the Red Cross Society of China via the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong.The Yushu earthquake killed at least 2,200 people and left more than 100,000 homeless.Founded in 1884, the HK Jockey Club has become one of Hong Kong 's best known organizations, providing sporting entertainment as well as being the city's major non-government community benefactor. With good quality, rice produced here has a great market demand. Hui encouraged farmers to plant more rice and expand production capacity.According to the Ministry of Agriculture, northeast China's grain output accounted for about one fifth of the country's total food yield last year.Grain output reached 530.8 million tonnes in 2009, the sixth consecutive year of growth in grain yield.

NARA, Japan, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Former Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan said Monday that China, Japan and South Korea are " mutually complementary in economy and closely linked in trade.""The considerable disparity in their resources, technological levels and labor costs highlights enterprises' comparative advantages and is conducive to transnational investments and trade, " said Zeng in his keynote speech at the fifth session of the Northeast Asia Trilateral Forum."Japan and South Korea are more advanced than China in economic development, and have accumulated much experience in achieving economic transformation, dealing with the relation of development and environment and tackling international trade frictions, from which China could draw lessons and benefit," he said at the one- day forum taking place in the ancient Japanese city of Nara.There thus exists great potential as well as a broad prospect for their future practical cooperation among the three nations, said Zeng.The three need to continuously substantialize the content of their partnership, infuse new elements in their cooperation and improve their communication and coordination from trilateral, regional and global aspect, he said.In his keynote speech, former Japanese Prime Minister Nakasone Yasuhiro said that Japan, China and South Korea should further prompt their cooperation and make their voice more clearly heard on the world stage in a bid to safeguard the stability of Asia as well as that of the world at large.The three need to set as their long-term aim the establishment of a regional cooperative mechanism in areas of East Asia's politics and security, economy and culture, and jointly play a leading role to that end.Former South Korean Prime Minister Lee Hong-koo, for his part, said that faced with problems such as the security and stability of global financial markets, trade liberalization, climate change and the proliferation of nuclear weapons, it draws worldwide attention how the three nations coordinate with each other to adopt a unanimous stance.Zeng arrived here Saturday to attend the fifth session of the Northeast Asia Trilateral Forum that opened earlier Monday.The trilateral gathering drew 29 former high-ranking officials and prominent figures from political, academic and business circles of China, Japan and South Korea.The forum, cosponsored by China's Xinhua News Agency, Japan's Nikkei news group and South Korea's leading daily newspaper JoongAng Ilbo, aims to strengthen non-governmental exchanges among the three nations.The yearly event has been held alternately in the three countries since 2006.
