Thursday marks National Coming Out Day — an LGBTQ holiday that encourages young queer people to be comfortable with their sexuality and live an open lifestyle.2018 marks the 30th anniversary of the first National Coming Out Day, first celebrated in 1988. According to the Human Rights Campaign, the day was started by gay activists Robert Eichberg and Jean O'Leary. Recognized by all 50 states, the day is celebrated each year on the anniversary of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, which took place on Oct. 11, 1987.As a psychologist, Eichberg wrote extensively on the act of "coming out" to friends, family and coworkers. in 1978, he established "The Experience," a community workshop in Los Angeles that encouraged young  LGBTQ people to live an openly gay lifestyle among friends and family.According to Eichberg, when LGBTQ people lived an open lifestyle it made their friends and family more likely to be accepting of queer lifestyles. It also encourages other gay people to live openly and helps develop a support network for those who may be struggling with their sexual identities.The Human Rights Campaign has published a resource guide to coming out, which you can read below. They say music is a universal language, something that can connect us on many different levels. So when it shows up where you least expect it, that makes it even more special.One woman's dream is translating across an entire community in more ways than she could have imagined.Listen closely and you can hear the sweet sound of jazz in one park. There's no band, and you can't see any speakers. But if you happen to stumble upon a small door tucked inside a tree trunk, you'll stumble upon your own personal performance."I was in awe to actually hear music coming out of a tree," says Bruce Bo-Wdry who lives near the park.He still remembers the moment he first heard music flowing from this sound totem, and seeing neighborhood kids share his excitement."They were all over it," Bo-Wdry recalls. "And then they go to the box and then they open up the door, and you can see the gleam on their little faces like awh you know!" Artist Nikki Pike came up with the idea. "I had a dream where there was a miniature opera singer singing in the hollow of the tree," Pike says. "And then I realized that maybe there was an opportunity." A sound totem in Denver, Colorado, was the first realization of that dream. From there she built more, putting the solar and battery powered music boxes in trees across her city, and filling them with music performed by people who live in those neighborhoods. "I sort of built the stage and they are the performers," Pike says. "So it's a real community effort." She doesn't share exactly where the totems are, instead she allows people's curiosity lead them to discovering music, art and community. An idea she believes can spread across the country."The leap in peoples mind to imagine them in their own community is easy," Pike says. "Whereas before when it was an idea and a drawing it was harder to imagine."While the totems add a special spark to the trees and communities they call home, Pike said these small spaces do so much more."I do think this is how you change the world," Pike says. TOKYO — Shinzo Abe, Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, says he will resign because a chronic illness has resurfaced. Concerns about Abe’s health began this summer and grew this month when he visited a Tokyo hospital two weeks in a row for unspecified health checkups. Abe has acknowledged having ulcerative colitis since he was a teenager and has said the condition was controlled with treatment. Abe, whose term ends in September 2021, is expected to stay on until a new party leader is elected and formally approved by the parliament.Abe's resignation will mark the end of his second term. He served as prime minister from September 2006 to September 2007 before resigning due to health problems. He assumed office for his second term in December 2012. 767

There are new concerns about people's ability to understand information regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.Dartmouth College researchers found many health agencies are publishing coronavirus information at a 10th grade reading level.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the American Medical Association and National Institutes of Health say information should not be published at more than an 8th grade reading level.Researchers say it could lead to more people missing information.“If high quality information, in terms of content, like with the CDC, WHO and other official organizations put out, if that is difficult to access, difficult to understand, then that does create a potential or an incentive for looking at less trustworthy sources,” said Joseph Dexter, Neukom Fellow at Dartmouth College.Researchers say health agencies need to use short and direct sentences when writing health information. They should also use short paragraphs, avoiding jargon and technical terms.It's also important to think about how information can be presented visually on a screen.Right now, it's not required that states follow these guidelines, but it is highly recommended. 1192

TIMES SQUARE — Good riddance, 2020.The celebrations to ring in the new year will be much smaller than usual because of the ongoing pandemic, but many around the world are excited for 2021. One of the world's biggest celebrations will see its own changes. Instead of the usual crowd in Times Square for the ball drop, there will be fewer than 100 people at the Crossroads of the World to ring in 2021. Doctors, nurses, teachers, grocery store employees and transit workers will be invited to enjoy the celebration in socially distances pens while everyone else watches from home.There will be a live broadcast, but just a small in-person audience, Tim Tompkins with the Times Square Alliance said. "To make up the experience we have a new way to watch," he said. "Besides broadcast TV, there is a New Year’s Eve app ,which is interactive. You can even choose the camera angles.”The event will be headlined by Gloria Gaynor, Jennifer Lopez, Billy Porter and Jimmy Allen. So far, the biggest star for visitors is a large, illuminated 2021 display. It was driven more than 5,000 miles through 15 states to get to Times Square, according to Times Square producer Jeff Strauss. "As these numerals were being driven across the country by Kia drivers, people along the way at every stop were cheering," Strauss said.
