Things are sizzling in the back of this food truck as burgers are served with a side of bravado.Mike Schuster and Dominic Maldonado have been in the food truck game for almost seven years, and in that time the industry has boomed.“When we first hit the road, I think there were maybe 230 licensed food trucks in all of Denver. I think now it’s over 500,” said Schuster.Doubled in Denver and nearly doubled across the US.According to the US Census, in 2013 there were almost 3,300 food trucks in the US. That number grew to just under 6,000 in 2018. Sales have risen from 0 million in 2012 to .2 billion in 2017.“We’ve seen it, we’ve seen it in front of office buildings, we see it in the downtown core. And I’m not just talking because of COVID, I’m talking a natural business marker, alive and well within the hospitality and restaurant industry,” said Steve Chucri, the president of the Arizona Restaurant Association He says food trucks are here to stay in his state as well.“I think they’ll always have their place and their spot in the industry," Chucri said.A unique opportunity that food trucks have, they are a to-go business and most social distance guidelines during the pandemic don’t hold them back in the same way they do sit down restaurants.But that doesn’t mean the industry is not facing its own challenges.“Back when April hit and everything shut down, it was about a month and a half straight for us of just wedding cancelations, graduation party cancelations, party after party everyday,” Schuster said.“Food trucks depending on those office buildings to have people pouring out at 12 noon everyday and going to a food truck and buying. So, they’ve got to be hurting just like all of us are,” said Chucri.But with challenges come opportunity so Maldonado and Schuster got to work and got creative.“We started going after some of the business to serve some of the front line workers during the pandemic so we started serving some of the workers at King Soopers who were working their butts off through the whole thing. We fed some the Aurora 911 services, the ambulance services because they were working their butts off. We started doing hospital servings. We found a way to find where people were hungry, working still, needed to eat, and just didn’t have a lot of viable options,” said Schuster.Getting creative to get by. Just like a lot of us over the last several months.One thing that doesn’t change, wherever Maldonado and Schuster serve food, they serve it with heart.“When people come back to the truck for seconds and thirds, because they just want to try every flavor of slider we have, even when they’re stuffed. Even just that, even when they don’t even say anything, you know that they love it and they see the smile on their face and it’s great,” said Schuster. 2809

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — A federal grand jury has indicted six men on charges of conspiring to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.In October, the men were arrested in what authorities describe as a plot by anti-government extremists angry over the Democratic governor's policies to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.U.S. Attorney Andrew Birge announced in a statement that the indictment was handed down Wednesday.According to an indictment released Thursday, Adam Fox, Brandon Caserta, Ty Garbin, Kaleb Franks, and Daniel Harris, all of Michigan, and Barry Croft of Delaware, allegedly began to plan the kidnapping last summer.According to the indictment, they allegedly conducted surveillance of Whitmer's rural vacation home and practicing the use of firearms and explosives.On August 23, Garbin, Franks, and Caserta met up with Harris near his residence in Lake Orion, Michigan, to examine each other’s identification documents to make sure they weren't undercover law enforcement agents or informants, according to the affidavit.WXYZ reports that federal agents were infiltrated among the group as either confidential informants and undercover FBI agents.According to the indictment, Fox ordered ,000 worth of explosives from an undercover agent in September.Fox also ordered a taser in October, WXYZ reported. Fox was also photographed at the governor's summer home drawing a map of the property.According to WXYZ, Fox, Garbin, Franks, and Harris were arrested after showing up in Ypsilanti, Michigan, to pay the undercover FBI agent posing as a co-conspirator for the explosives. There are still roughly 700 children who were separated from their parents at the border and have not been reunified with those parents by the Trump administration, as new court filings reveal the slow pace of reuniting the trickiest family separation cases.That figure includes more than 40 children who are 4 years old and younger.While the administration maintains there is a suitable explanation for each of those cases, the filing makes clear that a large share of those children remain separated because their parents were deported without them.To date, 1,923 out of 2,654 children identified as separated from their parents have been reunified, the administration says.The number was revealed in a weekly status report on Thursday that the government is required to file as part of an ongoing lawsuit over the administration's separation of immigrant families at the border. A federal judge has ordered the administration to reunite all the families, as long as they are not ineligible due to safety concerns or other excluding factors.In a Friday court hearing, San Diego-based District Judge Dana Sabraw said the filing was nonetheless "very encouraging.""There's real progress being made and real effort being made in some of these home countries, Guatemala and Honduras," Sabraw said. "(It) looks or is very encouraging, at least, that everything is being done to locate as many of these parents as can be. So the report would indicate to the court that the efforts on the ground are productive and certainly heading in the right direction."There are 528 children in government custody who have not been reunited with a parent, including 23 who are under the age of 5, the filing said. For the first time, the administration also made clear how many children were not reunited with their parent but were otherwise released from detention: an additional 203, including 19 under the age of 5.Those children may have been released to a relative or family friend or may have turned 18 while in custody. It is possible some have since reunited with a parent outside of government custody, but it's not known how many have been able to do so.In the joint court filing with the American Civil Liberties Union, which filed the original lawsuit on behalf of separated parents, it is apparent that the two sides still disagree over how the efforts to reunify are going. While the numbers have improved slightly since last week's update, the going remains slow.Still, ACLU attorney Lee Gelernt said in court Friday that he expects the pace to "accelerate" soon.The filing also makes clear that the administration's accounting methods are painting a rosier picture of the pace of reunification than the ACLU's.According to the list given to the ACLU by the government, 412 parents were deported without their children -- a group that has remained the most difficult problem in the reunification process. That tabulation makes the number seem smaller by only counting the children still in custody with deported parents, rather than the total number of parents who were deported.There is also a dispute about how many parents have been actually found.The administration said only four of its total have not been "contacted" -- but the ACLU says only 231 parents were "reached," either by phone or in person. Of those, 183 have indicated what they want to do going forward, either reuniting with their child or allowing them to continue to seek the ability to stay in the US, and 10 have been reunited with their parents in their home country.In court, Justice Department attorneys attributed the discrepancies to out-of-date information or children being released from government custody. Administration attorney Scott Stewart said roughly two dozen children had been sent back to their home countries to be with their parents.The process is complicated on a number of levels. The information for tracking down parents and children is still raw and not always reliable, the ACLU says. Also because of two separate lawsuits, the attorneys must make sure the parents' wishes and the children's wishes about their future are aligned.
